weird bug with Seagate 3TB USB3 drive
Banging my head against a Seagate 3TB USB3 drive. Its marketing name is: Seagate Expansion 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STAY3000102 format(1M) shows it identify itself as: Seagate-External-SG11-2.73TB Under both Solaris 10 and Solaris 11x, I receive the evil message: | I/O request is not aligned with 4096 disk sector size. | It is handled through Read Modify Write but the performance

Question on 4k sectors
Hi. Is the problem with ZFS supporting 4k sectors or is the problem mixing 512 byte and 4k sector disks in one pool, or something else? I have seen alot of discussion on the 4k issue but I haven''t understood what the actual problem ZFS has with 4k sectors is. It''s getting harder and harder to find large disks with 512 byte sectors so what should we do? TIA...

Migrating zpool to new drives with 4K Sectors
Hi ZFS Discuss, I have a 8x 1TB RAIDZ running on Samsung 1TB 5400rpm drives with 512b sectors. I will be replacing all of these with 8x Western Digital 2TB drives with support for 4K sectors. The replacement plan will be to swap out each of the 8 drives until all are replaced and the new size (~16TB) is available with a `zfs scrub`. My question is, how do I do this and also factor in the new

Bad SWAP performance from zvol
I''ve upgraded my system from ufs to zfs (root pool). By default, it creates a zvol for dump and swap. It''s a 4GB Ultra-45 and every late night/morning I run a job which takes around 2GB of memory. With a zvol swap, the system becomes unusable and the Sun Ray client often goes into "26B". So I removed the zvol swap and now I have a standard swap partition. The

ashift and vdevs
zdb -C shows an shift value on each vdev in my pool, I was just wondering if it is vdev specific, or pool wide. Google didn''t seem to know. I''m considering a mixed pool with some "advanced format" (4KB sector) drives, and some normal 512B sector drives, and was wondering if the ashift can be set per vdev, or only per pool. Theoretically, this would save me some size on

cannot replace X with Y: devices have different sector alignment
Well this is a new one.... Illumos/Openindiana let me add a device as a hot spare that evidently has a different sector alignment than all of the other drives in the array. So now I''m at the point that I /need/ a hot spare and it doesn''t look like I have it. And, worse, the other spares I have are all the same model as said hot spare. Is there anything I can do with this or

zfs reports small st_size for directories?
Why does ZFS report such small directory sizes? For example, take a maildir directory with ten entries: total 2385 drwx------ 8 17121 vmail 10 Jun 8 23:50 . drwx--x--x 14 root root 14 May 12 2006 .. drwx------ 5 17121 vmail 5 May 25 18:16 .Trash drwx------ 5 17121 staff 6 Jun 9 00:01 .testing -rw------- 1 17121 staff 0 Jun

Upgrading from a single disk.
Suppose I have a single ZFS pool on a single disk; I want to upgrade the system to use two different, larger disks and I want to mirror. Can I do something like: - I start with disk #0 - add mirror on disk #1 (resilver) - replace first disk (#0) with disk #2 (resilver) Casper

Recommendation for home NAS external JBOD
Hi, my oi151 based home NAS is approaching a frightening "drive space" level. Right now the data volume is a 4*1TB Raid-Z1, 3 1/2" local disks individually connected to an 8 port LSI 6Gbit controller. So I can either exchange the disks one by one with autoexpand, use 2-4 TB disks and be happy. This was my original approach. However I am totally unclear about the 512b vs 4Kb issue.

Writting 0s
Hello zfs-discuss, When compression is set to on for a givef file system, then if block contains only 0s "nothing" is writen. I wonder if it would be beneficial if ZFS behaves that way not only for block which are going to be compressed but for all block regardless of compression. Or perhaps making this simple check would too much impact CPU for normal data? ? --

brtfs on Solaris? (Re: [osol-discuss] [indiana-discuss] So when are we gonna fork this sucker?)
brtfs could be supported on Opensolaris, too. IMO it could even complement ZFS and spawn some concurrent development between both. ZFS is too high end and works very poorly with less than 2GB while brtfs reportedly works well with 128MB on ARM. Norco''s new storage appliance
Hey all, Has anyone else noticed Norco''s recently-announced DS-520 and thought ZFS-ish thoughts? It''s a five-SATA, Celeron-based desktop NAS that ships without an OS. http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=8&modelno=ds-520 What practical impact is a 32-bit processor going to have on a ZFS system? (I know this relies on speculation, but) Might anyone know

Need Help Invalidating Uberblock
I have a ZFS pool that has been corrupted. The pool contains a single device which was actually a file on UFS. The machine was accidentally halted and now the pool is corrupt. There are (of course) no backups and I''ve been asked to recover the pool. The system panics when trying to do anything with the pool. root@:/$ zpool status panic[cpu1]/thread=fffffe8000758c80: assertion failed:

4k sector support in Solaris 11?
If I want to use a batch of new Seagate 3TB Barracudas with Solaris 11, will zpool let me create a new pool with ashift=12 out of the box or will I need to play around with a patched zpool binary (or the iSCSI loopback)? -- Dave Pooser Manager of Information Services Alford Media http://www.alfordmedia.com

Failing WD desktop drive in mirror, how to identify?
I have a desktop system with 2 ZFS mirrors. One drive in one mirror is starting to produce read errors and slowing things down dramatically. I detached it and the system is running fine. I can''t tell which drive it is though! The error message and format command let me know which pair the bad drive is in, but I don''t know how to get any more info than that like the serial number

Fwd: Re: zvol space consumption vs ashift, metadata packing
Hello, Daniel, Apparently your data is represented by rather small files (thus many small data blocks), so proportion of metadata is relatively high, and your<4k blocks are now using at least 4k disk space. For data with small blocks (a 4k volume on an ashift=12 pool) I saw metadata use up most of my drive - becoming equal to data size. Just for the sake of completeness, I brought up a

If you have any reservations, please wait for Sun to release something official, and don''t blame me if your data is gone. Supporting ~10K users on ZFS
OK, I know that there''s been some discussion on this before, but I''m not sure that any specific advice came out of it. What would the advice be for supporting a largish number of users (10,000 say) on a system that supports ZFS? We currently use vxfs and assign a user quota, and backups are done via Legato Networker. >From what little I currently understand, the general
