Performance issue.. after a while
Hello,
I have an project running on a dedicated server:
Debian, P4 CPU 3.00GHz, 1GB RAM,
ruby 1.8.4 (2005-12-24) [x86_64-linux],
rails (1.0.0), activerecord (1.13.2)
lighttpd-1.4.10 + fastcgi + mysql 5.0
7 dispatchers.
The project is a game, so a typical user would visit 100+ pages.
When the server is busiest, it gets 35-40k requests/hour.
For some misterious reason after a number of hours the

How to truly separate Logic from view with Rails?
It is something that I have been wondering. When working with other
application servers there is often/most of the time a 3 tiers/layers
architecture:
- Presentation layer/Web services
- Application layer
- Database layer
They often resides on separate machines, 3 different sets. So the
application code is logically AND physically separated from the
presentation layer.
Is this possible with

Why not mod_ruby?
Hi!
I''ve understood that the mod_ruby apache module is not recommended for
running Ruby on Rails applications. But I haven''t found any information
as to why that is so. Please enlighten me. And could you point me to the
(currently) prefered production environment. (That can handle both RoR
and PHP sites).
Thank you and best regards

Can''t stop/start lighttpd
Hello everyone,
I?ve been working with Ruby on Rails for about 2 months now and have
really enjoyed the ease of use of it. I?m only been doing development
on it so I?ve been using WeBrick. Recently, I have built a server
running Debian Linux, with ruby 1.8.2, rails 1.0.0, lighty 1.4.3, and
Mysql 5.0.18. I used WeBrick to generate a lighttpd.conf file for me, I
changed the paths in the

Difficult process of restarting SCGI, Lighttpd, Apache, sessions
I''ve managed to get Rails working using Apache->Lighttpd->SCGI. Restarting everything is really
difficult. This appears to be the process:
- stop apache
- stop lighttpd
- stop scgi
- make sure scgi still isn''t running (it sometimes does) - if it is, kill it
- delete all session files (they often cause permission errors)
- start scgi
- start apache
- start lighttpd
- cross

Webrick in production?
Would you bother to setup a fastcgi for a "intranet accessible" application
that is like to get < 100 hits a day?

Cluster Design
Hello everyone! My apologies if this appears twice... I had trouble
getting it through earlier.
A collegue and I are beginning development on a site that will
eventually need to very scalable (assuming our business model is a
good idea). My problem is that I''m not a sysadmin guru, and I''m not
terribly comfortable with the design of the hosting platform. We''re

basic ''find'' question
I am struggling to understand the methodology here...
I have a find.rhtml

<%# render :partial => ''form'' %>

mongrel lighttpd and ssl
I am wanting to one run instance of lighttpd, many many instances of
mongrel. I also need ssl but only for one of my sites. I understand that
Mongrel does not play with SSL so I am forced to use Lighttpd. I think that
lighttpd only handles ssl or non-ssl on any given instance. Is there a way
for me to accomplish my goal of one lighttpd with multiple mongrels and the
occasional ssl connection?

lighttpd rails
I''m running lighttpd + fastcgi + rails
Say that the lighttpd root directory is the rails application /public
directory.
I''m just curious.
If theres a file in the document root with the same name as a controller,
does the file get served first?
How does that work? Does lighttpd check the root directory first to see if
the file exists- If not, it calls dispatch.fcgi? I want to

what hardware shuld I but to manage 100k of connections per day?
I''m doing a fotolog for a company.
It''s expected to manage about 100k of connections per day and about 1500
concurrents connections.
What hardware should I buy to manage those numbers of connections?
I''m planning to use slackware + lighttpd + fastcgi, but perhaps we will
have to reuse some scripts in php, in that case I would use slackware +
apache + mod_php + fastcgi

App running fine on Webrick, ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished in lighttpd
My app runs fine on webrick, but I get a
ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished when I try to run it on

$HTTP["host"] =~ "(www\.)?mysite\.com" {

Switchtower Port Issues
Hi there,
I''m having some difficulties finding some decent info on getting
Switchtower to function for my needs. I''ve read most of the
Switchtower doc on http://manuals.rubyonrails.com/read/chapter/97,
however it''s not answering some potent questions I have.
1. The doc mentions, as an example, using an SVN repos at

site takes a while to load after first visit in a while
Using lighttpd + fcgi to power a site. When no one has accessed it in
a while, the first visit to the page takes a while to load up. Then
subsequent visits are fairly fast.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

Performance problem due to ruby or fcgi or mysql?
when i "siege" a particular page on my site, my site just crashed under
a very light load, and cpu usage quickly goes up to 99%. But my other
pages are doing much better with load testing. So my guess initially
was that sql statements with this page is the cause.
However, from "tail -f production.log ", it seems that sql is doing ok
and not taking much time, and

lightpd / fcgi / RoR setup
Hi,
I''m running RoR and have set it up more or less like described in the
wiki (for instance here
http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/LighttpdWithProcessScripts).
I can start the fcgi listener and see that ports 7000-7004 are
listening. I can start lighttpd, and try to connect to the server. I
can restart the default.fcgi listening scripts that i see in "ps ax |

Production deployment
Gang-
We are getting ready to launch our ROR application; the last item
remaining is the deployment platform. For testing, we had used Apache +
MOD_FastCGI. I am not that impressed with it; sometimes it has strange
effects. For example, when we start the application, for about 5 minutes
or so, the app is very unstable and it gets better over time.
My questions is .. should I go with (1)

Mongrel in Production ?
Hi Everyone,
I was setting up Lighty+Fcgi on our server for last *couple* ( read
zillion ) of hours. I had posted my problems in my previous email. But
all in vain..
So, for time being, I switched to Mongrel. And the performance seemed
quite good. This is the first time ever I''m using mongrel ( Awesome
stuff ZedShaw..Thanks! ). I''m wondering if there are many people

ror/lighttpd - HTML files via port 80 become application/octet-stream?
Hi everybody
I am trying to get RoR to work with lighttpd.
Nearly there, but I am stuck with a strange phenomenon.
If I configure lighttpd to serve pages on say port 2000, I can get at my
testapp fine and see the "Welcome aboard" page.
However, if I configure lighttpd to use port 80, I get a download prompt
from my browser.

problems with lighty on linux
I''m trying to get our app running on Lighty... I followed Ezra''s
instructions: http://brainspl.at/pages/rails_stack... Currently the app
runs fine with webrick, but with lighty I get 404 errors on everything.
I found if I don''t edit the lighttpd.conf file to use absolute paths, it
works fine. But this is not good for production because I need to run it
with the -d
