Exception when doing DRb remote calls from a BackgrounDRb worker
Hello,
I am trying to make DRb calls to a external server from a backgrounDRb
worker, but I''m getting always the next exception when I make the remote
call.

Connection to backgroundrb is lost when exiting action method
Hey.
I have a very annoying problem, and was wondering what is wrong.
Suppose I have backgroundrb running, and then I have an action in some
controller. In the action I define a worker. When leaving the action,
suddenly the connection to backgroundrb is lost:
DRb URI: druby://localhost:22222
Pid: 3976
Autostart...
done

A couple of problems
Hi Ezra,
Thanks for the great work on BackgrounDRb. I have come across a
couple of problems.
1. I wanted to define a simple class in the worker file to wrap up and
pass back some data to my controller. It seems that if I create the
class either inside or outside of my worker class (in the same file)
it gets wrapper by a DRb::DRbUknown object and therefore cannot be
accessed from my controller.

Access worker outside of Rails?
Hi all,
Wondering if it''s possible to access a worker from outside of Rails -- I''ve
tried simply including:
require RAILS_ROOT + ''/vendor/plugins/backgroundrb/backgroundrb.rb''
BackgrounDRb.MiddleMan.get_worker(key)
but, I get an error that the ''get_worker'' method is undefined. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot,
W

BackgrounDRb background task runner and Application Wide Context Store
Friends-
I''m happy to annouce the first alpa release of BackgrounDRb. This is
a small framework for managing long running background tasks that
allows for ajax progress bars and more. It also serves as an
Application wide cache and context store for when you need something
like sessions but shared between users and multiple backend processes
like fcgi''s or mongrels.

Stopping DRb after using BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init
Hi,
I''m having a problem where connections started through
BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init are not stopped, resulting in an
ever growing established connections between my Mongrels and remote
backgroundrbs
I added DRb.stop_service to my code executed after requests that init
MiddleManDRbObjects but that does not help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Autostarting and job keys...
I''ve now got 5 processes auto started. But I when I query the
MiddleMan for their keys (in script/console), it doesn''t find them.
Looking at the start script, it looks like it might be creating a new
MiddleMan object for each autostart
BackgrounDRb::MiddleMan.new.new_worker(:class => entry[''class''],

State of backgroundrb (dupe?)
Hi, pardon if this is a duplicate mail, I forgot to click the
subscription link the first time around.
I''ve been using backgroundrb for a while now (older version) and I''ve
had so many headaches because of it that I began looking for a
replacement technology. And then I saw the new and shiny backgroundrb
website, looking good!
Initially I used the version maintained by

Rather ominous resource consumption figures
Hello,
Yesterday I posted about how to email from a worker. I decided to be a bit
piggy and just inhale all of rails. Sorted. I am noticing some rather
ominous behavior though.
The setup: My worker takes an uploaded image as a param and passes it (via
system call) to a C++ image processing engine. Take a look at these memory
consumption figures for successive runs uploading the identical image

Question about acls
Hi,
I''m not much of a developer but I''ve been using backgroundrb for a
while now and with the release of 0.2.1 it looks like I can finally
upgrade from the old version (0.2.0 had some weird issues when jobs
just wouldn''t run, seems to have cleared up now - Thanks!).
Anyhow, while I''m doing this, I would like to tackle this problem.
Most tasks I run in

Global Data, where can it go?
I''m developing a stateful Ruby application that needs to keep data in
one location where all people accessing the site can modify its
contents. This data will be read-from/written to often, so I would
prefer for rails to keep it in memory, rather than a database.
My frist try involved global variables. After discovering that they
were being "re-initialized" with each new

BackgrounDRb Call for help
Hey there bdrb''ers!
I have been so very busy with http://engineyard.com that I have not
had time to complete the new release of backgroundrb. But I have done
substantial work towards it. It is basically an entirely new beast
with a complete rethinking of how it works. I have put up a zip file
of the new code base in the hopes that some folks will be able to
start playing with

Creating workers from workers?
Since MiddleMan is an uninitialized constant in a worker how do you
create new workers inside a worker?
Thank You,

nil object / slave server problem
I''m just getting started wtih backgroundrb, and unfortunately hit a
snag right away... I''m running the latest releases of rails,
backgroundrb, slave and daemons.
I created a simple worker class, using the generator, which currently
does nothing but print the arguments that are passed to do_work. I''m
running backgroundrb using ''./script/backgroundrb

RoR and DRb
Hi,
I have a question regarding RoR and DRb. First of all, I tested with
simple client/server examples and everything worked as expected. I have
the following lines in my environment.rb:
DRb.start_service
$rem_obj = DRbObject.new(nil, "druby://#{rname}:9001")
Since rem_obj is a global variable, I can call it from any controller
and the invoked procedure is run on the server.
However,

Load balancing
Hi,
Can somebody point me in the right direction about what approach would
be best to load-balance between two or more physical servers running
backgroundrb while using BackgrounDRb::Worker::RailsBase with mongrel?
Thanks,

Production RAILS_ENV / DB Selection
Hey all,
I''m having some issues moving a project that incorporates Backgroundrb onto
a staging server... For some reason (surely of my own doing), my RailsBase
workers are insisting on using trying to access my development DB instead of
my "production" DB.
When I try to load a model object from within a worker, I get the following:
