Data source for American college football rankings?
An interesting, and topical, example of multivariate data for
classroom illustrations are the American college football rankings.
Starting at the end of October (or "week 8", the 8th week of the
football season) a set of rankings called the BCS (Bowl Championship
Series) will be published. This is a composite ranking based on two
subjective polls, the Harris and USA Today polls, and a

Images and Alt Tags Acheiving Better Search Engine Ranking
Many years ago, my sister asked me to look at the Google <a
href="http://images.google.com/">Images search</a>
. When I first saw the page, I thought Google was offering a place for
freebie photos before I realized that it was probably searching for and
finding the "alt tag" text written in the HTML for website images. "Alt

Spider diagrams
Hi, I am trying to create what are called "spider diagrams" in the geochemical
literature using R. A spider diagram is basically a plot of the atomic number
versus the concentration on a log scale. Lines are drawn from each atomic
number for each sample.
Right now, my data frame looks like:
SAMPLE SITE V3 LA.NASC LAATNUM CE.NASC CEATMNUM

Independent Variable Rankings with MARS
Hi,
I am trying to extract MARS' component analysis from the model.
Essentially, for an input matrix where each row is a different device, and
each column is a different measurement, I'd like to know which columns were
selected as most important for making the model.
I saw the all.terms and selected.terms parameters in the model output and
documentation, but could not figure out how

Can the WINE window be larger on high resolution settings?
I was reading this post http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?p=45535&sid=6957add8af3402a8afa68d8527121e2d
and others like it looking for a way to make the content in the WINE window look larger.
I mean to look like 800x600 resolution when the monitor settings is at 1024x768.
So, I have typed this on the command line:
Code:
wine explorer /desktop=spider,800x600 spider.exe or wine explorer

Error in mvpart example
Dear all,
I'm getting an error in one of the stock examples in the 'mvpart' package. I tried:
require(mvpart)
data(spider)
fit3 <- rpart(gdist(spider[,1:12],meth="bray",full=TRUE,sq=TRUE)~water+twigs+reft+herbs+moss+sand,spider,method="dist") #directly from ?rpart
summary(fit3)
...which returned the following:

Puzzling message: "no man files in this package"
Dear R developers,
When building/checking my package (in R 2.6.1 under windows) I run into
some messages that I do not completely understand and that do not give
me precise enough leads to pinpoint where the error in my package is. I
would be very grateful for any suggestions. Did anyone else encounter
the same problem before?
When building or installing the package, I get the message (no error

I think the changelog for this series of conversions
should show that you've validated the change by
inspecting the return call chain at each modified line.
Also, it seems you've cc'd the same mailing lists for
all of the patches modified by this series.
It would be

Different results of coefficients by packages penalized and glmnet
Dear R users:
Recently, I learn to use penalized logistic regression. Two packages
(penalized and glmnet) have the function of lasso.
So I write these code. However, I got different results of coef. Can someone
kindly explain.
# lasso using penalized
library(penalized)
pena.fit2<-penalized(HRLNM,penalized=~CN+NoSus,lambda1=1,model="logistic",standardize=TRUE)

Delete rpart/mvpart cross-validation output
Dear all,
I was wondering if there is a simple way to avoid printing the multiple
cross-validation automatic output to the console of recursive partitionning
functions like rpart or mvpart. For example...

ActiveX Controls Not Working
For a month I've been trying to get ActiveX controls working from the ToolkitCMA.com site with IE6. Some serious weirdness going on.
So now I check what I look like at http://bellsnwhistles.com/bells.html, and it informs me that:

Eh no, I check Help|About IE, and it

different L2 regularization behavior between lrm, glmnet, and penalized? (original question)
Dear Robert,
The differences have to do with diffent scaling defaults.
lrm by default standardizes the covariates to unit sd before applying
penalization. penalized by default does not do any standardization, but
if asked standardizes on unit second central moment. In your example:
x = c(-2, -2, -2, -2, -1, -1, -1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3)
z = c(0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1, 1, 1)
