Any rhyme or reason to disk dev names?
Hello,
I am curious to know if there is an easy way to guess or identify the
device names of disks. Previously the /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 system made sense
to me... I had a SATA controller card with 8 ports, and they showed up with
the numbers 1-8 in the "t" position of the device name.
But I just built a new system with two LSI SAS HBAs in it, and my device
names are along the lines of:

mpt_sas multipath problem?
Greetings,
We''re trying out a new JBOD here. Multipath (mpxio) is not working,
and we could use some feedback and/or troubleshooting advice.
The OS is oi151a7, running on an existing server with a 54TB pool
of internal drives. I believe the server hardware is not relevant
to the JBOD issue, although the internal drives do appear to the
OS with multipath device names (despite the fact

ZFS send/receive while write is enabled on receive side?
Hi all, from much of the documentation I''ve seen, the advice is to set
readonly=on on volumes on the receiving side during send/receive
operations. Is this still a requirement?
I''ve been trying the send/receive while NOT setting the receiver to
readonly and haven''t seen any problems even though we''re traversing
and ls''ing the dirs within the receiving

WD caviar/mpt issues
I know that this has been well-discussed already, but it''s been a few months - WD caviars with mpt/mpt_sas generating lots of retryable read errors, spitting out lots of beloved " Log info 31080000 received for target" messages, and just generally not working right.
(SM 836EL1 and 836TQ chassis - though I have several variations on theme depending on date of purchase: 836EL2s,

does sharing an SSD as slog and l2arc reduces its life span?
Hi,
I don''t know if it''s already been discussed here, but while
thinking about using the OCZ Vertex 2 Pro SSD (which according
to spec page has supercaps built in) as a shared slog and L2ARC
device it stroke me that this might not be a such a good idea.
Because this SSD is MLC based, write cycles are an issue here,
though I can''t find any number in their spec.
Why do I

Intel 320 as ZIL?
Are any of you using the Intel 320 as ZIL? It''s MLC based, but I
understand its wear and performance characteristics can be bumped up
significantly by increasing the overprovisioning to 20% (dropping
usable capacity to 80%).
Anyone have experience with this?

Not preserving permissions really preserves some
This appears to be a feature :-)
I'm running rsync 2.5.5 on Solaris 8, and testing transferring
files between two boxes with permission preservation turned *off*.
I have three files:
700 with permissions 700
770 with permissions 770
777 with permissions 770
The umask for the target system is set to: 007
[I have checked this via prints from the rsync code]
When the files get transferred,

Unable to allocate dma memory for extra SGL
Hi all;
We have a Solaris 10 U9 x86 instance running on Silicon Mechanics /
SuperMicro hardware.
Occasionally under high load (ZFS scrub for example), the box becomes
non-responsive (it continues to respond to ping but nothing else works
-- not even the local console). Our only solution is to hard reset
after which everything comes up normally.
Logs are showing the following:

Another MPT issue - kernel crash
Hi all,
I have faced yet another kernel panic that seems to be related to mpt
driver.
This time i was trying to add a new disk to a running system (snv_134)
and this new disk was not being detected...following a tip i ran the
lsitool to reset the bus and this lead to a system panic.

Supermicro SAS/SATA controllers?
The standard controller that has been recommended in the past is the
AOC-SAT2-MV8 - an 8 port with a marvel chipset. There have been several
mentions of LSI based controllers on the mailing lists and I''m wondering
about them.
One obvious difference is that the Marvel contoller is PCI-X and the LSI
controllers are PCI-E.
Supermicro have several LSI controllers. AOC-USASLP-L8i with the

I have been able to successfully create a script which show the return values of "lsearch".
Now what I would like to do, is for it to only show the

Not sure where to put this but I am cc''ing the ZFS - discussion board.
I was successfull in creating iscsi shares using ZFS set shareiscsi=on with 2 thin provisioned partitions of 1TB each (zfs create -s -V 1tb idrive/d1). Access to the shares with an iscsi initiator was successful, all was smooth, until the reboot.
Upon reboot, the console reports the following errors.

Anyone have any experience with a R510 with the PERC H200/H700 controller
with ZFS?
My perception is that Dell doesn''t play well with OpenSolaris.
Thanks,

Disk failure chokes all the disks attached to the failing disk HBA
Dear All,
It may be this not the correct mailing list, but I''m having a ZFS issue
when a disk is failing.
The system is a supermicro motherboard X8DTH-6F in a 4U chassis
(SC847E1-R1400LPB) and an external SAS2 JBOD (SC847E16-RJBOD1).
It makes a system with a total of 4 backplanes (2x SAS + 2x SAS2) each
of them connected to a 4 different HBA (2x LSI 3081E-R (1068 chip) + 2x
