Xen performance and Dbench
I saw the presentation "Virtualization of Linux Servers" at OLS last month and it had some nice comparisons of Xen performance vs a lot of other virtualization/container technologies: http://ols.fedoraproject.org/OLS/Reprints-2008/camargos-reprint.pdf As always with benchmarks, there are questions to ask and points to quibble, but overall Xen looks quite good... except on Dbench. [RFC] Enable _OSI(Linux) for Xen HVM domains
I''d like to send this patch to upstream lkml/linux-acpi, but I want to make sure that the x86 side wants this too. The _OSI method is a way for platform ACPI firmware to determine the features and capabilities of the OS running on the system. This is usually done by calling the _OSI method with various strings in the _INI method of an ACPI device. The strings are things like

[Xen-ia64-devel] [PATCH] Add guest_os_type domain config option
On ia64 we have a desire to know the guest OS the user plans to run in an HVM domain. With this information we can make certain optimizations, for instance knowing if a guest identity maps a memory region can change how we handle page faults. In the past we''ve tried to do this via the guest firmware detecting the guest type, but this is error prone and doesn''t allow the user to

dbench strange results
Hi I'm building new samba server (on Debian 6.0, software RAID10 2TB, Xeon CPU). Generally everything is working fine, so I have decided to run some stress tests. My choice was dbench. Old server is Debian 4.0 (samba 3.0.24, Athlon 3000+, one ATA 160GB disk). So run dbench 16 on both old and new server The results are strange old serwer: about 300MB/sek (dbench 3.0) and below are first

[PATCH 0/6] add NUMA support to Xen
The following patchset adds NUMA support to the hypervisor. This includes: - A full SRAT table parser for 32-bit and 64-bit, based on the ACPI NUMA parser from linux 2.6.16.29 with data structures to represent NUMA cpu and memory topology, and NUMA emulation (fake=). - Changes to the Xen page allocator adding a per-node bucket for each zone. Scaling Memory at WIndows
Hello. I am using XEN 3.4.2 and 4.0.1 with dom0 based on Centos 5.x and Debian 6.0. I can scale RAM with paravirt domU''s by using xm mem-max and xm mem-set But, I see this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg487553 . Is it possible to change memory at Window HVM domU''s without reboot? Thans a lot! -- Best Regards, alex.faq8@gmail.com

HVM ignoring vcpus parameter
Hi, I am using Xen 4 under Debian Squeeze. I want to use Windows 2008 x86 with HVM, but only one vcpu allocated when vm started. After increasing vcpus number (vcpus = ''4'') in cfg, at start ignored that parameter, xm list VCPUs show only 1. Why does not able to increase the vcpus? Any idea?:) p.s: if using pvm linux, then the vcpus parameter is ok, increased successfully when I

Mapping pci resources for graphics passthrough
Hi all, I''ve been trying to understand the pci_setup function in hvmloader.c in Xen unstable. I''m kinda lost at Line 328. base = (resource->base + bar_sz - 1) & ~(bar_sz - 1) I''d appreciate if someone could explain to me why base is calculated this way. Specifically, I don''t understand the bitwise AND with the one''s complements of

[Xen-ia64-devel] [PATCH 0/3][IA64] Accelerate IDE PIO on HVM/IA64
Hi, This set of patches remarkably accelerates IDE PIO on HVM/IA64. I got a throughput of 2.11MB/sec in disk read performance. Without it, it was only 64kB/sec. I posted the prototype once. http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2006-12/msg00077.html The basic idea is to add a buffering mechanism in a hypervisor. I know this approach is not sophisticated. But there is no other good

dbench
trying to check gluster performance with dbench I'm using a replica 3 with a bonded dual gigabit (balance-alb) on all servers and shard (64M) enabled. I'm unable to over 3MB (three) MB/s from *inside* VM, thus I think there isn't any small file issue, as from inside VM there isn't any metadata operation for gluster. Any advice ?
