Large scale ZFS deployments out there (>200 disks)
While thinking about ZFS as the next generation filesystem without limits I am wondering if the real world is ready for this kind of incredible technology ... I''m actually speaking of hardware :) ZFS can handle a lot of devices. Once in the import bug (http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6761786) is fixed it should be able to handle a lot of disks. I want to

zvol space consumption vs ashift, metadata packing
I sent a zvol from host a, to host b, twice. Host b has two pools, one ashift=9, one ashift=12. I sent the zvol to each of the pools on b. The original source pool is ashift=9, and an old revision (2009_06 because it''s still running xen). I sent it twice, because something strange happened on the first send, to the ashift=12 pool. "zfs list -o space" showed figures at

Separate Zil on HDD ?
Hi all, I have a home server based on SNV_127 with 8 disks; 2 x 500GB mirrored root pool 6 x 1TB raidz2 data pool This server performs a few functions; NFS : for several ''lab'' ESX virtual machines NFS : mythtv storage (videos, music, recordings etc) Samba : for home directories for all networked PCs I backup the important data to external USB hdd each day. ZFS/NFS/LDOM performance issues
[Cross-posting to ldoms-discuss] We are occasionally seeing massive time-to-completions for I/O requests on ZFS file systems on a Sun T5220 attached to a Sun StorageTek 2540 and a Sun J4200, and using a SSD drive as a ZIL device. Primary access to this system is via NFS, and with NFS COMMITs blocking until the request has been sent to disk, performance has been deplorable. The NFS server is a

incremental backup with zfs to file
FULL backup to a file zfs snapshot -r rpool at 0908 zfs send -Rv rpool at 0908 > /net/remote/rpool/snaps/rpool.0908 INCREMENTAL backup to a file zfs snapshot -i rpool at 0908 rpool at 090822 zfs send -Rv rpool at 090822 > /net/remote/rpool/snaps/rpool.090822 As I understand the latter gives a file with changes between 0908 and 090822. Is this correct? How do I restore those files? I know

How to Catch ZFS error with syslog ?
I have a simple mirror pool with 2 disks. I pulled out one disk to simulate a failed drive. zpool status shows that the pool is in DEGRADED state. I want syslog to log these type of ZFS errors. I have syslog running and logging all sorts of error to a log server. But this failed disk in ZFS pool did not generate any syslog messages. ZFS diagnosists engine are online as seen bleow. hrs1zgpprd1#

FLAC: editing software
yes I know I can do that, but my question is if there is software to edit FLAC files without having to uncompress to WAV/recompress to FLAC. 2007/7/23, Avuton Olrich <avuton@gmail.com>: > > On 7/23/07, Harry Sack <tranzedude@gmail.com> wrote: > > hi > > > > does somebody know software for editing FLAC files? NIS failover
We just updated our configuratiosn to have multiple NIS servers, when we initiated a test of client failover, we were disapointed. It seemed that the only way to get a filaover was to /etc/init.d/ypbind restart. It behaves as indicated in http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=5084845 using ypbind-1.17.2-13 on Centos 4.5 / Linux xxxxxxxxxxxx 2.6.9-55.0.12.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Nov

zfs eradication
Hi, I was discussing the common practice of disk eradication used by many firms for security. I was thinking this may be a useful feature of ZFS to have an option to eradicate data as its removed, meaning after the last reference/snapshot is done and a block is freed, then write the eradication patterns back to the removed blocks. By any chance, has this been discussed or considered before?

understanding zfs/thunoer "bottlenecks"?
Currently I''m trying to figure out the best zfs layout for a thumper wrt. to read AND write performance. I did some simple mkfile 512G tests and found out, that per average ~ 500 MB/s seems to be the maximum on can reach (tried initial default setup, all 46 HDDs as R0, etc.). According to http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/ArchitectureWP_062806.pdf I would

SAS vs SATA: Same size, same speed, why SAS?
I''m building another 24-bay rackmount storage server, and I''m considering what drives to put in the bays. My chassis is a Supermicro SC846A, so the backplane supports SAS or SATA; my controllers are LSI3081E, again supporting SAS or SATA. Looking at drives, Seagate offers an enterprise (Constellation) 2TB 7200RPM drive in both SAS and SATA configurations; the SAS model offers

zpool split problem?
Zpool split is a wonderful feature and it seems to work well, and the choice of which disk got which name was perfect! But there seems to be an odd anomaly (at least with b132) . Started with c0t1d0s0 running b132 (root pool is called rpool) Attached c0t0d0s0 and waited for it to resilver Rebooted from c0t0d0s0 zpool split rpool spool Rebooted from c0t0d0s0, both rpool and spool were mounted

Still more questions WRT selecting a mobo for small ZFS RAID
Like many others, I am looking to put together a SOHO NAS based on ZFS/CIFS. The plan is 6 x 1TB drives in RAIDZ2 configuration, driven via mobo with 6 SATA ports. I''ve read most, if not all, of the threads here, as well as sbredon''s excellent article on building a home NAS, yet I still have a number of unanswered questions. I was leaning heavily towards the M2N-E for a while,

playback problems with oppo BDP-95
My friend somehow managed to get a BDP-95, even though the hardware isn't scheduled to ship until March. The problem is that the manual makes no mention of FLAC, at all, and only the web page claims to support the format. Playback of flac seems to work, but files from one online vendor work flawlessly while files from other online vendors have strange glitches that sound like a

Is ZFS internal reservation excessive?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 zpool and zfs report different free space because zfs takes into account an internal reservation of 32MB or 1/64 of the capacity of the pool, what is bigger. So in a 2TB Harddisk, the reservation would be 32 gigabytes. Seems a bit excessive to me... - -- Jesus Cea Avion _/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ jcea at jcea.es -

ZFS RaidZ recommendation
I have been searching this forum and just about every ZFS document i can find trying to find the answer to my questions. But i believe the answer i am looking for is not going to be documented and is probably best learned from experience. This is my first time playing around with open solaris and ZFS. I am in the midst of replacing my home based filed server. This server hosts all of my media

Find the difference between two snapshots
Hi everyone, Is there an easy way to find out which files has changed between two snapshots? Currently I''m doing a # rsync -arvn <snapshot1> <snapshot2> and it creates a list. But rsync needs to go through the whole filesystem and compare files. It would be nice if zfs would have this option builtin. Regards, Nickus

snv_110 -> snv_121 produces checksum errors on Raid-Z pool
I have a 5-500GB disk Raid-Z pool that has been producing checksum errors right after upgrading SXCE to build 121. They seem to be randomly occurring on all 5 disks, so it doesn''t look like a disk failure situation. Repeatingly running a scrub on the pools randomly repairs between 20 and a few hundred checksum errors. Since I hadn''t physically touched the machine, it seems a
