A Memoir on FastCGI and Apache
With the release of our filmfury.com project, I''ve been trying to rise to the stature of a true system administrator in the last couple of days (haha). I''m trying to understand how all of the pieces to this apache/fastcgi deployment fit together. Here''s what I''ve learned so far: * You need a separate FastCGI server for each Rails application on your

How do I get fastcgi stuff to work on apache... I have this setup for my tutorial environment in httpd.conf <VirtualHost *> DocumentRoot /home/craig/cookbook/public ServerName cookbook <Directory

Error in dispatch.fcgi...
Yesterday, our of nothing my server went down... Rails application failed to start properly Imediately i started checking my logs and found quickly that something was wrong with the dispatch.fcgi or its function. I use FCGI, and it had been working perfectly with Apache 2.0.55, MySQL 5.0, Ruby 1.8.2 and Rails 1.1.2. What really got me wondering was that I did nothing. One day it worked

managing number of dispatch.fcgi processes ?
I have a problem where when I try and access my site a dispatch.fcgi process is started but then exits right after the page has loaded. Requireing it to start all over agin the next time a request is made. I''ve read about people using two or more FCGI processes to help with the request load but how do people do this? Firstly, how do you make a FCGI process persistant? I''m

Idle Apache+FastCGI sleeping?
Wondering: Does Apache shut down inactive FastCGI processes if it doesn''t get any requests for a while? My app works fine if it''s being used regularly, but it will respond very slowly to the first request after an hour of zero traffic. Is there a way to keep FastCGI ready all the time, even when there haven''t been any requests for a while? We''re deploying

trouble with fastcgi and "undefined method `is_cgi?''"
I''m trying to get started with fastcgi on apache 2.0.54 on Fedora Core 4. I''ve created a really simple Rails app that doesn''t do any database actions. It works fine when I call it as CGI, but when I try to switch to fastCGI, I have problems. I get the following error in log/fastcgi.crash.log: [20/Dec/2005:10:16:53 :: 26912] Dispatcher failed to catch: undefined

Rewrite problem?
I''m not able to access anything in public, everything seems to be going through the rails router. As a result, I can''t get to stylesheets or javascript. I''m not quite clear if this is a .htaccess problem, or a router problem. I eliminated the "catchall" route, so the last route is map.connect '':controller/:action/:id'' My .htaccess file
