The ferret logs
Hi.
We''ve had some problems with ferret not being able to load our classes
(stack trace below for the curious).
I nailed it down to a deployment issue, where an old instance of ferret
drb was running. I don''t understand the details quite yet, but the
result was the the old ferret was never shutdown during redeployment,
and attempts were made to start up a new one.
Anywho,

Ferret DRB - can add/edit index, but can''t search
I''m trying to use the Ferret DRB server to avoid concurrency issues when
using multiple mongrels. I can successfully add and edit data on my
index via the DRB server, however, when I search the index, I get the
following error:

Inifinite loop problem with DRb server
Hi all,
We''re attempting to use Ferret with the DRb server at the moment, and
it doesn''t work, at all...
= Executive Summary
The DRb server process keeps on calling the remote index to the DRb
server process... Which means DRb is calling itself, and itself, and
itself, until Ruby kills the Thread with a SystemStackLevel error.

Method missing error after switching to DRB
I am getting these errors after switchign to dRb:
It is trying to call ''add'' on MY SourceListing class, not extended with the
ferret indexing methods.
Any ideas on where to fix this? I''m combing through the code now.
no luck, trying to call class method instead

I set up ferret and it''s running fine normally. Now I want to hook up
the backgroundrb server. However whenever I try to do a search, I get

strange behavior after switching to DRb server
After switching to the DRb server, I am experiencing strange behavior
when sorting on score. My app was working as expected before the switch.
Both before and after the switch, my app sorts properly on other
fields, such as date.
For sorting on score, I am using the following option
find_by_contents option:
:sort => Ferret::Search::SortField::SCORE
Before switching to DRb, this worked

Launching DRb server on reboot: solved
The problem with getting DRb to luanch on reboot is the same problem
causing some people to ahve trouble getting mongrel clustersw to come
back up on reboot. The problem is the PATH. ON many new RH
distributions running SELinux, /usr/local/bin is not added to the PATH
until reboot is complete. Therefore, those of having installed ruby
in /usr/local/bin run in to issues. SO, hoping to save

DRb server crashing
I''m having a problem where the DRb server seems to be disappearing
(crashing?) and I don''t know how to track down the cause or work around
the problem.
Unfortunately I haven''t found a way to reproduce the problem, but it
seems to happen fairly often (maybe once a day). Other then that ferret
seems to be working well.
I can''t seem to find any trace of the

Ferret DRB, UTF-8, Mongrel
I have spent days trying to figure out how to get UTF-8 working with my

Problem with acts_as_ferret demo
Hi Jens,
I copied the demo folder into my rails apps and also created the
ferret_production and ferret_test databases.
when I start the server and type this in the browser:
localhost:3000/content
I get the following error:

NameError uninitialized constant Ferret::Index::FieldInfos
Hi Everyone,
I''ve a RoR application. I am trying to build full text search capability
into it. I installed Ferret. After that I installed the act_as_ferret
plugin. I''ve also put the acts_as_ferret inside the <model>.rb file .
I''m using the find_by_contents to get the search results.
I''m getting the following error. I''ve no clue and I

Hmm, I think I''ve hit a similar problem. I''ve just upgraded to the
latest ferret trunk from an old aaf stable where the script/ferret_start
and script/ferret_stop scripts were still in use.
now if I call the old script...

Launching DRb server on reboot
I''m hoping for a little insight. We''re using ferret with DRb server
and having a hard time getting it to come back up on reboot of the
machine.
In our RAILS_ROOT directory, we''ve got a script named start_ferret.
Here''s the content:
#!/bin/bash
FERRET_USE_LOCAL_INDEX=1 script/runner -e production

Neophyte needs help!
Hi All,
Real neophyte here, to both backgroundrb and ruby/rails in general.
(Hey, we''ve all got to start somewhere, right!) :)
I''ve just been playing around with the example code at
http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org/ , and trying to get all
the pieces to work (btw, I''m using version 0.2.1).
I did a ''generate worker example'', which created an

Acts_as_ferret, DRb, 4 monrels and complete site lockups
Hi,
I am having some serious problems with site that''s already live. It is
using RoR 1.2, ferret 0.11.6 and most recent acts_as_ferret plugin.
Most of the day, site is doing pretty well, is quick and search is
reliable. But, at some point, it just "locks" and stops responding,
one instance of mongrel after another.
At the same time ferret DRb server starts eating lots of CPU.

DRb server & aaf gem
I''m having problems getting the DRb server running with the aaf gem.
I tried it with the plugin installed in my application, and it
worked. I suspect the problem has something to do with the startup
scripts expecting certain files to be in certain relative file paths.
Any insights are appreciated, and maybe if you have time you can
update the wiki document :)
Thanks for a great

AAF and DRb server
I''ve installed the ferret gem. I installed AAF as a plugin into my
vendor/plugins directory of my project. In development environment my
searches work just fine, without any problems.
For production I configured the ferret_server.yml file with correct
information about the machine my DRb server is running on. I start the
ferret server with the following command:

AAF and DRb with highlighting
How would I change this method in order to get highlighting working with
DRb? I''ve given up on searching on Google, I''m getting no results that
are actually helpful.
def self.find_storage_by_contents(query, options = {})

index = self.aaf_index.ferret_index

Do I need to use a DRB server?
I''m finishing up a rails app that uses Ferret / AAF. I''m using shared
hosting provided by railsplayground.com. My app is pretty small and is
never going to get much traffic, so I''m going with the cheapest plan.
Unfortunately, the cheapest plan doesn''t allow any static processes.
I''ve read multiple recommendations to use a DRB server when using ferret
