OT: Recommendations for a virtual storage server
Hi all,
I need to install a virtual machine acting as a virtual storage server under
CentOS 5.x (using kvm, xen, virtualbox or vmware). This virtual storage machine
needs to server storage to another ESXi server and at the same time to the host
where is installed.
This is due to the limitations of hardware I have available. Both hosts needs to
server several machines.
It is very

can you recover a pool if you lose the zil (b134+)
I was messing around with a ramdisk on a pool and I forgot to remove it
before I shut down the server. Now I am not able to mount the pool. I am
not concerned with the data in this pool, but I would like to try to figure
out how to recover it.
I am running Nexenta 3.0 NCP (b134+).
I have tried a couple of the commands (zpool import -f and zpool import -FX
llift)

zfs questions wrt unused blocks
Gents,
We want to understand the mechanism of zfs a bit better.
Q: what is the design/algorithm of zfs in terms of reclaiming unused
blocks?
Q: what criteria is there for zfs to start reclaiming blocks
Issue at hand is an LDOM or zone running in a virtual
(thin-provisioned) disk on a NFS server and a zpool inside that vdisk.
This vdisk tends to grow in size even if the user writes and deletes

OT: Caching synchronous writes
[ Wish there was a generic, active Linux "storage" mailing list out
there -- something other than the kernel lists I mean ]
To frame the discussion, we use VMware ESX (vSphere) quite a bit with
NFS datastores. Often times with NetApp, but lately, more often with
Solaris 10 + ZFS + SSD's for ZIL (intent log or write cache).
The ZIL lets us use synchronous writes (safer) without

Homegrown Hybrid Storage
Hi,
I''m looking to build a virtualized web hosting server environment accessing
files on a hybrid storage SAN. I was looking at using the Sun X-Fire x4540
with the following configuration:
- 6 RAID-Z vdevs with one hot spare each (all 500GB 7200RPM SATA drives)
- 2 Intel X-25 32GB SSD''s as a mirrored ZIL
- 4 Intel X-25 64GB SSD''s as the L2ARC.

HP Proliant DL360 G7
Hello,
Has anyone out there been able to qualify the Proliant DL360 G7 for your Solaris/OI/Nexenta environments? Any pros/cons/gotchas (vs. previous generation HP servers) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

questions about zil
I recently got a new SSD (ocz vertex LE 50gb)
It seems to work really well as a ZIL performance wise. My question is, how
safe is it? I know it doesn''t have a supercap so lets'' say dataloss
occurs....is it just dataloss or is it pool loss?
also, does the fact that i have a UPS matter?
the numbers i''m seeing are really nice....these are some nfs tar times

How to know the recordsize of a file
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I would like to know the blocksize of a particular file. I know the
blocksize for a particular file is decided at creation time, in fuction
of the write size done and the recordsize property of the dataset.
How can I access that information?. Some zdb magic?.

Intel 320 as ZIL?
Are any of you using the Intel 320 as ZIL? It''s MLC based, but I
understand its wear and performance characteristics can be bumped up
significantly by increasing the overprovisioning to 20% (dropping
usable capacity to 80%).
Anyone have experience with this?

creating a fast ZIL device for $200
Recently, I''ve been reading through the ZIL/slog discussion and
have the impression that a lot of folks here are (like me)
interested in getting a viable solution for a cheap, fast and
reliable ZIL device.
I think I can provide such a solution for about $200, but it
involves a lot of development work.
The basic idea: the main problem when using a HDD as a ZIL device
are the cache flushes

Sonnet Tempo SSD supported?
Anyone here using http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempossd.html
with a zfs-capable OS? Is e.g. OpenIndiana supported?
Thanks.

l2arc current usage (population size)
Hello,
How do you tell how much of your l2arc is populated? I''ve been looking for a while now, can''t seem to find it.
Must be easy, as this blog entry shows it over time:
http://blogs.sun.com/brendan/entry/l2arc_screenshots
And follow up, can you tell how much of each data set is in the arc or l2arc?

ZFS on a 11TB HW RAID-5 controller
Hello all,
I am a complete newbie to OpenSolaris, and must to setup a ZFS NAS. I do have linux experience, but have never used ZFS. I have tried to install OpenSolaris Developer 134 on a 11TB HW RAID-5 virtual disk, but after the installation I can only use one 2TB disk, and I cannot partition the rest. I realize that maximum partition size is 2TB, but I guess the rest must be usable. For

Performance drop during scrub?
Hi all
I have a test system with snv134 and 8x2TB drives in RAIDz2 and currently no Zil or L2ARC. I noticed the I/O speed to NFS shares on the testpool drops to something hardly usable while scrubbing the pool.
How can I address this? Will adding Zil or L2ARC help? Is it possible to tune down scrub''s priority somehow?
Best regards

Oplock Usage Recommendations Whitepaper
I have written a whitepaper for CIFS/9000 Server (Samba on HP-UX) that
discusses some rudimentry usage recommendations for oplocks. Due to
the recent discussion about oplocks on the list, I have edited the paper
to be more generic for Samba on HP-UX and converted it to plain text.
It's still 7 pages long, so it may be inappropriate to paste into an
email. If there is any interest in it, I

Samba and Terminal Server Whitepaper
Attached is a 500KB read-only .doc file with a Samba and Terminal Server
whitepaper. I have tried to hit every known issue and all available
workarounds. If anyone has comments or suggestions, let me know. JT
has it, so it should end up in the next How-To. Sorry about the file
format, but the .pdf was 2.5MB, which I thought was too big to post.
