package post install instructions
Hello,
I've looked in tools:::.install_packages for some sort of hook that
would let packages developers point to further instructions after a
package is installed. For example, some packages need to setup
environment variables, ...
Is there something I have missed ?

Rjava, RImageJ, and/or S4 question.
I am out of my league with this question. The following code starts the java imaging program ImageJ from within R, and displays an image (assuming ImageJ is installed on your computer).
library(RImageJ)
img <- IJ$openImage( file.choose() ) #pick an available .tif file
img$show() # make the image object visible
# An image is now displayed
# find out about the objects involved

duplicate STRSXP : shallow copy ?
Hello,
As this little program illustrates, duplicating a STRSXP does not seem
deep enough.
require( inline )
fx <- cfunction( signature( x = "character"), '
SEXP y = PROTECT( duplicate( x ) );
int n = LENGTH(x);
int nc = 0 ;
char* p = 0 ;
for( int i=0; i<n; i++){
p = (char*)( CHAR( STRING_ELT( y , i ) ) );
nc = strlen( p ) ;
for( int j=0; j<nc; j++){

Hello everybody,
I'm running R under Mac OS 10.6.3 on a MacBook 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I've recently installed R 2.11.0 and the RImageJ library v. 0.1-142. When trying to follow the example given in the package manual and I get the following error:

inject html code into Rd file
Hello,
I'm trying to inject html code into an Rd file. For example :
\name{test}
\alias{test}
\title{test}
\description{
\if{html}{
\Sexpr[stage=render,results=text,echo=FALSE]{
"<b>hello</b>"
}
}
}
when this file is rendered, instead of having "hello" in bold, I get
<b>hello</b>, i.e. characters < and > are replaced with html entities :

Remove all spaces from a string so it can be used by assign()
Hi
I have a string "56 Fe [1]" that I would like to use as a variable name by using "assign" however I think the spaces and brackets might be causing R some trouble.
How can I change the string so that it just becomes 56Fe1 and can be used as a variable name.
Thank You
Kurt

S4 dispatch and S3 "connection" objects
Hello,
I'm trying to get S4 dispatch on S3 "connection" objects.
So I do :
setOldClass( "connection" )
and then :
setGeneric( "bling", function(object) standardGeneric( "bling" ) )
setMethod( "bling", "connection", function(object) cat( "gotcha ",
as.integer(object), "\n" ) )
but I get :

Why is srcref of length 6 and not 4 ?
Hello,
Consider this file (/tmp/test.R) :
<file>
f <- function( x, y = 2 ){
z <- x + y
print( z )
}
</file>
I get this in R 2.7.2 :
> p <- parse( "/tmp/test.R" )
> str( attr( p, "srcref" ) )
List of 1
$ :Class 'srcref' atomic [1:4] 1 1 4 1
.. ..- attr(*, "srcfile")=Class 'srcfile' length 4 <environment>

more special completions
Hi,
Would it be possible to add the capability for functions to register how
they would like to complete themselves.
Currently, there is the .addFunctionInfo, but it allows only functions
to register a static list of potential completions, I was thinking of a
way to register not a fixed list of possible completions, but a
__function__ that would calculate completions dynamically.
This could

split.data.frame
Hello,
I very much enjoy "with" and "subset" semantics for data frames and was
wondering if we could have something similar with split, basically by
evaluating the second argument "with" the data frame :
split.data.frame
function(x, f, drop = FALSE, ...){
call <- match.call( )
fcall <- call( "with", data = call[["x"]],

combine UserDefinedDatabase and regular environments
Hello,
Is it possible to have the effect of UserDefinedDatabase outside of
"attached" environments ? Can I disguise an environment of the
sys.frames() as a UserDefinedDatabase ?
This seems to suggest that it might be possible :
> f <- function(){ e <- environment(); class(e) <-
"UserDefinedDatabase"; ff }
> f()

Why does the lexical analyzer drop comments ?
It happens in the token function in gram.c:
c = SkipSpace();
if (c == '#') c = SkipComment();
and then SkipComment goes like that:
static int SkipComment(void)
{
int c;
while ((c = xxgetc()) != '\n' && c != R_EOF) ;
if (c == R_EOF) EndOfFile = 2;
return c;
}
which effectively drops comments.
Would it be possible to keep the information

xterm256
This is the first release of the xterm256 package.
xterm256 is a small package that takes advantage of the 256 color mode
of xterm, enabling use of foreground and background colors in the R

arguments:
- (x) the text to style
- (bg) the background color to use
- (fg) the foreground color to use

assignInNamespace and new bindings
Hello,
assignInNamespace refuses to assign an object to a name that is not
already used in the namespace.
Something like this would make it possible:

R_parseVector and syntax error [was: error messages while parsing with rniParse]
Hello,
[I'm redirecting this here from stats-rosuda-devel]
When parsing R code through R_parseVector and the code generates an
error (syntax error), is there a way to grab the error.
It looks like yyerror populates the buffer "R_ParseErrorMsg", but then
the variable is not part of the public api.
Would it be possible to add yet another entry point to the parser that

profiler and loops
Hello,
(This is follow up from this thread:
http://www.nabble.com/execution-time-of-.packages-td22304833.html but
with a different focus)
I am often confused by the result of the profiler, when a loop is
involved. Consider these two scripts:
script1:
Rprof( )
x <- numeric( )
for( i in 1:10000){
x <- c( x, rnorm(10) )
}
Rprof( NULL )
print( summaryRprof( ) )

internal and external debugging [was: [R] step by step debugger in R?]
Hello all
I'm coming late to this discussion, and my comments may now be beside the point-- but I have been intending to ask what people think of the pros & cons of internal and external (e.g. 'debug' package) debuggers. When I wrote 'debug', the internal debugger just didn't do what I wanted, but maybe things have changed-- hence this email, to find out. The
