External SATA enclosures: SiI3124 and CentOS 5?
Tired of "little problems" trying to keep 7 drives working in an old desktop
computer, I'm considering an external SATA drive enclosure with a controller
card based on the Sil3124.
http://www.ipcdirect.net/servlet/Detail?no=152
I'm a bit concerned about long-term support, namely that the company's driver
page only lists drivers through RedHat 4.

HW experience
Hi,
we would like to establish a small Lustre instance and for the OST
planning to use standard Dell PE1950 servers (2x QuadCore + 16 GB Ram) and
for the disk a JBOD (MD1000) steered by the PE1950 internal Raid controller
(Raid-6). Any experience (good or bad) with such a config ?
thanxs,

Mapping sas address to physical disk in enclosure
Hi, we have SunFire X4140 connected to Dell MD1220 SAS enclosure,
single path, MPxIO disabled, via LSI SAS9200-8e HBA. Disks are visible
with sas-addresses such as this in "zpool status" output:

Cheap Array Enclosure for ZFS pool?
We have 14 500GB PATA drives left over from another project. Given that ZFS seems to prefer working with jbod''s, does anyone know of an inexpensive enclosure with an fcal interface to host the disks?

eSATA drive enclosure of a full PC?
HI All,
I have a dilemma and I would appreciate advice
1. Get a good size case, mobo, processor, etc and put 8 hard drives it in and RAID them. (yes an 8 port SATA mobo). Running CentOS.
or
2. Get an eSATA enclosure that has room for 8 or 10 drives and just connect it to box?
I know that RAID is not a full proof backup, but I am looking for a solution to store all of my data, projects, music,

Locally attached disk is seen, 40 gig PATA in USB enclosure is not.
Hi Folks,
When I boot ISOLinux, the locally attached disk is visible but the PATA
40 Gig in a USB attached enclosure is not. The locally attached disk
has no bearing on what I am doing and to avoid confusion will not be
mentioned again. Everything is happening on the 40 Gig.
Let me explain.
The goal is: Copy an installation iso to the disk, boot the disk and
install it on that disk. I have

External SATA drive enclosures + ZFS?
Hi all,
Space is starting to get a bit tight here, so I''m looking at adding
a couple of TB to my home server. I''m considering external USB or
FireWire attached drive enclosures. Cost is a real issue, but I also
want the data to be managed by ZFS--so enclosures without a JBOD option
have been disgarded (i.e., I don''t want to use any internal HW RAID
controllers).

My firmware seems to be more up to date. Anyway, I will try to update
firmware. I have to check how to do that.

Will this work? server+centOS5+100users?
I am an experienced MS administrator of W2003 servers & Exchange systems.
I have 5+ years UNIX mid-level experience but not in centOS. Grounded in SCO UNIX (the real SCO UNIX).
We want to use CentOS on a recently grave yarded Dell poweredge 400SC server.
This is a P4 3.0 Ghz, w/4GB memory, 2 SATA 250 GB disks.
We want to use this server w/CentOS5, to provide file and print resources to 100

Message to Pietenpol-List Contained An Enclosure...
Hello,
The message you posted to the List below contained file enclosure data and
consequently was not posted to the List. You will notice that the enclosure
is quite large and contains data that many mailer programs can't use. This
enclosure also adds far too much 'useless' data to the already huge archive
file. If you wish to share files such as photos of your project with the

USB2.0/Firewire Enclosure
I (work :) bought a USB2.0/Firewire enclosure and I had a little trouble with
it until I came across this page
http://people.freebsd.org/~maho/USB/comment/ku350a.txt after trying the
sysctl things work well.
I haven't tried the USB2.0 side of it, as I don't have any USB2.0 controllers.
The Firewire bit works great too (quite a bit faster than USB1 :)
The enclosure in question is made

When cost is supreme, then just a Escalade 7006-2 or 8006-2 with
(2) [P]ATA or [S]ATA drives is what you want. It only adds ~$125
to system cost.

multipath recipe for an enclosure ?
hi guys,
In hope that some experts roam around I post this one question - how do
you multipath disks(all disks) that sit in one specific SAS enclosure?
Blacklist everything else.
And I'm hoping for something like "globing", so you do not want to go
through it on by single disk/wwin basis.
some experts?(or maybe even not, it could be that I do not get it)
many thanks, L.

SAS/SATA DAS
I need to replace a slow HP MSA20 that's a bottleneck right now (We are an HP shop).
HP's only option with 3.5" SATA drives is stuck at SATA I behind a SAS controller.
Dell makes an MD1000 that claims SATA II speeds behind a SAS Perc 5/E (Don't know anything about dell).
Anyone got any real world info they can share? I need 3.5" SATA II at least 12 drives behind SAS,
I am

works here fine on the 9261, which is an OEM version of the same card
with the connectors in a different orientation... you might check your
LSI firmware revision.

what's the meaning of these in R-lang?
In this case the environment contains the variables local to the function, and its enclosure is the environment of the enclosing function.(R-lang:p11)
I want to know if the "enclosing function" means the closure of the function? for example ,if I call function mean(),and the create an environment, say e1,then the enclosure of e1 is the namespace of base package? Right?
Thank you!

Port multiplier support in megaraid* module for LSI LOGIC LSI00042 PCI-X SATA II Controller?
I have tried many permutations of search terms in google and I haven't
been able to find any confirmation that the megaraid* modules in centos4
supports port multipliers/multiplexers.
Here is a link to the controller I have in mind at newegg:

USB device not detected (CentOS 4.7)
I recently purchased an I/O Magic USB enclosure for 3.5" IDE hard
drive. Has anyone else used one of these? It works fine with
Windows, except of course that Windows can't read the ext2 partitions
on the disk I put into the enclosure. CentOS4 can't find the device,
much less access the drive -- it doesn't show up in "lsusb" output,
although the active light on the

RAID configuration suggestion???
we have several DELL R900 with PERC 6/E adapter in it. R900 using Redhat Linux. Each R900 have two PERC 6/E adapter and at least two MD1000 connect to it.

PERC 6/E -- two MD1000
PERC 6/E -- empty
Configuration 2:
PERC 6/E -- MD1000
PERC 6/E -- MD1000

what is difference between "slow initialize" and "patrol read" on RAID?
We have DELL server with MD1000 Disk array in it. O.S. is CENTOS 5.5. Recently every time MD1000 "patrol read" start I will get "media error" messages on /var/log/message file.
I use MD1000 "slow initialize" to initialize "bad disk" and NO error. After "slow initialize" finish, I manually "startup patrol read". I continue get
