some notes about rails, apache, fastcgi and windows
hello.
i''d like to share some feelings of mine after a couple of *weeks*
intermittent attempts to have rails applications working on windows
(XP) with fastcgi performances under apache (2.0).
i''d say the software stack i''m using now will be fairly common as more
and more new rails developers will join the bandwagon.

There is a big difference if you are not running a pure rails site. I am doing auth apache-side because I serve static content, perl scripts via cgi and feed the mongrel pack from Apache.
The REMOTE_USER variable value can be passed to rails using a technique described deep down in one of the informative pieces on the Mongrel website.

Apache, proxypass and REMOTE_USER
Hello, still trying to get things going.
With proxypass the REMOTE_USER variable set by mod_auth_* is not passed to
mongrel. I found another admin that has the same problem[1], but no solution.
Did someone here solve this problem?

Mystified by ActiveRecord.serialize
I''m either missing a step, confused or seeing some odd behavior with
ActiveRecord''s serialize feature. When I load an ActiveRecord object
from the database, my serialized attribute is a YAML::Object, not the
original object. My code is based on an example of this capability in
the "Agile Web Dev. w/ Rails" book (p. 196).

Help with installing Apache Solr with Dovecot 2.2
Dear Marc,
Thanks for your feedback!
1. I store it in MySQL.
2. I will add a cronjob to run Solr if I can figure out why its not working
on test runs. Maybe I might try to setup a cronjob for solr to avoid having
to manually start it everytime.
3. Will turn on the mail_debug in dovecot.conf . Where will it log the
problems?

Rails on Mongrel
Hi,
After following advice from you good folks, I gave mongrel a try in a
cluster design based on the example on the Mongrel website - and it
worked right out of the box which is great - and it''s very fast :)
I have got a bit stuck though. I have two MS Word files in
/public/files/. I can pull back these files no problem but it isn''t

Lighttpd for rails app subdomain apache for the rest
I want to host a rails app at mydomain.com/railsapp. For technical
reasons I have to leave mydomain.com on apache. This means that I need
to tell apache to proxy only requests for mydomain.com/railsapp to
lighttpd. I have deployed in a situation like this before around a year

I have following data in a data.csv file separated by space

lighttpd and Apache .. will they play together?
Can someone point me to a tutorial or web example of doing this ...
I want to have a site that is normally pure content served via Apache and I
want to set up a Rails app on the same box that is served via lighttpd. Now
I want the Apache site to be able to retrieve formatted pages for MySQL
database queries by the Rails app. I will also be using ActionMailer under

File Upload Problems With Apache and Lighttpd But Not Webrick...
I am having trouble uploading files through a form when using Apache
(production) or Lighttpd (development). The odd thing is that when I force
script/server to load Webrick, the upload works just fine on the same
code-base.
When it fails, the upload just sits there forever. Some browsers eventually
return an error code, others spin for a long time... Anyway, it never
recovers.

I have been playing with some of the tutorials and one of them had me
install lighttpd and lighttpd-fastcgi and that was much faster than
apache seems to be.
How do I get fastcgi stuff to work on apache...

Appache index error on CentOS-6,4
I am getting this error when trying to access a virtual website index
by ip address and port on a host that has SELinux disabled (another

Recommend server for developing RoR on win
Hi all,
can you recommend me which web server config to use for developing rails
on windows machine. I tried webrick, which is good but it''s annoying
because console window is in taskbar for every site running and it have
to be started manually. Apache with CGI is to slow and using FastCGI on
the other side brings me lot of problems, like randomly not working RoR
sites.

Run fastcgi in Apache 1.3, or proxy through lighttpd?
I''m working with a guy who has Apache 1.3 installed on his server, and
it''s not an option to simply use lighttpd for a Rails application I''m
helping him with. I''ve seen that Apache 2 apparently is crappy when
it comes to fastcgi, but 1.3 isn''t so bad. I can then either just run

Difficult process of restarting SCGI, Lighttpd, Apache, sessions
I''ve managed to get Rails working using Apache->Lighttpd->SCGI. Restarting everything is really
difficult. This appears to be the process:
- stop apache
- stop lighttpd
- stop scgi
- make sure scgi still isn''t running (it sometimes does) - if it is, kill it
- delete all session files (they often cause permission errors)
- start scgi
- start apache
- start lighttpd
- cross

Mongrel/Apache mod_deflate question

We''re moving from a single lighttpd-hosted Rails box to a Apache/
mongrel cluster.
In lighttpd, mod_compress had a very nice feature:
if there''s a static file, it would compress it in a user-specified
compress folder. If the file hasn''t changed, it would just serve out
the compress file; if the file has changed, it would recompress it
and serve it out.
