Embedding link_to''s within text fetched from database.
Hi,
I have the following problem that I can''t seem to figure out. I want to
able to fetch some text from my database record in my controller, and then
add two links within the text and then send that back to the view to get
rendered so that the two links appear as links and when clicked on, they''d
basically call the corresponding action for the link. Would anybody know
how to

link_to - Going Back without knowing the action name.
Hi,
I have a bunch of link_to''s in my code that are simple Back buttons that
should basically just go to the previous request. Is there a way of doing
this without specifying the action to execute? The problem is, sometimes I
may render the same view through separate actions so I wouldn''t know which
action to go back to.
Thanks.

Is there a link_to ''external url''?
I''ve checked the Rails documentation but find no mention of link_to
''external url'' or equivalent. Does rails have a built in method to do
this?
thanks

''key not found'' problem with saving model object.
Hello,
I have the following structure:
model foo

:dependent => true
end
model bar

end
In my action, when i try to save foo:
def save

f = foo.new
f.a = 5
begin
b = bar.new
b.a = 10
f.bars << b
rescue Exception => exc

end
f.save! <-- This does not happen

question about strftime when called from partial.
Hi,
I''m calling a helper I''ve written - format_time() that is called from my
views with a given time that was selected from my database and was returned
to the view via an instance variable. When I call format_time from a
partial, I see that I get some kind of String error and the partial won''t
render. Basically, the object being passed in to format_time is already a

send a POST off a link, not a button.
Hi,
Got a question about how the book suggests sending POST requests using a
form whenever one intents to change some database state. So I converted a
bunch of links to forms which ended up creating buttons. I was wondering if
there was a way to keep them links rather than buttons but still use POST in
a form?
thanks.

using :post => ''true'' still makes a GET request
Hi,
In my link_to''s, i''m adding the additional parameter :post => ''true''
whenever I expect to change database state on the server. Problem is, when
I look at the incoming requests, I see that they are all coming in as GET
requests instead of POST requests. Also, the link adds post=true as a name
value parameter in the URL as it would with GET requests. I

session[:return_to] for going back.
Hi,
Is session[:return_to] something Rails maintains to quickly go back to the
previous uri without having to keep track of the action name? Or, do we
have to actually set it in our actions?
Thanks.

safe html links
Hi,
I''m working on a web app that allows users to submit links to external
sites. I''m curious if there are any special security considerations I
should take aside from escaping the user input with h( )? Is it safe to
directly link_to h(user_inputted_url), h(user_inputted_url) or could that be
exploited in a way that I''m not thinking of. Thanks.

Prompting user to enter value to feed Find
Hi,
While viewing part of a long list of records, the user may want to do a
Find of a specific record (for example, find_by_name). The found record
is then displayed using the list view. I''ve searched the wiki and
couldn''t find a sample or information that will help directly in
implementing this function. Any pointers?
Thanks!

Implementing URLs with more than 3 levels in Rails.
Hi There
I started using Rails recently, and I see it''s very easy for URLs that
have up to 3 levels:
/:controller/:action/:id
But what do you do when you need more than 3?
For example, my current project should have an "admin" interface.
Admin has several sub-interfaces, for example a "users" interface. And
the admin/users interface has several actions, e.g.

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knew what ''<some type> expected, got Fixnum''
means? My code looks like the following:

anevent.title = params["event"]["title"]
anevent = session[:user_id]
com = Community.find(params[:id])
com.events << anevent

Hash flattening on paginator link_to
Hey
I need some help with pagination and the link_to in the view.
I''m trying to include a hash in the pagination link_to params and it
keeps flattening out my hash.
Example:
Here''s my hash called @answer:
"answer"=>{"6"=>"9bf31c7ff062936a96d3c8bd1f8f2ff3",
"7"=>"6f4922f45568161a8cdf4ad2299f6d23"}

Using link_to with an image tag & link text
Hi ,
I was trying to use link_to along with image_tag
to setup a link that would open in an external window.
But I was unable to make a link using both text & an image
So my current workaround looks like this inside a partial
where link is http://foo.com & text would be descriptive
<img src="images/arrow.gif" border="0"/> <%= link_to(text, link,

Destructive behavior with link_to, button_to, :post=>true
Hello-
I would like to know what the suggested practice is for having multiple
submit buttons on a relatively complicated input page.
Let''s use the example of a Contact. There is lots of info there,
including name, address, phone number. There is also a list of "contact
associations" which can be modified on the same page.
Ideally, the user could have one

absolute urls in url_for vs. link_to
In both url_for and link_to, the :only_path param can be used to
determine whether the link url used is complete with hostname and path,
or just has the path (a kind of relative url).
However, in url_for it defaults to false (urls with hostnames), and in
link_to it defaults to true ( urls without hostnames, just paths).
Is there any reason for this discrepency? To me, it violates the
principle

scaffold uses link_to for destroy
Hi,
I wonder why scaffolding uses a link_to tag for the destroy links.
Seems like these should be POST requests with button_to. The Rails
book dedicates pages 335-337 to this very issue.
