not null constraints added when running rake - is this a "feature?"
After upgrading to Rails 1.1, a lot of my unit tests broke. Turns out
when I run rake test_units and it migrates the test database, it adds
a not null constraint to every column. I don''t have this specified in
my migration, and apparently it works fine with rake migrate if I do
''rake migrate RAILS_ENV=test'', the not null constraints aren''t set.
So why when I

Storing BigDecimal in the db
I need to do some precise math, going to 12-14 decimal places, so I''m
using BigDecimal. How can I store this in a db? I''m using postgresql
8.1.0, if that matters at all. I found a plugin [1] but it gives me
the error "You have a nil object when you didn''t expect it! The error
occurred while evaluating nil.each_pair," with no line number. The
plugin itself

Salted hash login, postgresql, unit tests
Hello,
I have tried to install the salted hash login generator by following the
quick start guide at:
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/SaltedLoginGeneratorQuickstart.
Everything seems to work fine until I try to run the unit tests by doing
''rake test_units'', then I get the following error message:
<error-message>

Which postgresql adapter to use for rails core? How about production?
I wanted to fix some things up in the trunk, so I set up the databases
and ran the unit tests. A bunch fail for postgres, and even more
error out. I know of two postgresql adapters: postgres-pr and
ruby-postgres. Strangely, they each fail different tests. So if I
want to fix things up, which one should I be using? For that matter,
which adapter should I be using for production? Finding out

Debian vs Ubuntu for a postgresql database + rails
I''m going to be getting a VPS at rimuhosting.com, and it''ll only run
postgresql and an app that uses AR/ActionSupport. I always use
FreeBSD, but in this case my options are limited to RHEL4, FC5, Debian
and Ubuntu. I figure Debian and Ubuntu are probably preferable...so
which one should I go with? This will not run an email, ftp, or web
server - just postgresql 8.1 plus a Ruby

Migrations & Unit Testing: Possible Bug in Rails?
I recently started using migrations to create the schema of a Rails
project I am working on. The database I am using for this project is
MySQL. The initial migration creates the table and also includes a
number of execute statements (to do some things like setting primary
keys, autoincrement on some columns and other messy voodoo).
Running "rake migrate" creates the database with no

Converting mysql to postgres
Hi,
Anyone got any cool tricks for converting a Rails site (in this case,
a typo installation) from a mysql database to a postgresql database?
I''ve got it almost working -- I''m doing a SQL dump from mysql and
loading it into postgres. However, mysql does booleans as a tinyint
with 0 = false and 1 = true. When I try to import that into a
postgres database that expects booleans

Any ideas where to find an RPM for CentOS4-1?
Cheers.

migrations questions: MySQL -> postgreSQL
I started my app before migrations were a best practice and have been using SQL scripts. Now I''m looking at potentially having to move from using MySQL to postgreSQL to use a particular hosting provider. I understand migrations are the way to go to make this ''easy'' but it also looks like the use of migrations introduces extra work in other areas. I''d really

index columns in postgres
I am in a holding pattern while client decides upon changes and so I am
working some things out internally so it seems to me that indexing
frequently searched table fields might be useful.
I am using postgres and via postgres, I have added an index to one of my
tables whose index is the same name as the column name. The ''find''
screen I am using this to judge populates a number

rake test_units not loading any fixtures
Hello All,
If I run my unit tests individually using Ruby, they all work correctly.
However, if I try to run them using "rake test_units", I get a bunch of
error messages.
The error messages appear to be caused by rake not loading any of the
fixtures into the test database.
I am using PostgreSQL on Windows.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Bruce.

PostgreSQL, postgres gem, rails2.pdf, http://ruby.scripting.ca/postgres/ confusion...
Hello people...
In the rails2.pdf Dave T says:
Rails works with the DB2, MySQL, Oracle, Postgres,...
The database drivers are all written in C and are primarily distributed in
source form.
Then he lists this site:
http://ruby.scripting.ca/postgres/
Then he says,
There is a pure-Ruby version of the Postgres adapter available. Download
postgres-pr from the Ruby-DBI page at

PostgreSQL
Hi @ all
Does anyone has some experience with PostgreSQL and RoR? Does it gives
any disadvantages or problems with PostgreSQL? I have a webapplication,
that manage (read/write) many records (no. 200''000 records) and I search
a ideal database. Actually, I have two options: - MySQL / - PostgreSQL
And now, I would like to ascertain a good solution...
Thx, ribit

Setting up RoR with Postgresql ---heeellpp!
Hi there, I''ve been trying for a few hours now to get RoR and postgresql
talking - but I''m very confused about what''s going on (I''m running
windows btw).
I haven''t created a database in postgresql (I''m assuming that RoR will
do that?)
my database.yml looks like this:
production:
adapter: ruby-postgres
database: rails_production

Following the directions in:
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2006/04/19/rest-on-rails.html?page=2
I get through the:

With the tables created properly but then when I run the:
rake test:units
I get a failure:

I get the following error when I tri to use DBI
