Form validation and processing w/o model (no Db/ActiveRecord)
All -
Trying not to fight rails on this, basically have a form and all the same as
would be with an ActiveRecord model except that there is no table. I started
out using this article:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/315850/rails-model-without-database
...which is kind of a hack by inheriting ActiveRecord in to non-AR model but
am running into some problems and just have the feeling that I am

Validate your forms with a table-less model
Ive followed this example of how to validate a form with a tableless
model:
http://rails.techno-weenie.net/tip/2005/11/19/validate_your_forms_with_a_table_less_model
Ive got this example working but when validation fails the failed boxes
are not highlighted in red. At the moment i have a contact details form
and want to validate the information entered by the user but this will

Proxies
I really like the idea of Mock Proxies as explained in Brian Takita''s post here:
http://pivots.pivotallabs.com/users/brian/blog/articles/352-introducing-rr
I posted to this list eariler with an incomplete implementation of
.stops_mocking in the thread "Mocking Time, delegating to original
object." The Mock Proxy pattern would make this simpler.

How to customize the default scaffold?
I know the scaffold generator is really only useful for beginners
and/or very the preliminary state of a project, but I find that I use
it a lot (especially, since I am still a beginner). There are a
couple of things I find myself tweaking (or wanting to tweak, but
never getting around to tweaking) each time I generate a new scaffold:
1) Change the layout from blah.html.erb to

rails on Oracle 10g - missing controller ?
I am trying to generate my first scaffold but I am getting a 500 error
from http://127.0.0.1:3000/foo . Below is the information about my
system, as well as the commands I am typing. I have also included the DDL
( Oracle 10g ). I am mid way through chapter 6 of "Agile Web Development
w/ Rails". Why aren''t there any files under app/controllers/ ?

Are migrations executed within a transaction?
Hi all,
Can I safely assume that each migration is excuted within a
transaction, so that''s it''s safe to have migrations executing failing
statements?
Thanks,

Application Design
Hi Railsers,
How do you design your applications? Do you start coding HTML? Start
with the controllers/models? Start in a program like
photoshop/gimp/illustrator/inkscape?
I start in inkscape, it''s a SVG editor. I sketch all the views of my
application, and then I create the views that belong to one controller
in RHTML. After that, I do the models/controller, and move on to the

Scaffolding to use has_many and belongs_to ?
What does everyone on this list think about enhancing scaffolding
somehow so that a "has_many" relationship will automatically drop the
<select> box into the view to reference the "belongs_to" part of the
view?
I think scaffolding is great but I am always adding the <select> boxes
to reference the parent association. Do you think this would be
useful? just a

Lookup tables and scaffolding
It occurs to me as a missing feature that there''s no way to indicate a lookup
table relationship (as opposed to other sorts of foreign key relationships)
in Rails and that the scaffolding generator could recognise this lookup and
render a drop-down list automagically for the lookup table.
Say you have an Address and a State, and the State is a lookup table. In
addresses you have

NameError: uninitialized constant Addres
I created some scaffolding for an Address model and an Addresses controller.
When running the functional tests for the addresses controller, I get
this exception: "NameError: uninitialized constant Addres"
The exception seems to start from this function:
def list
@address_pages, @addresses = paginate :address, :per_page => 10
end

Maintaining DB reflection without scaffolding
Hi,
I would like to know if there is a way to maintain database reflection
for the ''new'' and ''edit'' views whilst removing scaffolding?
I''m trying to create a webapp that will be somewhat maintainable by
colleagues (that aren''t necessarily web developers) through simple
manipulation of db table fields.
For example to add another field to the

combining two models in one controller/view "set"
I''m going to take another stab at this question (my first one received
no replies):
I have two models:
Author
has_many: books
Book
has_one: author
I have two tables:
authors
id
...
books
id
author_id
...
I let the scaffolding fly and it created the CRUD goodness for each
model, as expected.
However, I want to have only one view/controller "set" for both
models; when I

Tableless ActiveRecord attribute and my aching head
I beat my head against a wall for almost 2 hours with this issue.
My first problem was easily solved. I wanted a class that could use
ActiveRecord''s validation capabilities but without using a table behind
it (I would be persisting setup information in the session, but the
initial setup parameters come from a user input form)
No problem...found this link which got me up and running

Scaffolding plugins that support relationships. . .?
Hi All,
I''m looking for a quality scaffolding plugin. So far I''ve discovered
DryScaffolding and Streamlined. DryScaffolding doesn''t truly support
Rails 1.2.2 so I dropped that. Streamlined works, but is full of
quirks (e.g. many-to-many relationships not cascade updating
correctly, etc). Can anyone suggest a quality scaffolding plugin/
generator/framework that

easy scaffold question(s)
I''m doing very well with the Hibbs Rolling on Rails tutorial. I have an
easy question for my personal notes. I''m coming up with a simple framework
of steps for creating a basic database. It includes the following maxims to
make original app creation easy:
app_name = MySQL database name
SQL_tablename = model_name
model_name = controller-name
Is this going to work for getting

small question about the relevance of the "database schema has changed"
I have developed 3 small applications using rails (nothing production
worthy, just some small stuff "prototype" style). And I often end up
changing my database scheme in the middle of development. I also use
"script/generate scaffold" (this is somehow relevant to my question).
Whenever I change my database schema I end up having to regenerate the
scaffold. In the past this

Problems Generating Scaffolding
I am having trouble generating some of my scaffolding. I''m trying to
use PostgreSQL as my back-end. Some of my scaffolding generates with
no problem but for other parts I get this:
Before updating scaffolding from new DB schema, try creating a table
for your model
The tables do exist. At least I can see them from psql.
Here is the SQL I''m using to create my tables:

newbie scaffold question
I''ve got a database with several tables. I''d like to create scaffolding
for separate CRUD interfaces for several of these tables. I''m hoping
that the scaffold generator can create the CRUD code for all these
tables in ONE controller, but I don''t know how to tell it to do that, if
it can.
Can anyone verify if this is possible?
Thanks,
David

UML
In Rolling with Ruby on Rails tutorial -
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails.html - I saw that to
introduce a new element to my domain, I needed to define it in a table,
generate a model element with a similar name and the class would
autoamtically take the attributes from the table definition. Is it
possible to do this in the other direction... i.e to take the class
