ZFS Deduplication Replication
Hello; Dedup on ZFS is an absolutely wonderful feature! Is there a way to conduct dedup replication across boxes from one dedup ZFS data set to another? Warmest Regards Steven Sim

Paravirtualized Solaris Update 6 (10/08)?
Gurus; I''ve been running Solaris 10 on a HVM domain on my machine (running SXCE snv_93 x86) for some time now. Now that Solaris 10 Update 6 (10/08) has been released, I tried creating a Paravirtualized Guest domain but got the same error message I got previously... # virt-install -n sol10 -p -r 1560 --nographics -f /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/sol10 -l /stage/sol-10-u6-> Starting

Pool performance when nearly full
Hi I know some of this has been discussed in the past but I can''t quite find the exact information I''m seeking (and I''d check the ZFS wikis but the websites are down at the moment). Firstly, which is correct, free space shown by "zfs list" or by "zpool iostat" ? zfs list: used 50.3 TB, free 13.7 TB, total = 64 TB, free = 21.4% zpool iostat: used

ZFS Dedupe reporting incorrect savings
Hi, Created a zpool with 64k recordsize and enabled dedupe on it. zpool create -O recordsize=64k TestPool device1 zfs set dedup=on TestPool I copied files onto this pool over nfs from a windows client. Here is the output of zpool list Prompt:~# zpool list NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT TestPool 696G 19.1G 677G 2% 1.13x ONLINE - When I ran a

I''m just uploading all my data to my server and the space used is much more than what i''m uploading; Documents = 147MB Videos = 11G Software= 1.4G By my calculations, that equals 12.547T, yet zpool list is showing 21G as being allocated; NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CAP DEDUP HEALTH ALTROOT dpool 27.2T 21.2G 27.2T 0% 1.00x ONLINE - It doesn''t look like

Dear All : Under Sun Storage 7000 system, can we see per share ratio after enable dedup function ? We would like deep to see each share dedup ratio. On Web GUI, only show dedup ratio entire storage pool. Thanks a lot, -- Rex -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

ZFS Dedup question
I created a zfs pool with dedup with the following settings: zpool create data c8t1d0 zfs create data/shared zfs set dedup=on data/shared The thing I was wondering about was it seems like ZFS only dedup at the file level and not the block. When I make multiple copies of a file to the store I see an increase in the deup ratio, but when I copy similar files the ratio stays at 1.00x. -- This

Finding where dedup''d files are
Is there an easy way to find out what datasets have dedup''d data in them. Even better would be to discover which files in a particular dataset are dedup''d. I ran # zdb -DDDD which gave output like: index 1055c9f21af63 refcnt 2 single DVA[0]=<0:1e274ec3000:2ac00:STD:1> [L0 deduplicated block] sha256 uncompressed LE contiguous unique unencrypted 1-copy size=20000L/20000P

[RFC] Online dedup for Btrfs
Hello, I was bored this weekend so I hacked up online dedup for Btrfs. It''s working quite well so I think it can be more widely tested. There are two ways to use it 1) Compatible mode - this is a bit slower but will handle being used by older kernels. We use the csum tree to find duplicate blocks. Since it is relatively easy to have crc32c collisions this also involves reading the

Can I "upgrade" a striped pool of vdevs to mirrored vdevs?
Hi, once I created a zpool of single vdevs not using mirroring of any kind. Now I wonder if it''s possible to add vdevs and mirror the currently existing ones. Thanks, budy -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

mailbox format w/ separate headers/data
In the future, it would be cool if there were a mailbox format (dbox2?) where mail headers and each mime part were stored in separate files. This would enable the zfs dedup feature to be used to maximum benefit. In the zfs filesystem, there is a dedup feature which stores only 1 copy of duplicate blocks. In a normal mail file, the headers will be different for each recipient and the chances of

what happens to the deduptable (DDT) when you set dedup=off ???
I tried the deduplication feature but the performance of my fileserver dived from writing 50MB/s via CIFS to 4MB/s. what happens to the deduped blocks when you set dedup=off? are they written back to disk? is the deduptable deleted or is it still there? thanks -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

Confusion regarding ''zfs send''
I''m playing around with snv_128 on one of my systems, and trying to see what kinda of benefits enabling dedup will give me. The standard practice for reprocessing data that''s already stored to add compression and now dedup seems to be a send / receive pipe similar to: zfs send -R <old fs>@snap | zfs recv -d <new fs> However, according to the man page,

dedup testing?
Hi all Has anyone done any testing with dedup with OI? On opensolaris there is a nifty "feature" that allows the system to hang for hours or days if attempting to delete a dataset on a deduped pool. This is said to be fixed, but I haven''t seen that myself, so I''m just wondering... I''ll get a 10TB test box released for testing OI in a few weeks, but before

Deduplication - deleting the original
In reading this blog post: http://blogs.sun.com/bobn/entry/taking_zfs_deduplication_for_a a question came to mind..... To understand the context of the question, consider the opening paragraph from the above post; Here is my test case: I have 2 directories of photos, totaling about 90MB > each. And here''s the trick - they are almost complete duplicates of each > other. I downloaded

Dedupping Has_many through, :unique=>true
Hi, In the Agile book, it is told that by putting a :unique => true will dedup the row with ActiveRecord. But it''s not working out for me. Do I need edge rails for this? I simply want to dedup any join model associations, for instance: category_id | inventory_id 384 1 first entry 384 2 this would be ok. 384 1 this would

cross platform (freebsd) zfs pool replication
Hi, I have two servers running: freebsd with a zpool v28 and a nexenta (opensolaris b134) running zpool v26. Replication (with zfs send/receive) from the nexenta box to the freebsd works fine, but I have a problem accessing my replicated volume. When I''m typing and autocomplete with tab key the command cd /remotepool/us (for /remotepool/users) I get a panic. check the panic @

NexentaStor 3.0.3 vs OpenSolaris - Patches more up to date?
I see in NexentaStor''s announcement of Community Edition 3.0.3 they mention some backported patches in this release. Aside from their management features / UI what is the core OS difference if we move to Nexenta from OpenSolaris b134? These DeDup bugs are my main frustration - if a staff member does a rm * in a directory with dedup you can take down the whole storage server - all with
