Data loss bug - sidelined??
In August last year I posted this bug, a brief summary of which would be that ZFS still accepts writes to a faulted pool, causing data loss, and potentially silent data loss:
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6735932
There have been no updates to the bug since September, and nobody seems to be assigned to it. Can somebody let me know what''s happening with this

one ZIL SLOG per zpool?
I have three zpools on a server and want to add a mirrored pair of ssd''s for the ZIL. Can the same pair of SSDs be used for the ZIL of all three zpools or is it one ZIL SLOG device per zpool?

slog / log recovery is here!

NOTE: This is last resort if you need your data now. This worked for me, and
I hope it works for you. If you have any reservations, please wait for Sun
to release something official, and don''t blame me if your data is gone.
PS -- This worked for me b/c I didn''t try and replace the log on a running

ZFS disk failure question
So, my Areca controller has been complaining via email of read errors for a couple days on SATA channel 8. The disk finally gave up last night at 17:40. I got to say I really appreciate the Areca controller taking such good care of me.
For some reason, I wasn''t able to log into the server last night or in the morning, probably because my home dir was on the zpool with the failed disk

How do separate ZFS filesystems affect performance?
I''m working with a Cyrus IMAP server running on a T2000 box under
Solaris 10 10/09 with current patches. Mailboxes reside on six ZFS
filesystems, each containing about 200 gigabytes of data. These are
part of a single zpool built on four Iscsi devices from our Netapp
filer.
One of these ZFS filesystems contains a number of global and per-user
databases in addition to one sixth of the

Balancing LVOL fill?
Hi all
I have this server with some 50TB disk space. It originally had 30TB on WD Greens, was filled quite full, and another storage chassis was added. Now, space problem gone, fine, but what about speed? Three of the VDEVs are quite full, as indicated below. VDEV #3 (the one with the spare active) just spent some 72 hours resilvering a 2TB drive. Now, those green drives suck quite hard, but not

questions about zil
I recently got a new SSD (ocz vertex LE 50gb)
It seems to work really well as a ZIL performance wise. My question is, how
safe is it? I know it doesn''t have a supercap so lets'' say dataloss
occurs....is it just dataloss or is it pool loss?
also, does the fact that i have a UPS matter?
the numbers i''m seeing are really nice....these are some nfs tar times

Cannot remove slog device from zpool
Hello,
I''ve looked quickly through the archives and haven''t found mention of
this issue. I''m running SXCE (snv_99), which I believe uses zfs version
13. I had an existing zpool:

SAS or SATA HBA with write cache
Anyone know of a SATA and/or SAS HBA with battery backed write cache?
Seems like using a full-blown RAID controller and exporting each individual drive back to ZFS as a single LUN is a waste of power and $$$. Looking for any thoughts or ideas.
Thanks.

Bursty writes - why?
I have a 24 x 1TB system being used as an NFS file server. Seagate SAS disks connected via an LSI 9211-8i SAS controller, disk layout 2 x 11 disk RAIDZ2 + 2 spares. I am using 2 x DDR Drive X1s as the ZIL. When we write anything to it, the writes are always very bursty like this:
ool 488K 20.0T 0 0 0 0
xpool 488K 20.0T 0 0 0 0

can you recover a pool if you lose the zil (b134+)
I was messing around with a ramdisk on a pool and I forgot to remove it
before I shut down the server. Now I am not able to mount the pool. I am
not concerned with the data in this pool, but I would like to try to figure
out how to recover it.
I am running Nexenta 3.0 NCP (b134+).
I have tried a couple of the commands (zpool import -f and zpool import -FX
llift)

Zfs ignoring spares?
Hi all
I have installed a new server with 77 2TB drives in 11 7-drive RAIDz2 VDEVs, all on WD Black drives. Now, it seems two of these drives were bad, one of them had a bunch of errors, the other was very slow. After zfs offlining these and then zfs replacing them with online spares, resilver ended and I thought it''d be ok. Appearently not. Albeit the resilver succeeds, the pool status

Zil on multiple usb keys
This might be a stupid question, but here goes... Would adding, say, 4 4 or 8gb usb keys as a zil make enough of a difference for writes on an iscsi shared vol?
I am finding reads are not too bad (40is mb/s over gige on 2 500gb drives stripped) but writes top out at about 10 and drop a lot lower... If I where to add a couple usb keys for zil, would it make a difference?
Thanks.

Plugging in a hard drive after Solaris has booted up?
Hi guys,
I have a quick question, I am playing around with ZFS and here''s what I did.
I created a storage pool with several drives. I unplugged 3 out of 5 drives from the array, currently:
NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
gpool UNAVAIL 0 0 0 insufficient replicas
raidz1 UNAVAIL 0 0 0 insufficient replicas
c8t2d0 UNAVAIL 0 0

ZFS Recovery: What do I try next?
I would like to pick the brains of the ZFS experts on this list: What
would you do next to try and recover this zfs pool?
I have a ZFS RAIDZ1 pool named bank0 that I cannot import. It was
composed of 4 1.5 TiB disks. One disk is totally dead. Another had
SMART errors, but using GNU ddrescue I was able to copy all the data
off successfully.
I have copied all 3 remaining disks as images using

Shutting down / exporting zpool without flushing slog devices
Hey folks,
This might be a daft idea, but is there any way to shut down solaris / zfs without flushing the slog device?
The reason I ask is that we''re planning to use mirrored nvram slogs, and in the long term hope to use a pair of 80GB ioDrives. I''d like to have a large amount of that reserved for write cache (potentially 20-30GB), to facilitate rapid suspend to disk of

How do I clean up corrupted files from zpool status -v?
Hi Folks..
I have a system that was inadvertently left unmirrored for root. We were able
to add a mirror disk, resilver, and fix the corrupted files (nothing very
interesting was corrupt, whew), but zpool status -v still shows errors..
Will this self correct when we replace the degraded disk and resilver? Or is
there something else that I''m not finding that I need to do to clean up?

OpenSolaris ZFS NAS Setup
If it''s of interest, I''ve written up some articles on my experiences of building a ZFS NAS box which you can read here:
http://breden.org.uk/2008/03/02/a-home-fileserver-using-zfs/
I used CIFS to share the filesystems, but it will be a simple matter to use NFS instead: issue the command ''zfs set sharenfs=on pool/filesystem'' instead of ''zfs set

Good SLOG devices?
Hi
I''m running OpenSolaris 148 on a few boxes, and newer boxes are getting installed as we speak. What would you suggest for a good SLOG device? It seems some new PCI-E-based ones are hitting the market, but will those require special drivers? Cost is obviously alsoo an issue here....
Vennlige hilsener / Best regards
