How to test with RSpec a Rails plugin using “link_to” and “current_page?”
I''m writing a Rails plugin that builds up a menu in a view. I''m using
*link`_`to* to build the link and *current_page?* to set
class="active" on the current page.
I''ve *include*d *ActionView::Helpers::UrlHelper* so I can use
*link`_`to*.
To get *current`_`page?* working in the view, I''ve had to inherit the
current class (apparently ActionView::Base)

scope problems testing a helper method that calls link_to()
We''ve been having problems writing functional tests for helper methods
that rely on ActionView methods. Here''s a specific example.
In application_helper.rb I''ve got a method called ''party_link()¨:
def party_link(party)
link_to party.full_name, { :controller => ''contacts'',
:action =>

validating required fields during an update?
I have a User model with an email attribute. I''m using the following

validates_format_of :email,
:with => RFC822::EmailAddress,
:message => "must be a valid address in the form user@domain.com"
validates_uniqueness_of :email, :message => "address has already

What is has_many :through really buying you over HABTM?
So having just learned how to do has_many :through as opposed to HABTM,
and then, being concerned that I wouldn''t get it to work, I started
thinking about these two approaches.
It seems to me that the _only_ problem that the HM:T (has_many :through)
approach solves that HABTM doesn''t is the issue of the potential
collision of id columns between your join table and one of

problems testing helpers - link_to and url_for don''t work...
So I''ve used the helper test plugin, and also tried some things from
Rails Recipes, and basically neither seems to work for cases where a
helper does anything related to link_to/url_for, and this includes
calling named_routes. This is obviously an issue, as a common use for
helpers is to refactoring something like this:
<%= link_to "text that changes slightly", :id => id

Unit Test Error: `load_specification': undefined method `parse' for Time:Class
All,
I''ve come across a confusing problem when attempting to run unit tests
for an application on OSX (works on Windows).
I''m receiving the following error:
`load_specification'': undefined method `parse'' for Time:Class (NoMethodError)
This is also confusing because I can''t figure out how the error
appeared. When I revert back to previous revisions,

Using view helpers and route helpers in a model
Hi there,
I am trying to get something working and its driving me crazy. I have
been looking around for solutions to getting view helpers working in
models and for the most part I find this solution.
Add the following in the model you want to use them in
include ActionView::Helpers::UrlHelper
include ActionController::UrlWriter
However, when I try something like

stack level too deep problem
Hi all, I''m trying to overload the link_to function, (to disable link_to if
the user has no access right)
this is my code, it work the first time I run the application, the second
time I refresh the page I always get "stack level too deep error"
module UsersHelper
include ActionView::Helpers::UrlHelper
alias_method :link_to_original, :link_to
def permission?

absolute urls in url_for vs. link_to
In both url_for and link_to, the :only_path param can be used to
determine whether the link url used is complete with hostname and path,
or just has the path (a kind of relative url).
However, in url_for it defaults to false (urls with hostnames), and in
link_to it defaults to true ( urls without hostnames, just paths).
Is there any reason for this discrepency? To me, it violates the
principle

[newbie]how to use link_to to link to another controller?
I am just diving into Rails and I am a bit puzzled by the link_to function.
am writing an app to display my photographs in categories. My application layout
has a sidebar to show a menu with categories from the categories table in the
database (like in taken from the tutorials), to be shown on every page.
I managed to get a global @menu_categories object that keeps track of all the
categories

How to protect images from public?
Hi,
I''m trying to figure out the best way to protect images uploaded by
users who may wish to keep them private.
For example, if they are uploaded in the default file_column location
(/public/blah/blah/1/) then someone can simply type the URL
http://www.blah.com/blah/blah/1 and get the image.
I can store the images in a non-public directory in the rails app (ie:
/railsapp/images/X/)

Would you switch jobs for the chance to use Textmate?
Lets say you had a pretty decent job, but your company mandated use of
emacs. The poaching employer offers you a free copy of Textmate(tm).
Would you jump ship solely in order to use Textmate at company B?
Cheers,
Dave
