NexentaStor 3.0.3 vs OpenSolaris - Patches more up to date?
I see in NexentaStor''s announcement of Community Edition 3.0.3 they mention some backported patches in this release. Aside from their management features / UI what is the core OS difference if we move to Nexenta from OpenSolaris b134? These DeDup bugs are my main frustration - if a staff member does a rm * in a directory with dedup you can take down the whole storage server - all with

JBOD recommendation for ZFS usage
Dear all Sorry if it''s kind of off-topic for the list but after talking to lots of vendors I''m running out of ideas... We are looking for JBOD systems which (1) hold 20+ 3.3" SATA drives (2) are rack mountable (3) have all the nive hot-swap stuff (4) allow 2 hosts to connect via SAS (4+ lines per host) and see all available drives as disks, no RAID volume. (preview) Whitepaper - ZFS Pools Explained - feedback welcome
Hello list, while following this list for more then 1 year, I feel that this list was a great way to get insights into ZFS. Thank you all for contributing. Over the last month''s I was writing a little "whitepaper" trying to consolidate the knowledge collected here. It has now reached a "beta" state and I would like to share the result with you. I call it -

With RAID-Z2 under load, machine stops responding to local or remote login
Hi world, I have a 10-disk RAID-Z2 system with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM and a 3 GHz Core 2 Duo. It''s exporting ~280 filesystems over NFS to about half a dozen machines. Under some loads (in particular, any attempts to rsync between another machine and this one over SSH), the machine''s load average sometimes goes insane (27+), and it appears to all be in kernel-land (as nothing in

Kernel panic on ZFS import - how do I recover?
I posted this on the www.nexentastor.org forums, but no answer so far, so I apologize if you are seeing this twice. I am also engaged with nexenta support, but was hoping to get some additional insights here. I am running nexenta 3.0.3 community edition, based on 134. The box crashed yesterday, and goes into a reboot loop (kernel panic) when trying to import my data pool, screenshot attached.

ZFS volume turned into a socket - any way to restore data?
I have recently upgraded from NexentaStor 2 to NexentaStor 3 and somehow one of my volumes got corrupted. Its showing up as a socket. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to get my data back? It seems like it''s still there, but not recognized as a folder. I ran zpool scrub, but it came back clean. Attached is the output of #zdb data/rt 2.0K sr-xr-xr-x 17 root root 17 Jul

Large scale ZFS deployments out there (>200 disks)
While thinking about ZFS as the next generation filesystem without limits I am wondering if the real world is ready for this kind of incredible technology ... I''m actually speaking of hardware :) ZFS can handle a lot of devices. Once in the import bug (http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6761786) is fixed it should be able to handle a lot of disks. I want to

Big JBOD: what would you do?
ZFS fans, I''m preparing some analyses on RAS for large JBOD systems such as the Sun Fire X4500 (aka Thumper). Since there are zillions of possible permutations, I need to limit the analyses to some common or desirable scenarios. Naturally, I''d like your opinions. I''ve already got a few scenarios in analysis, and I don''t want to spoil the brain storming, so

Are there (non-Sun/Oracle) vendors selling OpenSolaris/ZFS based NAS Hardware?
I''ve seen the Nexenta and EON webpages, but I''m not looking to build my own. Is there anything out there I can just buy? -Kyle

Fileserver help.
Hi all. Im pretty new to the whole OpenSolaris thing, i''ve been doing a bit of research but cant find anything on what i need. I am thinking of making myself a home file server running OpenSolaris with ZFS and utilizing Raid/Z I was wondering if there is anything i can get that will allow Windows Media Center based hardware (HTPC or XBOX 360) to steam from my new fileserver? Any help

ZFS Scalability/performance
Hello, I''m quite interested in ZFS, like everybody else I suppose, and am about to install FBSD with ZFS. On that note, i have a different first question to start with. I personally am a Linux fanboy, and would love to see/use ZFS on linux. I assume that I can use those ZFS disks later with any os that can work/recognizes ZFS correct? e.g. I can install/setup ZFS in FBSD, and later use

questions about zil
I recently got a new SSD (ocz vertex LE 50gb) It seems to work really well as a ZIL performance wise. My question is, how safe is it? I know it doesn''t have a supercap so lets'' say dataloss occurs....is it just dataloss or is it pool loss? also, does the fact that i have a UPS matter? the numbers i''m seeing are really nice....these are some nfs tar times before

I''m just uploading all my data to my server and the space used is much more than what i''m uploading; Documents = 147MB Videos = 11G Software= 1.4G By my calculations, that equals 12.547T, yet zpool list is showing 21G as being allocated; NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT dpool 27.2T 21.2G 27.2T 0% 1.00x ONLINE - It doesn''t look like

Mirrored Servers
Lets say I have two servers, both running opensolaris with ZFS. I basically want to be able to create a filesystem where the two servers have a common volume, that is mirrored between the two. Meaning, each server keeps an identical, real time backup of the other''s data directory. Set them both up as file servers, and load balance between the two for incoming requests. How would anyone
