Deploying to production with backgroundrb (capistrano)
I have noticed that occasionally (about 50% of the time) when i
deploy (using capistrano) my app to a production server, i have to
ssh into the box and manually
stop and start backgroundrb to get it to load my workers.
this is my basic setup
i have 2 workers:
lib/workers/mp3_worker.rb => takes a hash of params to downsample an

automatically generate migration from db/SQL?
Hi,
I''d like to use migrations to build my initial database. Is there a gem
or plugin that will generate the migration code for initial db if I
point it at a live database or sql file?
If yes, then can you automatically generate the incremental migrations
as well?
Thanks,
Jason

Vlad the Deployer??
I''ve been playing around with Vlad the deployer, and quite like it.
However, has anyone used it to stop/start background rb processes via
the ./script/backgroundrb script?

Unable to start with Capistrano...
I''ve created a couple of tasks in my deploy.rb file for starting and
stopping backgroundrb on the remote server. The stop task runs fine
and kills the process. And the start task *seems* to run successfully,
but backgroundrb is never started on the remote host.
Has anyone had success with this? Here are my deploy tasks:

Deploying to a staging server using Capistrano: how to start up BackgrounDRb?
Hi.
I am using BackgrounDRb to process thumbnails and upload to S3 -
things are hunky-dory in development (thumbs are generated, these are
uploaded to S3, the metadata is saved to trhe DB, and I get a nice
status page updated by periodic calls via ask_status), but when I
tried to deploy to our staging server and stop/start BackgrounDRb via
Capistrano, things blew up - well, not exactly,

Need help with backgroundrb''s concepts and installation
Hello backgroundrb-devel
my name is Teeranit Ruangdet. I''m fairly new to Ruby on Rails so please bear
with me here.
I''m currently on a project where I need to import a whole bunch of records
from spreadsheet(.csv) and save them in the database. My problem is that
while I''m importing (huge file...say 5000 employees), no one else can access
the website (it basically block

timer service
hi everyone,
I have this case where I need to check some records in the database of a
specific data condition every 5 seconds and do some business logic if
this scenario is true.
Problem is there doesn''t seem to be any timer service in the rails
framework. Anyone have a general idea of how to attack this problem?
thanks,

Setting a default order for a model?
Hi,
I''m using a room model throughout my code. I keep doing the following:
@rooms = Room.find(:all, :order => ''buildings.name, room_number'',
:include => :building)
I have to copy this into several of my controllers and I feel that I''m
violating the DRY principle. Can I set this as the default order in my
model? If so, how would I do that?
Thanks,

Start script not working when run via Rake
Hi there
I''m using the latest release (r300) and ''script/backgroundrb start'' works
perfectly when executed on the server, but when put inside a Rake task, it
doesn''t launch the worker processes.
The Rake task is as follows:
task :start_backgroundrb do
run "cd #{current_path} && ./script/backgroundrb start"
end
When I run this task, the

Restarting BackgrounDRb Means Restarting Mongrel?
I''ve noticed that I can never just restart BackgrounDRb by itself. As soon
as I do that, Mongrel can no longer pass requests off to it. The only way
to get it working again is by restarting Mongrel. As annoying as that may
be, I suppose I could justify it to myself, since BackgrounDRb is
essentially resetting itself and its connections.
But what seems odd is that Mongrel (or, rather,

Caching from screen scraping
Hi all,
I need to do some screen scraping from my rails app. Given an ethernet
(MAC) adress, I scrape results from an internal web page that returns
location and hostname. How can I cache the result from that screen
scraping as to be polite to the scrapee? I would like to expire the
results daily. In perl, I would use Cache::File. Can I use rails caching
for this? What''s the best
