New package `np' - nonparametric kernel smoothing methods for mixed datatypes
Dear R users, A new package titled `np' is now available from CRAN. The package implements recently developed kernel methods that seamlessly handle the mix of continuous, unordered, and ordered factor datatypes often found in applied settings. The package also allows users to create their own nonparametric/semiparametric routines using high-level function calls (via the function npksum())

Centos 5.1 ext3 filesystem limit
Centos 5.1 documentation states that the supported ext3 filesystem limit is 16TB, yet I have a 9.5TB partition that is claimed to be too large: mke2fs 1.39 (29-May-2006) mke2fs: Filesystem too large. No more than 2**31-1 blocks (8TB using a blocksize of 4k) are currently supported. Am I missing something? > uname -a Linux fileserver.sharcnet.ca 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5 #1 SMP Wed Jan

boxplots of 1 datum AND comparing rank and boolean
Q: When R does 'plot()' in a context that yields boxplots, is there a way to force it to draw something even if there are only 1 or two data in the category? I'd like for it to draw the data, perhaps using the outlier symbols. My code is (*** marks the line in question) is the following, for R-1.0.0: d <- read.table("nserc-results-pgsb", header=FALSE,

Threshhold Models in gnlm
Hello, I am interested in fitting a generalized nonlinear regression (gnlr) model with negative binomial errors. I have found Jim Lindsay's package that will do gnlr, but I have having trouble with the particular model I am interested in fitting. It is a threshhold model, where below a certain value of one of the parameters being fitted, the model changes. Here is a sample: Cones:

nonparametric logistic regression based on locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (lowess)
Dear UseRs: Recently, I have read an article regarding the association between age and lymph node metastases. http://jco.ascopubs.org/content/27/18/2931.long In statistical analysis, the authors stated "Because a nonlinear relationship between age and lymph node involvement was expected based on existing literature, lymph node involvement was also regressed on age using nonparametric

Problem specifying Gamma distribution in lme4/glmer
Dear R and lme4 users- I am trying to fit a mixed-effects model, with the glmer function in lme4, to right-skewed, zero-inflated, non-normal data representing understory grass and forb biomass (continuous) as a function of tree density (indicated by leaf-area). Thus, I have tried to specify a Gamma distribution with a log-link function but consistently receive an error as follows: >

tsdiag and tsStructure for np,ns,nt and nl determination
Hi R-Helpers, I'm dealing with the STL procedure and trying to apply the tsdiag and StructTS onto the ts object to analyse the different parameters which need to be set. How can I use the tsStructure & tsdiag to create a seasonal, trend and cycle subseries plot so that I can select & analyse the correct np,ns, nt and nl? The problem is that too much signal goes into the seasonal

np package, KleinSpady estimator, error when I estimate the bootstrapped standard errors
Dear all, I am using np package in order to estimate a model with Klein and Spady estimator. To estimate the model I use KS <- npindexbw (xdat=X, ydat=Y, bandwidth.compute=TRUE, method="kleinspady", optim.maxit=10^3, ckertype="epanechnikov", ckerorder=2) and to estimate beta hats standard errors I use KSi <- npindex(KS, gradients=T, boot.num=300) vcov(KSi) This is

error in optimization when I include constant term in Klein and Spady (np package)
Dear all, I am trying to use the np package for the estimation of a model with Klein and Spady's semiparametric estimator. When though, I include a constant term ( a column with 1s in X) then the following message appear: Multistart 1 of 3...Error in optim(c(beta, h), fn = optim.fn, gr = NULL, method = optim.method, : non-finite value supplied by optim So, how can I include a constant
