Offline indexing issues
If I disable ferret in my environment file and then run a cron job
every hour to index the records that have been added/changed, do I
enable Ferret just in the script that does the hourly indexing? Or do
I somehow need to tell the process that runs the Ferret DRB server
that it should start writing to the index again? Thanks in advance.

disabling automatic indexing in acts_as_ferret
I''d like to be able to enable/disable the automatic indexing of
documents acts_as_ferret does. Something like MyModel.disable_indexing
MyModel.enable_indexing would be perfect. I need this because I do some
indexing that requires visiting the parents of the model objects and my
import method imports the children first, so the information isn''t there
yet. I''d like to

Prevent indexing depending on variable
Hi guys, I''m using attachment_fu on my site to allow users to upload
pictrues. Pictures can be set to only allow friends to view them.
The problem I''m having is ferret is indexing the images along with their
thumbnails which means I end up with a lot of broken images in the
search. Also it''s indexing images whose privacy is set to 1 (friends
only).
How could I go about

Remote index blocks?
Using the Drb allows me to synchronize writes to the index in a multi
mongrel environment. I was under the impression that the remote index
would not block if two mongrels were searching the index. Is that the
case? This line in ferret_server.rb makes me think otherwise:
# Calls are not queued atm, so this will block until the call
returned.

Error on manual indexing
I''m having some problems with getting the drb server to work correctly
on my production server. As a workaround I tried disabling automatic
indexing and have a cron job manually update the index every hour or so.
I disabled the automatic indexing with:
def ferret_enabled?
false
end
But whenever I try Page.rebuild_index
I get a ''wrong number of arguments''

Error : End-of-File Error occured at <except.c>
Everything was working fine till last night. This morning I have many
errors.
I am using acts_as_ferret. Last updated around a month ago on linux.
There are two different type of exceptions. I have over 12 exception
emails but these are the two distince types.
First exception:

Acts_As_Ferret: disable_ferret and Callbacks
Does disable_ferret monkey with callbacks at all? I have a model in my
application that has associated models which perform callbacks after
their validation (they''re all instantiated around the same time). I
recently added a conditional call to disable ferret provided a flag and
I''m finding these callbacks aren''t quite working right.
Here''s a code sample:

ferret acts_as_ferret and performance
hello,
I am actually indexing thousands of 1ko text documents using ferret and
acts_as_ferret, and i face performance problems.
I takes me hours to index 20 000 1ko text documents.
Methology used :
I create and object, fulfill it with the text, and save it. So it is
automaticly indexed.
Is there a way to make it faster ? ( remove the auto optimize option
somewhere ?)
Thank you if you have any

Reducing dependency on remote ferret process
Hi.
We use FerretDrb for search. If the ferret process is down, our entire
application comes down the moment we try to save a model which is indexed.
Is there a way to decouple this relationship such that we can somehow
resume normal operations despite ferret being down and not index the model?
Thanks.

custom sort routine
is it possible to write a custom sort routine for ferret?
I use ferret right now to index all my products. One of the variables
in these product documents is the product popularity, where 1 = best
selling production, 2 = 2nd best, etc..
Right now, I''m just sorting by the popularity column in my search
results, although this doesn''t always provide "good" results,

Questions bout SVM
Hi everyone,
Can someone please help me in these questions?:
1)if I use crossvalidation with svm, do I have to use this equation to calculate RMSE?:
mymodel <- svm(myformula,data=mydata,cross=10)
sqrt(mean(mymodel$MSE))
But if I don’t use crossvalidation, I have to use the following to calculate RMSE:
mymodel <- svm(myformula,data=mydata)
mytest

Ferret-talk Digest, Vol 25, Issue 3
Thanks Stuart. I thought I had read somewhere that rebuild_index
built the index in a different location and then swapped it, but
after looking at the code (in local_index.rb) this doesn''t appear to
be the case. That might explain why the ferret server crashes
sometimes when a search takes place during a reindex.
I wouldn''t be doing exactly the same thing as this but

Exporting to text files
I have dose response data analyzed with the package 'drc'.
'summary(mymodel)' prints my kinetic parameters. I want
that text in an ASCII text file. I want to get exactly what I
would get if I copied and pasted from the terminal window.
I've read the documentation on data export to text files here:

How to extract vectors from an arima() object and into a data frame?
This should be very easy, but alas, I'm very new to R. My end goal is to
calculate p-values from arima().
Let's say I just ran this:
> MyModel <- arima(y[1:58], order=c(1,0,0), xreg=MyData[1:58,7:14],
> method="ML")
> MyModel
And I see:
arima(x = y[1:58], order = c(1, 0, 0), xreg = MyData[1:58, 7:14], method =
"ML")
Coefficients:

dynamically adding static (class) methods to a class
Hello again,
I guess this is more of a Ruby question, but here goes anyways...
I want to intercept all calls to non existent class methods and then
call an existing class method with the non existent name.
In code...
class MyModel < ActiveRecord::Base
def MyModel.method_missing(symbol, *args)
MyModel.func(symbol.id2name)
end
def MyModel.func(func_called)

Instance or local vars for field helpers in partial template
I''m getting confused.
If I have a view (.rhtml), I can use a field helper like:
<%= text_field :mymodel, :attribute %>
This uses the value from @mymodel.attribute
Now, if I am rendering a template normally (i.e. not partial), I would
expect @mymodel to be a model object defined as an instance variable in
the controller.
However, if I am rendering a partial template, I

Problema con la función lm
Buenos días:
Tengo un determinado código en R que en una máquina funciona correctamente, pero en otra devuelve un error del tipo "Error en as.formula(mymodel): Objeto ''mymodel'' no encontrado''"
En mi código:
mymodel <- "y ~ x1[, 1] + x2[, 1]"
res <- lm (as.formula(mymodel))
¿Qué puede estar motivando ese error?. La máquina en la que falla

Calculating AIC for the whole model in VAR
Hello!
I am using package "VAR".
I've fitted my model:
mymodel<-VAR(mydata,myp,type="const")
I can extract the Log Liklihood for THE WHOLE MODEL:
logLik(mymodel)
How could I calculate (other than manually) the corresponding Akaike
Information Criterion (AIC)?
I tried AIC - but it does not take mymodel:
AIC(mymodel)
# numeric(0)
Thank you!

Referring to an object name from within a function
Can anyone show me how to refer to an object name that is passed to a
function, from within the function?
For example:
MyModel <- 1
test <- function(x) {
if(x == 1) {cat("x is a valid object.\n")}
}
test(x)
What I would like this to do is pass MyModel to function test, and if it
passes a test, be able to print "MyModel is a valid object."
Thanks.
