jbod questions
Folks,
We are in the process of purchasing new san/s that our mail server
runs on (JES3). We have moved our mailstores to zfs and continue to
have checksum errors -- they are corrected but this improves on the
ufs inode errors that require system shutdown and fsck.
So, I am recommending that we buy small jbods, do raidz2 and let zfs
handle the raiding of these boxes. As we need more

ZFS with Equallogic storage
I''m planning on setting up an NFS server for our ESXi hosts and plan on using a virtualized Solaris or Nexenta host to serve ZFS over NFS.
The storage I have available is provided by Equallogic boxes over 10Gbe iSCSI.
I am trying to figure out the best way to provide both performance and resiliency given the Equallogic provides the redundancy.
Since I am hoping to provide a 2TB

Hardware RAID vs. ZFS RAID
Hello,
I have a Dell 2950 with a Perc 5/i, two 300GB 15K SAS drives in a RAID0 array. I am considering going to ZFS and I would like to get some feedback about which situation would yield the highest performance: using the Perc 5/i to provide a hardware RAID0 that is presented as a single volume to OpenSolaris, or using the drives separately and creating the RAID0 with OpenSolaris and ZFS? Or

Configuring a 3510 for ZFS
Hi folks,
Myself and a colleague are currently involved in a prototyping exercise
to evaluate ZFS against our current filesystem. We are looking at the
best way to arrange the disks in a 3510 storage array.
We have been testing with the 12 disks on the 3510 exported as "nraid"
logical devices. We then configured a single ZFS pool on top of this,
using two raid-z arrays. We are getting

Rule of Thumb for zfs server sizing with (192) 500 GB SATA disks?
I''m trying to get maybe 200 MB/sec over NFS for large movie files (need large capacity to hold all of them). Are there any rules of thumb on how much RAM is needed to handle this (probably RAIDZ for all the disks) with zfs, and how large a server should be used? The throughput required is not so large, so I am thinking an X4100 M2 or X4150 should be plenty.

7110 questions
Hi all,
(down to the wire here on EDU grant pricing :)
i''m looking at buying a pair of 7110''s in the EDU grant sale.
The price is sure right. I''d use them in a mirrored, cold-failover
config.
I''d primarily be using them to serve a vmware cluster; the current config
is two standalone ESX servers with local storage, 450G of SAS RAID10 each.
the 7110 price

Dedicated server running ESXi with no RAID card, ZFS for storage?
Morning all...
I have a Dedicated server in a data center in Germany, and it has 2 3TB
drives, but only software RAID. I have got them to install VMWare ESXi and
so far everything is going ok... I have the 2 drives as standard data
stores...
But i am paranoid... So, i installed Nexenta as a VM, gave it a small disk
to boot off and 2 1Tb disks on separate physical drives... I have created a

Re: Difference between ZFS and UFS with one LUN froma SAN
This may not be the answer you''re looking for, but I don''t know if it''s
something you''ve thought of. If you''re pulling a LUN from an expensive
array, with multiple HBA''s in the system, why not run mpxio? If you ARE
running mpxio, there shouldn''t be an issue with a path dropping. I have
the setup above in my test lab and pull cables

Does ZFS work with SAN-attached devices?
Hi All,
Its been a while since I touched zfs. Is the below still the case with zfs and hardware raid array? Do we still need to provide two luns from the hardware raid then zfs mirror those two luns?

Thanks,

Mirror of SAN Boxes with ZFS ? (split site mirror)
Hello,
I''m thinking about a setup that looks like this:
- 2 headnodes with FC connectivity (OpenSolaris)
- 2 backend FC srtorages (Disk Shelves with RAID Controllers presenting a huge 15 TB RAID5)
- 2 datacenters (distance 1 km with dark fibre)
- one headnode and one storage in each data center
(Sorry for this ascii art :)

ZFS Usage in Warehousing (lengthy intro)
Dear all,
we''re currently looking forward to restructure our hardware environment for
our datawarehousing product/suite/solution/whatever.
We''re currently running the database side on various SF V440''s attached via
dual FC to our SAN backend (EMC DMX3) with UFS. The storage system is
(obviously in a SAN) shared between many systems. Performance is mediocre

xVM Ready for serious use ?
I currently have 2 x ESXi boxes that have VMs stored on a NFS/iSCSI debian lenny linux box. I had purchased a new whitebox server as an intended replacement for the linux box. I had always planned on installing opensolaris on the new hardware with this config;
2 x 640GB mirrored rpool
6 x 1TB in raidz2
This box was going to be built in parallel with the current server and I would have simply

I.O error: zpool metadata corrupted after powercut
Last 2 weeks we had 2 zpools corrupted.
Pool was visible via zpool import, but could not be imported anymore. During import attempt we got I/O error,
After a first powercut we lost our jumpstart/nfsroot zpool (another pool was still OK). Luckaly jumpstart data was backed up and easely restored, nfsroot Filesystems where not but those where just test machines. We thought the metadata corruption

Difference between ZFS and UFS with one LUN from a SAN
All,
I understand that ZFS gives you more error correction when using two LUNS from a SAN. But, does it provide you with less features than UFS does on one LUN from a SAN (i.e is it less stable).
Thanks,
Shawn

Proposal: ZFS Hot Spare support
As mentioned last night, we''ve been reviewing a proposal for hot spare
support in ZFS. Below you can find a current draft of the proposed
interfaces. This has not yet been submitted for ARC review, but
comments are welcome. Note that this does not include any enhanced FMA
diagnosis to determine when a device is "faulted". This will come in a
follow-on project, of which some

ZFS on top of ZFS iSCSI share
I have a filer running Opensolaris (snv_111b) and I am presenting a
iSCSI share from a RAIDZ pool. I want to run ZFS on the share at the
client. Is it necessary to create a mirror or use ditto blocks at the
client to ensure ZFS can recover if it detects a failure at the client?
Thanks,
Bruin

zfs, raidz, spare and jbod
Hi.
I installed solaris express developer edition (b79) on a supermicro
quad-core harpertown E5405 with 8 GB ram and two internal sata-drives.
I installed solaris onto one of the internal drives. I added an areca
arc-1680 sas-controller and configured it in jbod-mode. I attached an
external sas-cabinet with 16 sas-drives 1 TB (931 binary GB). I
created a raidz2-pool with ten disks and one spare.

compression=on and zpool attach
I''ve got 12Gb or so of db+web in a zone on a ZFS filesystem on a mirrored zpool.
Noticed during some performance testing today that its i/o bound but
using hardly
any CPU, so I thought turning on compression would be a quick win.
I know I''ll have to copy files for existing data to be compressed, so
I was going to
make a new filesystem, enable compression and rysnc everything in,

ZFS for ISCSI ntfs backing store.
I''m looking to move our file storage from Windows to Opensolaris/zfs. The windows box will be connected through 10g for iscsi to the storage. The windows box will continue to serve the windows clients and will be hosting approximately 4TB of data.
The physical box is a sunfire x4240, single AMD 2435 processor, 16G ram, LSI 3801E HBA, ixgbe 10g card.

HELP! SNV_97,98,99 zfs with iscsitadm and VMWare!
I''m not sure if this is a problem with the iscsitarget or zfs. I''d greatly appreciate it if it gets moved to the proper list.
Well I''m just about out of ideas on what might be wrong..
Quick history:
I installed OS 2008.05 when it was SNV_86 to try out ZFS with VMWare. Found out that multilun''s were being treated as multipaths so waited till SNV_94 came out to
