Stubbing Kernel.` (backquote)
I''m trying to stub(!) the Kernel.` (backquote) method and I''m having
confusing (to me) results. Here''s the method I''m spec''ing:
class Barcode
...
def raw_barcodes
self.make_temporary_copy
`OcrBarcode #{self.temp_file_path}`
end
...
end
And this is my (newbish) attempt at the spec:

replace an expression with its value, or read macros
I know my subject line seems odd, but I want to replace an expression—such as a variable—with its value. For example, I want to paste() some strings together, assign the result to a variable s, then use the value of s as a variable to hold another value. Something like this:
import_subjects <- function (start, iterations) {
for (i in 1:iterations) { # iterate from start to end
s <-

Backquote in R syntax
Hi Folks,
Can someone satisfy my curiosity (well, at least about
the following query!)
Reading the draft proofs of an article I've been asked
to look through, I find the typesetter has set what
would normally be entered as
source("xyz.R") or source('xyz.R')
as
source(`xyz.R')
i.e. it has come out with an opening backquote, then
xyz.R, then a closing forward

Fwd: Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: backquotes and term.labels
Ben,
Looking at your notes, it appears that your solution is to write your own terms() function
for lme.? It is easy to verify that the "varnames.fixed" attribute is not returned by the
ususal terms function.
Then I also need to write my own terms function for the survival and coxme pacakges?
Because of the need to treat strata() terms in a special way I manipulate the

backquotes and term.labels
Thanks to Bill Dunlap for the clarification. On follow-up it turns out that this will be
an issue for many if not most of the routines in the survival package: a lot of them look
at the terms structure and make use of the dimnames of attr(terms, 'factors'), which also
keeps the unneeded backquotes. Others use the term.labels attribute. To dodge this I
will need to create a

A user reported a problem with the survdiff function and the use of variables that contain

I can get only one of the two to work at a time.... by changing

new bquote feature splice does not address a common LISP @ use case?
Dear R-devel,
There is a new feature in R-devel, which explicitly refers to LISP @
operator for splicing.
> The backquote function bquote() has a new argument splice to enable splicing a computed list of values into an expression, like ,@ in LISP's backquote.
Although the most upvoted SO question asking for exactly LISP's @
functionality in R doesn't seems to be addressed by this

using names with functions..
Dear all,
I have the following (rather) strange problem..
For some reasons, I finally work with a variable whose name includes an
R function, "a.log(z)", say. And that is a problem when I call it in a
formula, for instance:
> myname<-"a.log(z)"
> dd<-data.frame("a.log(z)"=1:10,y=rnorm(10))
> o<-lm(y~1,data=dd)

I am looking for a code sample that shows how to execute a host-command
using Ruby or ROR and then read the output.
Thanks,

strange problem with system call
Hi,
I am using backgroundrb to create a automated system of typo blogs. So, users
can create new typo applications using web interface and all that jazz.
Now..its working perfectly except one minor glitch. Since latest version of
typo has a command called "typo", i simply use that command to install new
typo app.And it works.

backquotes/system in Apache f/cgi
I''ve done tons of searching on this so I apologize if this is one of
those common knowledge things. I am relying on Kernel#` and Kernel#system
to run some command line utilities in my Rails app. This worked great until
I moved to Apache (win32). When running FCGI, neither of these methods work
(both return nil). When running CGI, system seems to work, but ` doesn''t.

a question about popen() performance on domU
Dear all,
When I compared the performance of some application on both a Xen domU and a standard linux machine
(where domU runs on a similar physical mahine), I notice the application runs faster on the domU
than on the physical machine. Instrumenting the application code shows the application spends more
time on popen() calls on domU than on the physical machine. I wonder if xenlinux does some

R's parsing of command line arguments using commandArgs()
Hi all,
I am setting up some R program files for use by our DB programmers to
enable them to utilize some R functions which will be called from within
TCL code. R has been installed on an RHEL server and R will process the
results of SQL queries against an Oracle database.
In some cases, they will generate a data file to be read in and
processed by R, in others they will simply make the
