new package: effects
I've uploaded to CRAN a new package called effects. The package contains functions for tabular or graphical display of terms in a linear or generalized linear model, and is particularly suitable for models that contain terms -- such as main effects and interactions, or polynomial regressors -- related by marginality (hierarchy). A draft paper describing the package is located at

R-News submission
Dear Roman, I've attached the latex file for the copy-edited version of your manuscript -- correcting English grammar and style, and making the paper conform more closely to the R News style. Can you check this over to confirm that I've not altered the meaning of your text and to approve the copy-edits? Thanks, John -------------------------------- John Fox Department of Sociology

Effect display of proportional odds model
Dear useRs, I very much like the effect display of the proportional odds model on page 29 (Figure 8) of the following paper by John Fox: http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Papers/logit-effect-displays.pdf It really gives a very concise overview of the model. I would like to use it to illustrate the proportional odds mixed models we fit here for a project on Diabetes but I can't seem to reproduce

pseudo dataframes with RODBC
Dear R-devel list members, For several years, I've maintained for my private use and for demonstrations a set of functions [e.g., for indexing, with(), summary(), etc.] that employ the RODBC package and a database to provide a "pseudo" data frame. Row "indexes" can be specified as SQL queries. I know that the idea isn't original, and I haven't done anything with

For the present, this is the development version of the Rcmdr package (1.1-0), available at <http://socserv.socsci.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Misc/Rcmdr/index.html>. Problem with UTF-8 text in the Rcmdr package
Dear list members, I've attached some email correspondence with Jaro Lajovic (with his permission), detailing a problem with the Slovenian translation file for the Rcmdr package. In brief, while certain UTF-8 characters used in Slovenian used to appear properly in older versions of R, some characters do not display properly in the Rcmdr menus and output window under R 2.7.x.
