R and databases - a comment
1. That was a part of a private email exchange. It has
been suggested that more people may be interested.
2. I did use various databases (significant part of my
job) for the last 15 years. Some with R for the last 3
years as a hobby. Some comments on the ones used
below. Sorry, no links - I am time-constrained at the
moment - please google if interested in details. The
remarks are from the point

Migrations & Postgres: Change column not functional?
I''ve got a MySQL app, which I''m moving to a new server which is using
Postgres. This seems like the perfect application of migrations. (Note: I
don''t mean "using migrations to switch from MySQL to Postgres" so much as
"Hey, I''ve _been_ using migrations all along, and this is where I cash in".)
There were some odd bugs when working with the

dbHasCompleted() always returns TRUE for POSTGRES Database with RJDBC?
Hello Simon, Hello everyone,
I have a problem with retrieving database-queries chunkwise. In my query
(Postgresql-Database, Postgres-Version 9.1) dbHasCompleted seems to
always return TRUE.
dbGetQuery works for smaller tables, but not for the whole query, since
then a Heap-Overflow-Error will occur (and a Error:
"java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded" when trying to

Postgres, testing and maybe spurious database DROPpings?
Folks,
I don''t like that I have to grant CREATEDB rights to the test user to
get testing working smoothly with Postgres.
What is the philosophical reason that Rails wants to drop and recreate
databases during the testing? It would seem to me that "pg_dump -c" (the
"clean" dump option, similar to mysqldump''s --add-drop-tables ) would
suffice when

How to empty DB in heroku<http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4820549/how-to-empty-db-in-heroku>
I have a Postgres database on Heroku. It is one of the free beta ones.
Locally, when testing, I often run rake db:drop && rake db:create && rake
db:migrate as a way to reset the database.
However, when I try to run this on Heroku, I get the error:\[code\]Couldn''t

PostgreSQL, postgres gem, rails2.pdf, http://ruby.scripting.ca/postgres/ confusion...
Hello people...
In the rails2.pdf Dave T says:
Rails works with the DB2, MySQL, Oracle, Postgres,...
The database drivers are all written in C and are primarily distributed in
source form.
Then he lists this site:
http://ruby.scripting.ca/postgres/
Then he says,
There is a pure-Ruby version of the Postgres adapter available. Download

Limit Number of Postgres Database Connections
I have dovecot running with postgres backend. I am exceeding my maximum
database connections (currently 40) with dovecot 0.99.10.9 and postfix
and was wondering if dovecot has a parameter to limit the total number
of database connections that it will create.

I/O hanging while hosting Postgres database
I'm seeing a condition on FreeBSD 9.1 (built October 24th) where I/O seems to hang on any local zpools after several hours of hosting a large-ish Postgres database. The database occupies about 14TB of a 38TB zpool with a single SSD ZIL. The OS is on a ZFS boot disk. The system also has 24GB of physical memory. Smartmon tools reports no errors on any disks attached to the system, and IPMI

irb(main):002:0> require "postgres"

But then if I specify in my config/database.yml to use

Bus error in ./script/console with postgres (ext. library)
Is there some special magic that needs to be performed so that the
C-based postgres extension library works with the Rails console?
I have installed the postgres extension library (replacing the pure Ruby
version: postgres-pr) from <http://ruby.scripting.ca/postgres/>
Everything works great from WEBrick, but as soon as I fire up the
console and try to use it, I get a bus error:
