HABTM relationship with two join tables
Ok, I have a People table, a Shows table, a Techs table, and a
Castmembers table. The people table has contact info about each person,
the techs and castmembers tables have information about the persons
specific role in that sshow. i want to call @show.techs (or somethign
equivelent, I don''t want to start that code yet) and get all the techs
associated with the show, and the

has_many :through a belongs_to relationship
I have users who belong to a group. I also have a room that belongs to
a group. I want to use a has_many through association to link the room
and the users as such:
class Room < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :group
has_many :users, :through => :group
end
The SQL generated for the search is incorrect:
SELECT users.* FROM users INNER JOIN group ON users.group_id =
groups.id WHERE

counter_cache, has_many and belongs_to
I am a bit confused about counter_cache here. The API docs
http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Associations/ClassMethods.html
say that only the belongs_to association can take the :counter_cache
option. When I try to use it on a has_many I get an "unknown key(s):
counter_cache" error.
Why would this be the case? belongs_to means that this model has a
field with an id

belongs_to and has_many
I know this has been rehashed many times, but I don''t get it.
I can''t find it documented to were I understand all the parts. I can
make this work using Rails database design conventions, but in this case
I am not able to do that.
I find examples, but the ones I find do not follow the conventions.
They also do not give enough information to understand what is going on.

Problems with STI in has_many/belongs_to in Rails 1.1
I have a problem that surfaced in my attempt to upgrade my application
to Rails 1.1.
We have a STI model on the "belongs_to" side of a has_many/belongs_to
relationship. All my unit tests for this model pass, and the
relationships all seem to work fine.
But in my functional tests, I''m getting errors. I''ve traced it back
into the call to the has_many

has_many :through with has_many/has_many join models
It seems that using a join model that joins with two has_many''s will
fail to generate proper SQL
class StudentSemesterRecord < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :semester
has_many :discipline_records, :through => :semester
end
class Semester < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :student_semester_records
has_many :discipline_records

habtm vs. has_many/belongs_to
In AWDWR David says (pg 232),
"When a Join Wants to Be a Model:
While a many-to-many relation with attributes can often seem like the
obvious choice, it?s often a mirage for a missing domain model. When
it is, it can be advantageous to convert this relationship into a
real model
and decorate it with a richer set of behavior. This lets you
accompany the
data with methods.

belongs_to, has_one, has_many question (again?)
Hi All,
Probably this has been asked numerous times, I apologize already!
Can somebody point me to a good tutorial on how Rails works with
relations?
I know about database design and normalization, I also know about
programming in general (and OOP for that matter).
Only thing I can say is that I''m following the "Four days on Rails"
tutorial by John McCreesh.
He writes

has_many & belongs_to with Plugins (login_engine)
Hello list,
Probably a newbie question but couldn''t find the answer in the archives.
I am using the login_engine Plugin to implement the login functionality. I
have a JournalEntry model that interacts with the journal_entries table. I
would like to link the journal entries to the user who entered it.
Essentially, it is a one to many relationship between the model User(from

Curious why this doesn't work. (has_many, belongs_to)
Two Models.
class Gm < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :pool
# mode code here.
end
class Pool < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :gms
# mode code here.
end
Testing code through the console.
>> gm_list.each{ | gm | puts " GM name: #{ gm.user_name } belongs to Pool: #{ gm.pool.pool_name } " }; nil
GM name: John belongs to Pool: RHP 07-08 Season - Career League

has_many and belongs_to in rails 2.0.2 (child.Parent) is not working
Hi All
I have 2 models working well in rails 1.2.6 :
class TypeService < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :Services
end
class Service < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :TypeService
end
I was able to get the name of the service with Rails 1.2.3:
s = Service.find(1)
name_type_service = s.TypeService.name <<-- Now with rails 2.0.2
that doesn''t work
With rails 2.0.2

Naming rights_roles join model using has_many :through and polymorphic associations
Hi.
I have a couple of best practices questions regarding polymorphic
associations, naming join tables and user permissions.
Currently I have implemented the user authentication model from the
rails recipes book. Basically it goes something like this:
MODEL CLASSES:
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
has_and_belongs_to_many :roles
end
class Role < ActiveRecord::Base

Manipulating has_many :through associations
Hi,
I haven''t done any associations before, so please forgive my incorrect
use of terminology...
If I set up a has_many :through association, can I manipulate the
associated instances directly (like an Array), or do I need to
manipulate the join model?
For example, suppose I have two classes and the associated join model:
class foo
has_many :foo_bars
has_many :bars, :through

prevent duplicate inserts with has_many :through ??
Does anyone have an efficient/elegant way to prevent duplicate inserts
when using a has_many :through relationship.
So I have something like this:
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :favorite_teams
has_many :teams, :through => :favorite_teams
end
class FavoriteTeams < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :user
belongs_to :team
end
class Teams < ActiveRecord::Base

I''m having a bit of trouble with my first Rails app.

Confusion about has_many / belongs_to ...
I have a table called players and its model Player, and I have a table
called games and its model Game.
In the games table I have:
player1_id int(11)
player2_id int(11)
I want the tables to be associated so that I can access the player
objects using table.player1 and table.player2 rather than having to
lookup the objects based on the ids.
I am not sure how to go about this but I suspect I

Scaffolding to use has_many and belongs_to ?
What does everyone on this list think about enhancing scaffolding
somehow so that a "has_many" relationship will automatically drop the
<select> box into the view to reference the "belongs_to" part of the
view?
I think scaffolding is great but I am always adding the <select> boxes
to reference the parent association. Do you think this would be
useful? just a

More than one has_many :through association between the same 2 models
I wonder if you can have more than one has_many :through association between
2 models.
For example...
I have a model Teacher and a model Class
Now, 1 Teacher works in many Classes, right?. So I need a join model like
class Work < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :teacher
belongs_to :class
end
But I also would like to know if a teacher CAN teach a class before I
