Production mode bug with ruby/amazon
Hi all,
I''ve got an issue that only ever appears in production mode. I''ve got
my app hooked up to amazon''s web service (ECS, using ruby/amazon from
http://www.caliban.org/ruby/ruby-amazon.shtml).
In the dev environment, everything''s peachy. But in production mode,
after I''ve left the app up for a couple of hours (sometimes, minutes),
I get an

Newbie: Getting Book Data from Amazon
As part of my inaugural Ruby project, I''ve been trying to get data
for books from Amazon''s web services. The first thing I tried was
Ruby/Amazon <http://www.caliban.org/ruby/ruby-amazon.shtml>. It works
great, but is based on an earlier version of Amazon''s Web Services,
which apparently doesn''t return a complete set of data for the items

Amazon EC2 SIP floods - you can help
Hi,
We all know most people are reporting that Amazon hasn't been helpful
at all. A few people say they've received answers, but most are
getting smoke screen PR BS.
You can vote this up on Slashdot, send the message: SIP Attacks From
Amazon EC2 Going Unaddressed: http://bit.ly/bOkNNx
Send this message out to Amazon, I am positive that once it reaches
the right person, they will do the

nuby: do models have to inherit directly from ActiveRecord?
Hello,
I have a few models -- book, cd, dvd -- for which I''d like to have an
abstract base superclass to hold some common stuff. That abstract class, I
was thinking, would inherit from ActiveRecord.
Didn''t work, though, and looking around, I found this:

create an object from a string?
I''m trying to dynamically create an instance of an object at runtime, from a
String. I have a method that returns one of a number of Strings ("Car",
"Motorcycle", "Bicycle"), and when I receive the String, I then want to
instantiate one of those objects.
Seems like there should be a way to do it in Ruby, but maybe I''ve been up
too long --

Amazon, Asterisk and reliability beyond a hobby system?
Took me a while but I have finally embraced cloud computing and all the benefits.
The only thing I have yet to feel comfortable about putting in the cloud is real live Asterisk boxes to be used in production. I know it's being done because as far as I know Twilio is using Amazon for their Asterisk boxes.
I have read all the fun articles on building hobby type systems and that's all great.

Amazon have just announced they are finally opening up their API's to
their credit card processing platform

So does this mean that micropayments have finally been cracked?
It certainly helps out users because you can

Looking for an image (R 64-bit on Linux 64-bit) on Amazon EC2
I have found an existing image on Amazon EC2 including R. But unfortunately,
it is 32-bit
R on 32-bit Linux.
Does anybody know if there exists an mage (R 64-bit on Linux 64-bit) on
Amazon EC2?
Or how can I install 64-bit R on my own Linux instance there?
Thanks.

Adding an 'official' CentOS image to the Amazon EC2 (Electronic Compute Cloud)
I'm starting to use the EC2 cloud (as are others) and noticed that all
the available CentOS images seem to be of dubious origin.
I think it would further the reputation and popularity of CentOS if it
were represented in an official way.
In case people aren't aware, when you create an AWS (Amazon Web
Services) account there's a management console that shows a list of
available images.

Does Amazon.com block scraping?
Hi there
Does anyone know if Amazon.com has any sort of server side script that tries
to block scraping activities? I first noticed that if I didn?t change the
agent alias, it would fetch a page exactly like the normal one, but without
the intial search field(maybe a silly way to prevent scraping). Then after
it, I changed to some other alias, and submit a search. I got the result
page as

[PLEASE HELP] Trying to install wine in Amazon AWS EC2
I looked everywhere for information on how to install wine in the Amazon AWS cloud.
Can somebody please point me to some working binaries and which AMI to use? And possibly some installation instructions?
I'm just trying to run some simple Windows console applications (from MS-DOS)... nothing fancy. But wine just doesn't want to install or run in AWS. Surely many people have

amazon ec2 and centos?
Searching through the archives, it seems this topic has come up
several times in the past 2.5 years. Did anyone ever take on the
tasks of creating an official CentOS AMI?
We're currently using the RightScale ones, but I think it'd be ideal
to have a clean CentOS AMI with the current kernels.
Karanbir, you seem to have been the one on CentOS side who has had

S Programming Book at Amazon.com
As of a moment ago (9 a.m., Monday, Jan. 8, 2001), the S Programming book by
Venables and Ripley was once again selling for 17.98 American dollars at
Amazon.com. Alas, I notice that "Mixed Effects Models in S and S-Plus" by
Pinheiro and Bates now lists at Amazon for 97.25 American dollars, as
opposed to about $70 a little while ago.

Probando R en el EC2 de Amazon (ligeramente OT)
Hola, ¿qué tal?
He aprovechado este puente para probar R sobre el EC2 de Amazon. He
escrito mis experiencias en

En el EC2 de Amazon uno puede alquilar un servidor con una determinada
configuración por horas. La configuración es, esencialmente, de hardware

rails3 - example of Amazon S3 on rails
Hi
I''ve done a small rails application for file management on Amazon''s new
service, the storage webservice ''Amazon S3'' (at this time just upload, list
and delete methods are implemented). Maybe someone find it useful as
example.
The source code and a little more information can be found here:
