DRb server & aaf gem
I''m having problems getting the DRb server running with the aaf gem.
I tried it with the plugin installed in my application, and it
worked. I suspect the problem has something to do with the startup
scripts expecting certain files to be in certain relative file paths.
Any insights are appreciated, and maybe if you have time you can
update the wiki document :)
Thanks for a great

lock index when not using drb server?
We all know that using ferret/aaf without the drb server is not
thread-safe-- but why not? Would it be so hard to sacrifice
performance by using a simple locking system?
Very often I run into a situation where I want to quickly stage a
project, and I want to use a few mongrels but don''t want to configure
every last piece of the system, including the drb server. It would be
nice

When to restart the DRb server?
Under what circumstances does the DRb server need to be restarted?
When new models are being indexed? When a model changes?
Thanks,

Offline indexing issues
If I disable ferret in my environment file and then run a cron job
every hour to index the records that have been added/changed, do I
enable Ferret just in the script that does the hourly indexing? Or do
I somehow need to tell the process that runs the Ferret DRB server
that it should start writing to the index again? Thanks in advance.

acts_as_ferret and capistrano
Hi,
I''d like to share the ferret indexes between deployments of a Rails app.
At the moment the index is stored in #{RAILS_ROOT}/index meaning that it
gets moved and must be rebuilt after every deploy. I guess the simplest
solution would be to put it under log/ which is already shared by
capistrano, any other ideas?
Also, script/ferret_stop doesn''t work when run on a fresh

complete index rebuild using AAF trunk
I am using AAF trunk, and I want a way to rebuild an index on a
production site with little or no interruption to service. The Drb
Server documentation* states that when an index is rebuilt, it is
done in a separate location and then swapped into place when
finished, and so to do a complete rebuild on a live site, one must
take into consideration objects which have been created or

Remote index blocks?
Using the Drb allows me to synchronize writes to the index in a multi
mongrel environment. I was under the impression that the remote index
would not block if two mongrels were searching the index. Is that the
case? This line in ferret_server.rb makes me think otherwise:
# Calls are not queued atm, so this will block until the call
returned.

Question on Deploying a Ferret DRb server
(Sorry if some people see this twice. I originally posted this question
from ruby-forum.com, but didn''t realize that the Ferret forum was a
mirror and that I actually wasn''t a member.)
Anyway,
I''ve read all the documentation I could find, and read most of this
forum, but I''m a still a little confused on running a ferret DRb server.
All the examples seem to be

MySQL has gone away
Hi,
in a production environment we are running into "MySQL server has gone
away" errors (see below) when we call rebuild_index in aaf. This happens
sporadically.
Any suggestions for what might be wrong or workarounds? I guess we try a
reconnect before we call rebuild_index?

strange behavior after switching to DRb server
After switching to the DRb server, I am experiencing strange behavior
when sorting on score. My app was working as expected before the switch.
Both before and after the switch, my app sorts properly on other
fields, such as date.
For sorting on score, I am using the following option
find_by_contents option:
:sort => Ferret::Search::SortField::SCORE
Before switching to DRb, this worked

Ferret DRB, UTF-8, Mongrel
I have spent days trying to figure out how to get UTF-8 working with my
site.
Here''s my environment:

Ruby 1.8.4 (2005-12-24 [i386-linux]
Rails 1.2.3

more specific queries via IndexReader
We would like to show a list of "most recently added terms", meaning,
the results of this query:
Resource.aaf_index.ferret_index.reader.terms(:summary)
BUT, only returning terms from a certain set of documents (in our
case, we are going to filter by creation data).
Is this possible?
Thanks,

Error on manual indexing
I''m having some problems with getting the drb server to work correctly
on my production server. As a workaround I tried disabling automatic
indexing and have a cron job manually update the index every hour or so.
I disabled the automatic indexing with:
def ferret_enabled?
false
end
But whenever I try Page.rebuild_index
I get a ''wrong number of arguments''

programatically stopping acts_as_ferret drb server
I need a way to kill the ferret_server drb process programatically, so I
can start/stop it as part of the capistrano deployment process.
This should be as simple as adding some sort of stop method to
ActsAsFerret::Remote::Server. I was just messing around and was able to
do it by modifying method_missing to look for the :stop method and then
calling DRb.thread.exit -- this is not good enough for

properly restarting mongrel instances
Hi folks.
Using mongrel_rails and the mongrel_cluster capistrano recipes, I
often encounter a situation where some of the mongrel processes don''t
die in time to be restarted. The output of capistrano will tell me
something like "mongrel on port 8001 is already up", but that''s only
because capistrano/mongrel_rails failed to take it down in the first
place.
The solution

Ferret DRB - can add/edit index, but can''t search
I''m trying to use the Ferret DRB server to avoid concurrency issues when

Memory staying high even after calling MiddleMan.gc!(Time.now)
Hi there,
I''m just implementing backgroundrb to see if I can offload some
"processor intensive" areas of my rails app (generating PDFs with
lots of imagery in them, using rFPDF and rMagick as well).
So far I''ve been able to figure it out fairly quickly....it''s a
pretty cool tool!
Some questions though:
First:

Strange Connection refused error acts_as_ferret server
I am having a strange problem starting the acts_as_ferret Drb server on
a particular Linux machine (Debian Etch). The same setup works fine on
my Mac (OSX).
Without the Rails application running (yes, I''ve checked several times)
I get the following error if I try to start the ferret server and one of
my models contains :remote => true for acts_as_ferret:
