Database Concurrency Without a Web Server?
My Rails application requires a very busy worker process running in the
background at all times. I am launching this non-interactive process
using script/runner. This process is very busy and is communicating
with the MySQL server constantly. As I started putting some load on the
system to test, I started running into performance issues.
I have since discovered that Rails is only using 1

Rails and Offline processing
How are you guys handling threads or server processes that have to,
for example, process the data in your application on a periodic basis?
Cron jobs can do it and then run on the database. But, are there ways
to launch threads within the rails application itself.
I have heard of WebBrick ways, but I am working with lighttpd,
fastcgi? (textdrive if you are really interested).

Applications used in the Rails video?
Hi all,
I just watched the rail video:
http://www.rubyonrails.org/media/video/rails_take2_with_sound.mov
I am just curious. I can tell that the video was done on a Mac, but I
cannot tell which applications were used for editing the code, and for
interfacing with MySQL database.
As far as editing source code, I normally use BBEdit (I''ve used it since
1994), but the editor used in

once a day activity
Say I want to send out an email once a day to people who''s name is "Bob".
Would I use script/runner in conjunction with cron? Or is there
another cool(er) way now?
Thanks,

Running Rails tasks by schedule, instead of an HTTP request.
Hi there
I''m considering Rails for a new web-application planned to be built
from scratch.
The application has an extensive web front, and in fact most of the
application is interfaced through that front and engaged through
clients'' HTTP requests (i.e. the conventional way web-applications and
"dynamic web-sites" work). However, some essential parts are supposed

Integrating multiple applications
I''ve got a couple apps that I use (billing app, support ticket app,
some other custom apps) that I want to integrate into one site. They
will all use the same layout for the most part, and will link between
each other.
When I initially thought of doing this, I figured if I put the apps at
different roots - /billing /support etc - then the links wouldn''t work
at all, because

Heavy e-mail receive
Performance experts,
Normally to receive e-mails is to pipe their content to script/runner
individually from a mail server, sendmail or postfix. Doesn''t this
configuration run like Apache 1.3 with CGI, meaning for each e-mail a
boot of the entire Rails environment and thus low scalability?
Is there anything working like lighttpd-fcgi or going toward its
approach?

Where to put code - controller or model
I have a Rails app that is a directory indexer. It passes the desired
directory path in the url.
There is a user table, and a permissions table (which contains the
volumes each user has permission to see). There is also a volume table,
which contains the available volumes, and a path table, which contains
the paths to every file available on the machine. [There are other
tables, but these

rails equivalent to asp''s Application object?
In asp you have an Application built-in object, which works just like
the Session hash, but it lets you share information among all users of a
given application.
which is the rails equivalent???
and if there isn''t, how would you implement such a thing ? (there would
be concurrency issues to take into account, in fact asp''s application
object has some lock and unlock methods

runners and development/production mode
I''m using a runner script to try and send batch email update, however I
get the impression that the runner is not operating in production mode
and as a result it is falling foul of the system I have in place to
block emails goinc out in development in testing modes.
Is there some way for me to force a runner to operate in a particular
mode, or even to check the mode it is operating in?

Ruby, Rails & Linux - Which distro
Did I sound like our President? :)
<spin>
I didn''t explain myself well. I am not thinking of buying the
identically equipped PC laptop either at the same price.
If I had a $2500-$3000 budget (laptop, Applecare + case etc) I might
consider the Mac, but then in the PC laptop universe there are more
options of going with the slower processors (T2300 or T2400) for about
$1,000 less

ActionMailer without rails
Hi.
Could someone post here a simple example of sending a mail throught a
smtp server from ActionMailer but *outside* rails??
I mean, a simple script starting with:
require ''rubygems''
require_gem ''actionmailer''
#stuff that sends some text by smtp
I''ve been trying but I can''t get it to work.
Thanks everybody.

Question about interaction of external processes and a Rails app
Hi,
I am planing and developing a larger rails app, where all the
administration, configuration is done through the rails app. And the
rails apps primary purpose is to display and search through data stored
in a database.
Now, I have to kinds of tasks which are located outside of the rails
app.
- parsing and importing data delivered externaly from locations
configured in the administration

Rails cronjob?
I want to be able to write a script in Ruby which regularly consumes an
XML feed from a fixed source, re-formats it, produces a large file for
web delivery, and updates a database with the contained information.
It''s simple - just running a script from a cron job, and some basic data
manipulation... But I''d prefer to use the Rails database mapping
constructs than roll my

Is there a place for java in Ruby on Rails apps?
Hi all,
I''m asking this question from the standpoint of a developer with almost 10
years experience with Microsoft technologies, mostly doing server side
component and database work. So, I''m not very familiar with the java
world. Can anyon tell me how/if java development can complement Ruby on
Rails development? I''m not interested in how java can duplicate Rails

Mongrel HTTP Library 0.2.0 (Fast And RubyForgified)
Hi Everyone,
I''m happy to announce the 0.2.0 release of Mongrel -- the fastest
HTTP 1.1 library Ruby has yet.
http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/ -- ruby docs lame page.
http://rubyforge.org/projects/mongrel/ -- project page.
Special thanks to Tom Copland for setting up my RubyForge goodness,
and to Why for kicking in time to get the Camping examples up to snuff.

Tunneling in capistrano twice
Hi there,
The default recipe expects you to be able to access your web server
directly from your local machine.
On our web server, for security purposes, it is only possible to ssh
to it through one particular ip (which is also a remote machine.)
The capistrano source is so compact and tidy it looks very hackable.
But rather than messing around I thought I''d ask first if anyone else

Which database to choose for a new Rails application - MySQL 4.1 or 5.0?
Hi
I''m choosing a database for a new Rails application. I pretty much
ruled out PostgreSQL, since despite good reviews of the database
itself, it seems it has countless issues with Rails (for example: in
recent releases migrations don''t work, and unit-tests fail).
So I should now choose between MySQL 4.1, which as I understand enjoys
widespread popularity - perhaps the most

Integrating a wiki (built in rails) into a rails application
Hi everyone,
i wish to know how a wiki ( built in rails ) can be integrated into a
rails application? To be more specific, the users of the rails
application should also be valid users of the wiki and should be able to
create, edit, organize pages in the wiki.
Thanks in advance,

Mongrel 0.3.6 -- Win32 Service/Rails Real Good
Hello Folks,
This release of Mongrel should make the win32 folks go crazy. Thanks to
Luis Lavena it supports a full service system for installing any Rails app
as a service. This lets you start your rails apps from either the command
line or the Service console. Stopping is still a bit problematic but we
hope to have that solved in the next release.
You win32 folks should probably send Luis
