I''m trying to automatically fill a "posted_by" text by with whoever is
logged into the session. How do you set the value attribute using "<%=
text_field ... %>"???
I''ve tried:
<%= text_field ''post'', ''posted_by'', ''value'' =>
User.find(session[:user_id]).name.capitalize) %>
But I get

problem with nil.user
Hi all, I''ve put new code into my app so that an administrator will have
extra privileges (administer users, edit pages). The error is:
''Couldn''t find User without an ID''
So the app is looking for a logged in user when the homepage is
accessed.
Heres my code:

R Data Manipulation - Transposing Data by a Given Column, Like User_ID
Hello,
I'd like to transpose data to create an analysis-friendly dataframe. See
below for an example, I was unable to use t(x) and I couldn't find a
function with options like PROC TRANSPOSE in SAS.
The ideal solution handles variable quantities of SITE - but beggars can't
be choosers. :-)
Thank you in advance,
Mike

Access to session data
Greetings,
This, I hope, is a simply answered question.
Based on Agile Web Development with Rails (depot application), I''m
developing a single table application for contact info. There is only
an admin side to this, so there''s always authentication.
Part of the info record (member) is changed_by and changed_at which I
automatically want updated. Changed_at looks after

Sessions or lookups?
My application needs to know if a user is an administrator, for security
and aesthetic reasons. At the moment, I store true/false in the session
by doing the following at login:
session[:user_is_admin] = authenticated_user.is_admin?
Is this OK to do? Or should I really be doing the following every time:
User.find(session[:user_id]).is_admin?
(user_id is always in the session too)
Is there

message is intended for.

How to save the user_id in a separate column when using ActiveRecord::SessionStore?
Hi!
I''m converting my Rails 3.1 app from cookie sessions to database
sessions.
I''ve added an extra column on the sessions table to save the user_id.
I read the documentation in
http://apidock.com/rails/v3.1.0/ActiveRecord/SessionStore and googled
but can''t seem to find a way to set the session''s user_id that works.
Can someone help?
Thanks

Action Mailer woes
Hi gang,
Im having my first stab at ActionMailer and not having any luck. Perhaps
someone could help me out.
I generated a a mailer called ItemMailer - its purpose is to take some
information that I''ve already gathered in a ToDo list form and to mail
it out to the person who is nominated for the task
In environment.rb I have;

Could anyone please help with rspec/nested resource behavior checking?
My problem has been listed here:

Don''t think it would be required to completely re-type it here :)
Thanks!

Securing my database with user session data
I have a few forms that adds information to a database, and one of the
fields is "user_id" This field relates the stored information (in this
case a "route") with the user who entered it.
I have a few questions.
First, is the controller the best place to set the user_id? Right now I
am using,
@route = Route.new
@route.user_id = session[:user].id
@route.save
Should this

User Authentication
I''m trying to create a simple authentication system but am failing
miserably. I''m (sort of) following the "Logging In" chapter of the Agile
book. Ideally, any access to http://example.com/publish (and any of its
subdirectories) should redirect to http:/example.com/publish/login when
there is no valid session user_id.
Code so far:

Now I want to use the results of this...in a page...so I am trying to

@sess_user = User.find([:first, "id = ?", session[:user_id])

agile depot app login failure :(
Hi *,
In an attempt to go back to the drawing board and learn RoR some more -
I have built the depot application from the agile book.
After finishing I tried to create a user for the admin section, however
when ever I go to:
http://localhost:3000/login/add_user
It redirects to the login action, I don''t see the [add user] submit
button??
I am sure this is connected to the

Experiences with ModelSecurity
Hiall,
I would be very interested in your opinions on the ModelSecurity
plugin by Bruce Perens.

Some time ago, I read on a few pages that it is the way to go, on this
list however, I didn''t read much about it. Apart from it''s security
level,

I''ve upgraded to mySQL 5.0, and it''s gone pretty smoothly except that on
