TeachingDemos install bumps out with 'Out of memory!'
The same thing that happened to my 'maptools'
also hits me here: It eats all memory until the system dies.
Alas, in this case, no Ubuntu package.
Since I installed some tens of packages with the same method in the
meantime, I guess something must be wrong with the install.packages; at
least on Ubuntu9.10, amd64.

New Package: TeachingDemos
This is to announce the new package TeachingDemos now available on
CRAN.
This is a collection of functions that I have used to demonstrate
different ideas in various classes taught. Some of the first ones I
wrote just to help me visualize what was happening, they latter were
usefull in teaching others (both in a 1 on 1 setting, and in classroom
type settings).
A few examples (more are

Rcmdr 1.3-0 and RcmdrPlugins.TeachingDemos
I'd like to announce a new version, 1.3-0, of the Rcmdr package. The Rcmdr
package provides a basic-statistics graphical user interface (GUI) to R.
Beyond small changes and additions, this new version of the package makes
provision for "plug-ins" that permit extension of the Rcmdr GUI without
altering and rebuilding the Rcmdr source package or modifying the installed
package. An R

behavior of squishplot in TeachingDemos
Hi list,
I wonder if anyone has had this experience with squishplot() in the TeachingDemos package.
Taking the example from the ?image help page,
library(TeachingDemos)
x <- 10*(1:nrow(volcano))
y <- 10*(1:ncol(volcano))
layout(matrix(c(1,2,3,4),ncol=2,byrow=TRUE),height=c(2,1))
## 1st plot
op <- squishplot(range(x),range(y),1)
image(x, y, volcano, col = terrain.colors(100))
par(op)

TeachingDemos question: my.symbols() alignment problems in complicated layout
Hello,
After usefull suggestions by Paul Murrell, i have been trying to use
my.symbols to plot arrows of varying angles on my plot in order to create
a time series of wind direction... however,i have been unable to figure
out how the allignment of symbols works...
below i have included a simplified code that illustrates my problem:

color scale mapped to B/W
In an R graphic, I'm using
cond.col <- c("green", "yellow", "red")
to represent a quantitative variable, where green means 'OK', yellow
represents 'warning'
and red represents 'danger'. Using these particular color names, in B/W,
red is darkest
and yellow is lightest. I'd like to find color designations to replace

things that break with unix extensions = yes, samba 4.1.5 and osx 10.9 clients?
I'm about to do some testing with a an OSX 10.9 client connected to sernet
samba 4.1.5 to see what things work and don't both from the finder and from
the terminal with unix extensions = yes and no. Does anyone know of any
show stopping issues that occur with unix extensions = yes and the latest
samba (or 3.6.x, or 4.0.x a) and the latest OSX (or latest update with 10.7
& 10.8)?

Obtaining the value of x at a given value of y in a smooth.spline object
I have some data fit to a smooth.spline object as follows: (x=vector of data
for the predictor variable, y=vector of data for the response variable)
fit <- smooth.spline(x,y)
Now, given a spline fit point y_new, I want to be able to find out what
value of x_new yielded this fit value. How to do so?
(This problem is the inverse of the predict.smooth.spline function, which
takes x_new as input

Could someone recommend a small example for spline regression, please?
I would like to show this to my students, step by step.
Thanks in advance,

R2HTML: output from for-loops
Hi,
I am trying to prepare a report with R2HTML using
HTMLStart(outdir="./html", filename="report", echo=T, HTMLframe=F)
then, for instance, I want to get the output of a loop:
for (i in 1:20) print(summary(rnorm(1000)))
but only the first of summaries really ends up in the html file.
What am I doing wrongly?
Thanks,
Werner

Newbie questions about omega
Dear all,
I am a newbie to Xapian-Omega.
I installed Xapian-Omega (1.2.14) a few days ago on my freebsd NAS server,
and intend to use it to search my CIFS/SMB share.
So far it works fine (I am able to search my share using the omega web
interface), nevertheless I have few newbie questions.
Hoping that somebody can answer my (hopefully not to silly) newbie
questions.

drilling down data on charts
Hey all,
Suppose a=b^2 for starters. I want to be able to create a graph that
displays a initially and if i was to click on 'a' to show 'b' on the chart
itself. Does anyone know if this is possible in R?
Also as an extension (not necessary as yet) to output the above into a
'html' file.
Thanks,
Sachin

Fw: Logistic regresion - Interpreting (SENS) and (SPEC)
Dear Mr Peter Dalgaard and Mr Dieter Menne,
I sincerely thank you for helping me out with my problem. The thing is taht I already have calculated SENS = Gg / (Gg + Bg) = 89.97%
and SPEC = Bb / (Bb + Gb) = 74.38%.
Now I have values of SENS and SPEC, which are absolute in nature. My question was how do I interpret these absolue values. How does these values help me to find out wheher my model is

Scriptaculous + Prototype shrunk to < 50Kb
Maybe I''m anal but I like fat-free JS, so I pulled the Proptotype and core
Scriptaculous files into one single JS file at 49Kb.
It''s "packed" so if you care about that kind of thing, it''s also
"obfuscated".

Subsetting to unique values
I want to take the first row of each unique ID value from a data frame.
For instance
> ddTable <-
data.frame(Id=c(1,1,2,2),name=c("Paul","Joe","Bob","Larry"))
I want a dataset that is
Id Name
1 Paul
2 Bob
> unique(ddTable)
Will give me all 4 rows, and
> unique(ddTable$Id)
Will give me c(1,2), but not accompanied by the name column.
