I''m new to Rails and am modifying the ToDo tutorial app into something else. I have successfully installed authentication via login_generator and now I working toward restricting access to certain database records based on the login name. I realize that eventually, I''ll want to use the "id" field, but for now, I just want to use the user name itself. I have

Global Method Declaration?
Is there a place where I can put a method that can be accessed in both views and controllers? Here''s the situation, maybe someone can suggest a better way to go about this: I created my own custom login system with email verification and user roles (basically, I tinkered around with SaltedHashLoginGenerator until I finally gave up and wrote my own). One role, of course, is an admin

using login_generator and the Cookbook tutorial
Hi All, I''ve been fooling around with the login_generator and the rolling with ruby on rails demo, but I''m jiggered if I can get the two to work together. I''ve managed to get everything installed ok, and have created the db and tables, etc. I''ve been using ruby script\generate login Recipe, and I can either the get the basic tutorial to work, or get the

Sessions or lookups?
My application needs to know if a user is an administrator, for security and aesthetic reasons. At the moment, I store true/false in the session by doing the following at login: session[:user_is_admin] = authenticated_user.is_admin? Is this OK to do? Or should I really be doing the following every time: User.find(session[:user_id]).is_admin? (user_id is always in the session too) Is there

Login controller additions
I have added roles and roles_users table and updated the model so that my users can have multiple roles. ("Admin" role does always have id = 1). I have added these methods to my application controller. <code> helper_method :is_admin? helper_method :is_user? def is_admin? if @session[''user''] @session[''user''].roles.find(1)

[login_generator] implementing login limits
I have a simple Rails app that I am close to deploying on our intranet. The security model is "either you are an admin or your are not," with the method of implementing this model being done by the login_generator 1.1.0. There is one account set up, ''admin'', with three of us having the ability to logon with this username (i.e. we know the password). I am looking to

Multivariate multiple regression
I'd like to model the relationship between m responses Y1, ..., Ym and a single set of predictor variables X1, ..., Xr. Each response is assumed to follow its own regression model, and the error terms in each model can be correlated. My understanding is that although lm() handles vector Y's on the left-hand side of the model formula, it really just fits m separate lm models. What should

Sorting by an attribute on a associated table
So, I have a User has_many :profiles. The most recently dated profile is considered the current one. I need to sort these users by name, but the name attribute is a member of the associated table. Is there any easy way to do this other than with some ugly find_by_sql? Maybe a more general question - is there a common solution to sorting in Ruby? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

how best to implement lookup table?
Hi all - I''d like to implement a lookup table in my app that contains some reference data, just some status codes and their descriptions. What''s the most appropriate approach according to the "rails way" of doing things? Would I just implement a has_many relationship? Let''s say these are Order status codes, would the StatusCode have many Orders? This
