Sorting/Ordering Search Results
Hello All,
I am having an issue with AAF and sorting results of a search. Right
now, I have results being split onto pages of 10. The results are being
sorted alphabetically, but not across multiple pages - it''s just sorting
the 10 it pulls down on each page. I noticed another post from April
regarding this same issue (http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/62993#66934)

AAF Sorting by date - what am I doing wrong?
I''m trying to sort my search results by Date, in descending order. I''ve
done quite a bit of reading through the forums here, and I''ve tried two
different suggestions.
This just returns results in the same order as a search without a sort:
sort_fields = []
sort_fields <<
Ferret::Search::SortField.new("ferret_created_at",:reverse => :true)

Ferret 0.10 and Fields
Hey ...
I just tried to convert my code to 0.10 .. But i''m currently not sure
how to use fields..
i really like some of the new api.. its leaner and i like the fact that
these strange consts are gone (like
Ferret::Search::BooleanClause::Occur::MUST) ..
I see that you''re now having Ferret::Index::FieldInfo to describe the
fields of the index.. thats good.. and i now see that

Searching untokenized fields
Hi ..
I tried to exclude certain objects from my search, by adding appropriate
term queries ..
i = Ferret::Index::Index.new
i.field_infos.add_field(:type, :index => :untokenized, :term_vector => :no)
i << {:type => "Movie", :name => "Indiana" }
i << {:type => "Movie", :name => "Forrest" }
i << {:type =>

Dynamic fields and AAF
Hi,
I have a model which has properties, these are your standard name/value
pairs, but also have attributes that affect how I want to store them in
ferret. I was using 0.9.5 with 0.2 of aaf, which seemed fine, I just
copied and pasted (yes, I know, ick) the to_doc method and added code to
iterate though the properties that that model had, and add relavent
fields to the document.
It seems

Sorting by score
Hi I think this is a very easy question but here goes:
I want to sort my results by a boolean field and then by score, I
thought this would be a default configuration but apparently not.
sort_fields = []
sort_fields << Ferret::Search::SortField.new(:sponsored, :reverse =>
:true)
that is my current code, how do iu alter it so that the results are then
sorted by highest score first?

More sorting problems with untokenized index
I''m having problems sorting on untokenized fields. I have one field that
sorts fine, but there are others that seem to sort on a different field.
Here''s the index description:
acts_as_ferret
:remote=>true,:fields=>{:name=>{:boost=>2},:name_for_sort=>{:index =>
:untokenized},
:city=>{:boost=>2}, :city_for_sort=>{:index=>:untokenized},

Possible Bug when Creating Indexes
I''m running:
ferret (0.10.9)
ruby 1.8.5 (2006-08-25) [i386-mswin32]
on Windows XP(SP2)
When I create an index as follows:
field_infos = FieldInfos.new(:store => :yes, :term_vector => :no, :index
=> :yes)
field_infos.add_field(:id, :index => :untokenized)
field_infos.add_field(:subject)
field_infos.add_field(:author)
field_infos.add_field(:tags, :store => :no)

missing terms in index causing search errors
I am unable to find results for models when one or more of the terms are
not being indexed.
Lets suppose I index a User on the phrase "Ruby on Rails." If I then
search using User.find_by_contents("Ruby on Rails") I get no results,
since "or" is a common term and does not get indexed. Of course,
User.find_by_contents("Ruby Rails") works just fine.

Another web app using Ferret
I am apart of a team that runs a student site called Studicious
(http://stu.dicio.us). We have been using Ferret from the beginning, and
recently added acts_as_ferret and sorting to the system.
As you can see if you try the search, sorting is not working as
expected. I am using this code (w/ find_by_content):
:sort => Ferret::Search::SortField.new(:school_sort, :reverse => false)

uninitialized constant UNTOKENIZED
I''m getting "uninitialized constant UNTOKENIZED" when I try to do
something like the following:
class Url < ActiveRecord::Base

''description'' => {},
''url'' => {:index =>

Possible bug when creating a Ferret::Search::Sort object?
I may have run across a bug in Ferret: if throws a segmentation fault
when I try to create a Sort object using the default fields (SCORE and
DOC_ID), but setting reverse to true.
Here''s the minimal example:
#!/usr/bin/env ruby
require ''rubygems''
require ''ferret''
Ferret::Search::Sort.new

I use Ferret 0.11.4 and the latest stabel version of the acts_as_ferret
plugin.
To the issue. if I do Model.rebuild_index and after that try to update
one of my objects of that Model I get:

Reverse Sorting with array
I run several websites that receive a lot of concurrent access and use
the ferret DRB server. I am adding sort functionality to my search pages
and have run into problems with the marshalling of Sort and SortField
objects. Using the :sort=>"name" style works, but I can''t figure out how
to reverse the sort. Is it possible to reverse the sort by passing a
string?
Thanks,

multiple-index searching with merged results
Hey..
i am just browsing through the lucene features and i''m wondering if this
feature is available in ferret as well ..
# multiple-index searching with merged results
this would be nice, as i''m thinking about several indexes, as i am using a
lot of wildcard queries for livesearches like google suggest. i think the
performance would increase, if i split my rather big index in

can''t search for OR (as in the state)
I''m trying to search a Model by the state field using Acts As Ferret.
The query for this is ''+state:NY'' (substitute state abbreviation for
NY). This works find however ''+state:OR'' returns nothing, though just
''portland'' will pull up matches within that state.
I''m pretty sure it''s reading OR as an or conditional

Reverse sorting
I am getting strange results when I reverse sort a query. I am sorting
by date, but it doesn''t seem to be related to dates (I have tried just
integers). I also paginate the results. Items in the result set are
sometimes duplicated and the not ordered at all. When I try a
non-reverse sort I don''t see duplicates and the ordering is correct. Any
ideas what is going on? Thanks

Hyphens
Hi there,
I''m working with some legacy data where customer phone numbers are
stored with hyphens between the area code, exchange, and number (e.g.
555-555-5555). Is this the best way to store a phone number? Perhaps
not, but it''s the way they were being stored, so I have to work with
this format.
Right, so when I save a record the log tells me acts_as_ferret indexed
