models and validation problem
In my model, I am attempting to correct some bad data rather than just
pass an error message back to the user. The problem is that my fix
seems to get the data past validation but it then puts the bad data into
the database rather than the new(and improved) data. If I pass in
web_site with the value of ''www.test.com'', it will pass validation but
it won''t add

dispatch.cgi Problem
Hey all,
I''ve been battling with ruby configurations for days now...trying to get
either SCGI or FCGI to work on my Apache 1.3/Linux Red Hat 3 server.
I''ve pretty much gave up that battle since either of them will work with
me after trying dozens of configurations, but now even when I try to run
apps with dispatch.cgi I get this error in my log: "Premature end of

form_remote_tag breaks inside table
i guess its better form to keep form tags outside of table tags anyways,
but it took a lot of trial and error to figure out thats why @params
were no longer showing up after switching form_tag to form_remote_tag.
not sure if this is a prototype ''bug'' or ''feature'' or what. but my next
step was to switch to a seperate form tag for each row to reduce
needless

Populating text_tag with serialized data
I am using a serialized attribute in one of my models The serialized data is
in the form of an array. I want to have a text_tag for each element
contained in my serialized attribute. How would I construct the text_tag?
My model name is ''questions''. The serialized attribute is "answers"
So I might have:
<% form tag %>
<% text_tag ''question'',

[AR] #{id} namespace visibility used in finder_sql
Dears,
[Rails 1.0.0]
I''m working with a legacy schema, and around my 20+ models i''ve used
some AR constructs.
They are based on a finder_sql doing some dirty sql and using #{id}
from the ''pivot'' model for extracting data in other tables.
like :
class Division < ActiveRecord::Base
set_table_name "legacy_division"
set_primary_key

Text field not being submitted via form_remote_tag; works via form_tag
Hi everyone,
Newbie here. I''m trying to get a textual form element to submit in
the context of a form_remote_tag block and having little success.
Oddly (or perhaps not), using regular old form_tag in its place does
cause the elements to be submitted. Here''s the relevant partial ERb
code:
<%= form_remote_tag( { :url => { :action => :out, :id => pending_task } } )

Here''s my observe_field code inside the partial:
<h1><label for="searchtext">Live Search:</label></h1>

of the Web2.0 chapter of the Agile book.
I implemented my version, and nothing is happening. No javascript errors,
my logs look fine, page is rendered fine... just no Effect.Highlight. Here
is the code:

Validating that a foreign key is present and ok
How do I validate that a model object''s attribute is a valid foreign
key? The problem is, I can''t check if the attribute is a valid foreign
key if the attribute doesn''t even exist.
For example, every employee must be in a department. In the following
code, if an employee''s department_id is not present then
Department.find_by_id(department_id) might cause

help me understand association attributes
I have a model with a belongs_to association. The first model is called
Thing and the associated model is User. I''m attempting to assign the user to
the thing.
To accomplish this I used a before_save method, like this:

Updating Attributes in a HABTM Join Table
Is there a way to update attributes in a HABTM join table? Right now
I am deleting the join and then recreating it with new attributes.
I have a table "categories" and another table "items". They are both
HABTM with the join table "categories_items" between them. If an item
is joined to a category once, no problem, we create the join. But if
an item is

that all map to the same table. The only difference between this AR classes
