Ruby LDAP
Anyone has done work with Ruby-Ldap? and maybe could provide some examples? I have to admit that I am rather lost using this. I am looking to do a Rails interface to manage LDAP servers but I can''t seem to find how to do this in Ruby and for example retrieve the elements, attributes, and change them. This is what I have done so far.... --- #!/appl/ruby/bin/ruby -w require

Rails Cluster Design
Hello everyone! A collegue and I are beginning development on a site that will eventually need to very scalable (assuming our business model is a good idea). My problem is that I''m not a sysadmin guru, and I''m not terribly comfortable with the design of the hosting platform. We''re going to start with two servers initially (for cost reasons), and I''m considering

MogileFS handler
Hello, I''ve been using NFS for sharing files across a cluster of servers but I''ve had a lot of problems with that. I''m planning to move to MogileFS which seems to be more stable and more adapted to this usage (lots of user uploaded files). I wonder if someone has already worked on an integration of MogileFS into Mongrel (and Rails app) for serving the files ? If not, I

puppet for deployment of Java apps
Hello, Is Puppet a good choice to deploy JAVA applications (Tomcat) where there exists a cross-system dependency (i.e. the database should be deployed before the web app)? If not, any suggestions for alternatives? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Puppet Users" group. Testing sharding on tiered volume
Hi, I'm looking to use sharding on tiered volume. This is very attractive feature that could benefit tiered volume to let it handle larger files without hitting the "out of (hot)space problem". I decided to set test configuration on GlusterFS 3.12.3 when tiered volume has 2TB cold and 1GB hot segments. Shard size is set to be 16MB. For testing 100GB files are used. It seems writes

Tiering Volumns
Hello everyone. I have a new GlusterFS setup with 3 servers and 2 volumes. The "HotTier" volume uses Nvme and the "ColdTier" volume uses HDD's. How do I specify the tiers for each volume? I will be adding 2 more HDDs to each server. I would then like to change from a Replicate to Distributed-Replicated. Not sure if that makes a difference in the tiering setup. [root at

Hosting images : DB or File System
Hi, I''m developing an application where I''ll have to store a lot of images coming from the users. And I''m still not sure if I should store them in MySQl as blob or just store them on filesystem. If I store them on filesystem, how to scale when I''ll have to have multiple servers ? Thanks, Pratik -- rm -rf / 2>/dev/null - http://null.in

Mail server setup for small ISP
Hi, I will probably have to design an e-mail (and other components) infrastructure for a small ISP soon (WISP). I'm doing some research to determine which components would be best to offer e-mail services to their client and allow the staff to manage accounts easily. I usually use virtual machines a lot for isolation and easy backups and migration (when a hardware node is

Three-tier
Hi Everyone, I''m working at getting Rails introduced in my company. We''re a J2EE shop. Our deployments make use of thee-tiered architecture, just to be clear, that means that there are essentially three machines involved in dealing out an app: a webserver, an application server, and a database server. As I see it (unless I''ve missed something) Ruby is essentially

High Latency With Tiered Queues
Hello, I''m trying to setup what I thought would be a fairly basic tiered shaping system. I have a 6mbit (768kbps) link coming into my eth1 device, with my LAN IPs on the eth0 device. I want to limit outgoing traffic so that certain IPs are limited to 400kbps, with 3 classes under that 400k so certain machines get prioritized (main servers in 1:21, other servers in 1:22, workstations

Handling a tiered subscription service
Hi all, I''m working on a project that involves a tiered pricing structure for various features, all of which are accessed via a secure admin area. The features available in each tier, the tier structure and pricing will change over time, so new tier schemes will come into play, requiring feature/pricing schemes to be timestamped. I guess what I''m aiming for is

versioning of win32 versus ruby gems
I know we already mentioned this before on the list but I couldn''t find it in the archives. Is there a way to differentiate the versions for ruby/mswin32 so that I could run a command like: # sudo gem install mongrel --source=http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/releases/ --include-dependencies --version 1.0 and have it not prompt me like this: Select which gem to install for your platform

Applicationwide BusinessObject/Hash
Hello, I''m a total newbie, so please forgive my ignorance. I am trying to port an application from java to ruby. In order to do that, I need to put the object containing all the business logic into something like application scope. The nicest solution would be just to have an application wide hash, where I can put all kinds in of objects. Where and how would I instantiate such an

Best Approach to a ''Down for Maintenance'' Page?
What is the best way to implement a ''Down for Maintenance'' page across your Rails app? Ideally I would like to have a button in my admin section that toggles the display of a ''currently under maintenance'' page to every public request to the app (possibly with some dynamic content like estimated down-time) except for: - - requests from a specified IP
