Ferret against Java Lucene index
Hi,
I am working on a project which has a large Lucene index in place. Can
(any version of) Ferret be used against an index built using Java
Lucene?
Thanks,

Ferret 0.9.0-alpha (port of Apache Lucene to pure ruby)
Hi Folks,
I''ve just released version 0.9.0. This latest version of Ferret is an
alpha release. I have removed the old c extension and Ferret is now
running on a fully ported C library. This has allowed some huge
performance improvements both with regard to memory and CPU usage.
There will probably be a few portability issues to start with. It has
been developed on Linux so it should

How to proceed with incorporating Ferret?
Hi,
I''ve listened in to this mail list for quite a while now but not
doing anything with Ferret until I was ready to incorporate it. I''ve
used Lucene for years, but not Ferret.
I downloaded and installed the ''bleeding edge'' version (lets call it
0.10.9.1). There appears to be a significant re-working of the API
happening. It all looks good. But there

Lucene index compatibility
I would like to generate a Lucene index in Java (of plain text values
only,) and be able to use that index in ferret. I''ve seen many mixed
answers to this question, so I''m hoping some of you can help.
Thanks!

[Ferret] Serious memory leak on Joyent / TextDrive / Solaris
There is serious memory leak bug in ferret. I''m having this error on
TextDrive Container (aka. Joyent Accelerators) OpenSolaris with Ferret
0.11.4
It happens while searching for some terms with accented or special
characters.
This makes ferret to allocate lots of memory (usually reaching 3+ GB)
and failing if another query like this is executed.
Any ideas on that, could this be locale

Ferret not able to read a Lucene Index?
Hi all,
Having problems trying to get Ferret to read an index generated by
Lucene.
Am I right in thinking Ferret should be able to read a Lucene generated
index no problem?
Using the code snippets detailed in
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/64099#new
Any advice gratefully received.
Many Thanks,

Ferret+Lucene Index
We use Nutch and Lucene for our heavy duty text analysis jobs but I?m trying
to use ferrret to do some experiments. I understood that Ferret used the
same index format as lucene but I cannot look into a lucene index with
ferret and cannot read a ferret index with luke (the lucene index browser).
Am I doing somehting wrong or have the formats diverged?

Ferret 0.11.4.win32 indexing speed vs Ferret 0.10.9.win32
Firstly, thanks Dave for all your hard work. Ferret Rocks!,
I am just testing 0.11.4.win32 and it seems to work just fine, however
the index creation phase of my app is perhaps 3x slower under 0.11.4 vs
0.10.9
Details follow:
System: windows xp sp2, index on local hard disk, Ruby 1.8.6
Run #1, Ferret 0.10.9
- Reboot
- Build index, 35,000 rows added in 297 seconds
-
Run #2, Ferret 0.11.4

Proximity searching in rdig ferret
Lucene has a syntax "foo bar"~10 for finding foo within 10 words of bar.
Does ferret support this feature? (the ~ is used for fuzzy queries) Does
rdig?
This could be a deal breaker for me ''cos I really need proximity

How to make custom TokenFilter?
In the O''reilly Ferret short cuts, I found very useful example for me.
It explains how to make custom Tokenizer.
But that book doesn''t explain how to make custom Filter.
(especially, how to implement the #text=() method)
I''m a newbee and I don''t understand how do I create my own custom
Filter.
Are there some good source code examples??

ferret/lucene syntax
I jut noticed this example in the lucene documentation*:
title:(+return +"pink panther")
I have been using this syntax:
+title:(return AND "pink panther")
Seemingly with success. Are both acceptable? I couldn''t find any
documentation on "the plus sign" itself.
Thanks for any pointers.

Windows progress
Hi there,
What''s the current status of the Windows port? I may be in a position
to lend a hand over the next couple of weeks - where should I start
looking? And what''s the best way to get SVN HEAD? This happens:
$ svn checkout svn://www.davebalmain.com/ferret/trunk ferret
svn: Can''t connect to host ''www.davebalmain.com'': Connection refused

Ferret/AAF Stability?
Hello. I''m the author of DataMapper (http://datamapper.org), and am
trying to choose what Full-Text-Indexing engine/plugin I want to
include by default. I was hoping you guys could help. :-)
Sphinx comes highly recommended, but without live index updates, it
just doesn''t seem practical for most of my work.
I''m most experienced with Solr, but the whole HTTP::Request and

Ferret and non latin characters support
I''ve successfully installed ferret and acts_as_ferret and have no
problem with utf-8 for accented characters. It returns correct results
fot e.g. fran?ais. My problem is with non latin characters (Persian
indeed). I have tested different locales with no success both on Debian
and Mac. Any idea?

Benchmark - Thanks Dave for making this gnawer this FAST!!
Hi List,
I''ve took some time and made some tests on the performance of
java-lucene, hyperestraier and ferret as Dave encourages the community
of ferret to do so.
Quite intersting numbers. Ferret indeed deserves to be called a
high-performance port!!
It''s MyFirstBenchmark (

don''t be too cruel on
