This was reported to me by a colleague in China, so I may not be
reproducing exactly what they are seeing (which I suspect is rw2011), but
this is what I see:

How to get special (Hershey) font symbols into plot axis labels?
Dear R experts-
I'm running R 1.2.3 (2001-04-26) on Linux.
I need to get special symbols, such as a circle with a dot in it
as used to indicate Solar units in astronomy, into my plot axis labels.
How can I do this?
Using the R documentation on the Hershey font sets, one can plot
a Solar symbol within the world coordinates of a plot like this:
>plot(1:10,1:10)

contour() should handle the asp parameter
Hi all,
To my knowledge, the current version of contour.default() does not handle the 'asp' parameter. This can be embarassing when displaying eg geographical maps, etc... Submitted to the opinion of more experienced R programmers, contour.defaut() function should be changed according to the followings:
line 7: add = FALSE,asp=NA,...)
line 33: plot.window(xlim, ylim,

X11 and vfonts modules on AIX 5.2
I am trying to get R-2.2.1 to pass make check on an AIX 5.2 at work (I know R-2.2.1 is not the latest release, but I encountered make errors in my attempts to install either R-2.3.0 or the R-patched_2006-05-10 on the version of AIX I am on. I will post those errors in a separate posting from this.)
So far, configure and make finish without error for R-2.2.1 using gnu make, gcc-4.1.0, and

Symbol escape sequence in xlab
I would like to label an x-axis with the nabla symbol. I have tried this
with the following symbol escape sequence
plot(1:5, 1:5, xlab=""); title(xlab="\\dl", vfont=c("serif symbol",
"plain"))
but I got the warning message
parameter "vfont" couldn't be set in high-level plot() function
Is it possible to use a symbol escape

Hershey fonts and substitute()
Hello R users,
I am new to R, so this may be a very stupid question. I need to
subscript the dotted circle (Hershey escape sequence "\\SO") to a
string. I tried using
text(.5,.5,substitute( R[disk] == 5 R["\\SO"] ) )
but it turns out to be a syntax error.
Do you have any suggestion?
Thanks

LaTeX in system()
Dear list,
I want to run latex from an R script:
system("latex mysource.tex")
or:
texi2dvi("mysource.tex", pdf = TRUE, clean = FALSE, quiet = TRUE,
texi2dvi = latex)
but latex does not seem to be on the search path:
/bin/sh: line 1: latex: command not found.
Although 'printenv PATH' tells me that the usr/texbin is looked for

FW: Point and Print
As an updatee to my last post, things are still not working! The drivers
did get added but I'm still not sure whether I achieved this via the Add
Printer Wizard or despite error messages the rpcclient adddriver did
work. I did wonder if the lsa_io_sec_qos: length c does not match size 8
error is because the printer name is too long, especially as when I
tried a shorter name such as HP2300 -

Point and Print
I recently posted regarding problems configuring Samba. These have all
been fixed but I am now struggling with the point and print facility. I
have attempted to upload the drivers from Windows XP workstations but
this seems to do nothing. So plan B was to manually copy the files to
the appropriate print$ share folder, so far so good. The problem I now
have is that the rpcclient utility simply

FW: Samba config
Further to my last post I decided to BUY a copy Suse 9.1 including Samba
3. Not only was Suse very easy to setup I managed to get Samba up and
running without too many problems and can now print from Windows clients
via Samba. My only remaining challenge is setting up point and print.
Thanks for the responses.

FW: Re: Access Denied touching shared CUPS printer
After much trying I have finally got this to work and I'm slightly
embarassed to admit that the old RTFM tripped me up. In the Samba 3
HOWTO - the official one, rather than the draft I was originally using -
it states quite clearly that to get point 'n' print to work "use client
driver" needs to be set to "no" in the [global] section of smb.conf, and
the samba

Samba config
Hi I?m having difficulty configuring Samba running on FreeBSD. Samba
version is 2.2.8a. The scenario is that we have an NT4 domain and I am
looking to migrate the printers onto Samba. All of the printers are
connected via print servers, mainly HP JetDirect. As far as security is
concerned I am happy for guest/anonymous logon as the server will only
be used for printing but I have set security to

R-1.8.1 is released
I've rolled up R-1.8.1.tgz a short while ago. This is a patch version
mostly fixing a number of issues in 1.8.0, some of which were quite
serious. As usual, a few new features have crept in as well. (See below
for details.)
You can get it from
http://cran.us.r-project.org/src/base/R-1.8.1.tgz
or wait for it to be mirrored at a CRAN site nearer to you. Binaries
