current zfs tuning in RELENG_7 (AMD64) suggestions ?
I gave the AMD64 version of 7.2 RC2 a spin and all installed as
expected off the dvd
INTEL S3200SHV MB, Core2Duo, 4G of RAM
In the past it had been suggested that for zfs tuning, something like
vm.kmem_size_max="1073741824"
vm.kmem_size="1073741824"
vfs.zfs.prefetch_disable=1
However doing a simple test with bonnie and dd, there does not seem
to be very much difference in

best practices in using shared storage for XEN Virtual Machines and auto-failover?
Hi all,
Can anyone pleas tell me what would be best practice to use shared
storage with virtual machines, especially when it involved high
availability / automated failover between 2 XEN servers?
i.e. if I setup 2x identical XEN servers, each with say 16GB RAM, 4x
1GB NIC''s, etc. Then I need the xen domU''s to auto failover between
the 2 servers if either goes down (hardware

ZFS on Caviar Blue (Hard Drive Recommendations)
Hi list,
I googled around but couldn''t find anything on whether someone has
good or bad experiences with the Caviar *Blue* drives? I saw in the
archives Caviar Blacks are *not* recommended for ZFS arrays (excluding
apparently RE3 and RE4?). Specifically I''m looking to buy Western
Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1TB drives [1]. Does anyone have any
experience with these drives?

ZFS RAID-Z2 degraded vs RAID-Z1
Had an idea, could someone please tell me why it''s wrong? (I feel like it has to be).
A RaidZ-2 pool with one missing disk offers the same failure resilience as a healthy RaidZ1 pool (no data loss when one disk fails). I had initially wanted to do single parity raidz pool (5disk), but after a recent scare decided raidz2 was the way to go. With the help of a sparse file

send/recv over ssh
I know i''m probably doing something REALLY stupid.....but for some reason i
can''t get send/recv to work over ssh. I just built a new media server and
i''d like to move a few filesystem from my old server to my new server but
for some reason i keep getting strange errors...
At first i''d see something like this:

Space usage
I''m just uploading all my data to my server and the space used is much more than what i''m uploading;
Documents = 147MB
Videos = 11G
Software= 1.4G
By my calculations, that equals 12.547T, yet zpool list is showing 21G as being allocated;

"Appending" data to the middle of a file using btrfs-specific features
Hello,
I''d like to know if there has been any discussion about adding a new
feature to write (add) data at an offset, but without overwriting
existing data, or re-writing the existing data. Essentially, in-place
addition/removal of data to a file at a place other than the end of
the file.
Some possible use-cases of such a feature would be:

I don''t fully understand -m or -d. Why would this make a truer raid0 that with no options?
Is it necessary to use fdisk on new drives in creating a BTRFS multi-drive array? Or is this all that''s needed:

(preview) Whitepaper - ZFS Pools Explained - feedback welcome
Hello list,
while following this list for more then 1 year, I feel that this list was a great way to get insights into ZFS. Thank you all for contributing.
Over the last month''s I was writing a little "whitepaper" trying to consolidate the knowledge collected here. It has now reached a "beta" state and I would like to share the result with you. I call it

Loading FreeBSD in an HVM-domain on Intel-based host with GRUB
Hello all,
please tell me,
is it possible (at least theoretically)
to circumvent bug 622 [1] by using
GRUB instead of /boot/loader to load FreeBSD kernel?
Or it is silly idea: even if we bypass /boot/loader we will
not be able to run FreeBSD kernel in a HVM-domain on a
Intel-based host for some other reason?
As far as I know, GRUB can''t load FreeBSD kernel
directly, but only can

create mirror copy of existing zfs stack
Hi,
I have a mirror pool tank having two devices underneath. Created in this way
#zpool create tank mirror c3t500507630E020CEAd1 c3t500507630E020CEAd0
Created file system tank/home
#zfs create tank/home
Created another file system tank/home
#zfs create tank/home/sridhar
After that I have created files and directories under tank/home and tank/home/sridhar.
Now I detached 2nd device i.e

RAID10
Hi All,
I am looking at ZFS and I get that they call it RAIDZ which is similar to RAID 5, but what about RAID 10? Isn''t a RAID 10 setup better for data protection?
So if I have 8 x 1.5tb drives, wouldn''t I:
- mirror drive 1 and 5
- mirror drive 2 and 6
- mirror drive 3 and 7
- mirror drive 4 and 8
Then stripe 1,2,3,4
Then stripe 5,6,7,8
How does one do this with ZFS?

FreeBSD 7.0 + Xen 3.1 + HVM: Success!
Just thought I'd pass along that I have successfully installed FreeBSD 7.0
into a Xen 3.1 HVM. ?This one went as smooth as I expected, considering my
experience with 6.3. ?Haven't done any benchmarking or stress testing or
port installs or anything. ?But so far it's working nicely.
Here's all the info. ?If you'd like to see anything else, let me know.

vncdisplay #
How does this setting work? I was hoping to use it to make connections predictable. I have vncunused = 1 as well, but xen never starts the server on the expected port (dom-u id).
Thanks!

vbd could not be connected
I have installed Kubuntu 8.04 with xen 3.2 on kernel 2.6.24-16-xen on
amd64 hardware.
Then I have created a new domU with xen-tools. The domU is using
loopback-images.
When I try to start the domU it ends with this:
Error: Device 51713 (vbd) could not be connected. losetup /dev/loop0
/home/xen/domains/xx/swap.img failed.
loopx is raised by 2 for every try.
It looks like a classic and simple
