ZFS Scalability/performance
Hello, I''m quite interested in ZFS, like everybody else I suppose, and am about to install FBSD with ZFS. On that note, i have a different first question to start with. I personally am a Linux fanboy, and would love to see/use ZFS on linux. I assume that I can use those ZFS disks later with any os that can work/recognizes ZFS correct? e.g. I can install/setup ZFS in FBSD, and later use

ZFS send/receive to Solaris/FBSD/OpenIndiana/Nexenta VM guest?
Hello, I''m debating an OS change and also thinking about my options for data migration to my next server, whether it is on new or the same hardware. Migrating to a new machine I understand is a simple matter of ZFS send/receive, but reformatting the existing drives to host my existing data is an area I''d like to learn a little more about. In the past I''ve asked about

FBSD All-in-one security box?
Hey *, as I sweat through another day of crap dealing with an all-in-one box (firewall, IDS, AVS, report generating, soon to be a VPN server) I'm wondering if someone has started a project to put some freeware together in some semblance of sanity on a FBSD box. There's basically nothing that this box does that a combo of IPFW (or another bsd filter), snort, ntop, and some other freeware

dovecot / tcp-wrappers / FBSD 10.3
Can anyone share the proper config to get wrappers working in dovecot on FreeBSD? The dovecot examples do not seem to work, and I thought perhaps FBSD needs slightly different configs. I've compiled with: -DHAVE_LIBWRAP which I presume is the first step. The example for dovecot.conf in uncommenting: login_access_sockets = tcpwrap merely causes a log error of "imap-login: Error:

one ZIL SLOG per zpool?
I have three zpools on a server and want to add a mirrored pair of ssd''s for the ZIL. Can the same pair of SSDs be used for the ZIL of all three zpools or is it one ZIL SLOG device per zpool? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

ZFS and Virtualization
Hi experts, I have few issues about ZFS and virtualization: Virtualization and performance When filesystem traffic occurs on a zpool containing only spindles dedicated to this zpool i/o can be distributed evenly. When the zpool is located on a lun sliced from a raid group shared by multiple systems the capability of doing i/o from this zpool will be limited. Avoiding or limiting i/o to

zpool create using whole disk - do I add "p0"? E.g. c4t2d0 or c42d0p0
I have seen conflicting examples on how to create zpools using full disks. The zpool(1M) page uses "c0t0d0" but OpenSolaris Bible and others show "c0t0d0p0". E.g.: zpool create tank raidz c0t0d0 c0t1d0 c0t2d0 c0t3d0 c0t4d0 c0t5d0 zpool create tank raidz c0t0d0p0 c0t1d0p0 c0t2d0p0 c0t3d0p0 c0t4d0p0 c0t5d0p0 I have not been able to find any discussion on whether (or when) to

Adding a higher level partition to ZFS pool
Hi all, I would like to add a new partition to my ZFS pool but it looks like it''s more stricky than expected. The layout of my disk is the following: - first partition for Windows. I want to keep it. (no formatting !) - second partition for OpenSolaris. This is where I have all the Solaris slices (c0d0s0 etc). I have a single ZFS pool. OpenSolaris boots on ZFS. - third partition: a FAT

convert raidz from osx
I am converting a 4 disk raidz from osx to opensolaris. And I want to keep the data intact. I want zfs to get access to the full disk instead of a slice. I believe like c8d0 instead off c8d0s1. I wanted to do this 1 disk at a time and let it resilver. what is the proper way to do this. I tried, I believe from memory : zpool replace -f rpool c8d1s1 c8d1 but it didn''t let me do that. then I

drive displayed multiple times
So I just imported an old zpool onto this new system. The problem would be one drive (c4d0) is showing up twice. First it''s displayed as ONLINE, then it''s displayed as "UNAVAIL". This is obviously causing a problem as the zpool now thinks it''s in a degraded state, even though all drives are there, and all are online. This pool should have 7 drives total,

Mount ZFS on Dual Boot Machine (open)solaris
Hi, Sorry if this is a dumb question but i can''t seem to find an anwser anything close to what i am trying to figure out... I have a dual boot machine with 3 disks - 2 x 1TB mirror OpenSolaris with ZFS root pool 1x 250GB Solaris 10 with ZFS root pool This is a development\testing\home file server machine only. My question is tho, since I can boot into either OpenSolaris or Solaris

incomprehesible quirk
I am really quite puzzled as to why I have to edit smb.conf every time I want to print to the FreeBSD machine from Win2K. (Running FBSD 4.7, samba 2.2.7 and cups 1.1.15.1_4. When I log onto FBSD with username, password, I see the folders for the printers, home, tmp, etc. but no printer. (Only 1 installed - Epson Stylus Color 900). I can access the shares on FBSD from Win2k, but there is no

ZFS Prefetch Tuning
Hi All, Is there a way to tune the zfs prefetch on a per pool basis? I have a customer that is seeing slow performance on a pool the contains multiple tablespaces from an Oracle database, looking at the LUNs associated to that pool they are constantly at 80% - 100% busy. Looking at the output from arcstat for the miss % on data, prefetch and metadata we are getting around 5 - 10 % on data,

dovecot / tcp-wrappers / FBSD 10.3
# Space separated list of login access check sockets (e.g. tcpwrap) #login_access_sockets = login_access_sockets = tcpwrap service tcpwrap { unix_listener login/tcpwrap { group = $default_login_user mode = 0600 user = $default_login_user } } I believe that's all. I had placed it all in /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf. On Mon, Nov 14, 2016 at 11:45 AM, Jim Pazarena

zfs performance on fuse (Linux) compared to other fs
Hi, ok I know zfs-fuse is still incomplete and performance has not been considered, but still, before I''m going to use it for my /home I wanted a rough estimate. Another benchmark already asserted that zfs by itself, on Solaris, is a very fast beast (http://cmynhier.blogspot.com/2006/05/zfs-benchmarking.html), faster than ext3 on Linux and also faster than UFS. Interestingly UFS seems

samba3 FreeBSD pdc
Hello, Most of the docs i've seen for implementing samba3 as a pdc are for Linux. And for a most part they work with FreeBSD. I've not got the box production yet, i have several questions and was wondering if anyone used samba3 on fbsd as a pdc? If so i'd appreciate hearing from you. I want to set up single sign-on authentication, and password changing with the fbsd system. So

ATA DMA issues - are there problems lurking in 7.1?
Greetings, I have several Tyan S2518UGN (Thunder LE-T) server boards that I've been running for a few yrs. I've always used the SCSI on them, so never really used the ATA ports. I once experimented dual-booting NT2003 & FBSD on one of the ATA ports about a year ago. But ran into the problem I'm running into now. Back then I just blamed it on the drive (even tho it was brand new,

I.O error: zpool metadata corrupted after powercut
Last 2 weeks we had 2 zpools corrupted. Pool was visible via zpool import, but could not be imported anymore. During import attempt we got I/O error, After a first powercut we lost our jumpstart/nfsroot zpool (another pool was still OK). Luckaly jumpstart data was backed up and easely restored, nfsroot Filesystems where not but those where just test machines. We thought the metadata corruption

"zfs send" from solaris 10/08 to "zfs receive" on solaris 10/09
I built a fileserver on solaris 10u6 (10/08) intending to back it up to another server via zfs send | ssh othermachine ''zfs receive'' However, the new server is too new for 10u6 (10/08) and requires a later version of solaris . presently available is 10u8 (10/09) Is it crazy for me to try the send/receive with these two different versions of OSes? Is it possible the
