How can I determine a Xen server''s overall CPU utilization?
Hello, I would like to determine overall CPU utilization on a server that''s running xen, and log this information to a file - such as sar can do when run in a non-xen environment. I understand that xenmon shows utilization for each domain, but how can I massage this data to get an overall host server utilization? I''m looking for a single value that describes how much of the host

xenmon stats
Hi, Can someone clarify for me the numbers that show up in Xenmon? Specifically, I''m curious about the "domain31" entry which always shows up. It looks like this represents the free resources. Also, does anyone know what would happen if more than 30 domain0''s were started (or more likely, I did enough migrations to raise the next domain ID to above 30)? Thanks for

XenServer 5.6 FP1 - CPU utilization using sar
Hi all, Using XenServer with a RHEL6 beta VM, I have sar installed on the hypervisor and VM. If I do a ''md5sum < /dev/urandom'' to spike CPU usage on the VM, I see the indication on the XenCenter performance graph on CPU 0. It does increase quickly. Neither sar output gives any sort of indication that the CPU is being loaded. This VM is pinned to both processor 0 and 1

Performance measurement using Xenmon
Hi, I have installed Xen 3.3.1 with Ubuntu 8.04 as dom0 and fedora9 (from jailtime.org) as Dom1. I have more instances of the same fedora9 with separate config files running as other guest domains. But these guest domains dont have any program / application running. So, xm list shows that they are in blocked state as no activity is happening. I wrote a shell script that counts upto large numbers

Monitoring _real_ CPU utilization
Is there any way to monitor the _real_ CPU utilization for a given xen installation? I have a 4x dual-core AMD system running 10 domU''s, and I''m not sure if I''m overloading or under-utilizing the hardware. I''ve been using xentop to see how much virtual cpu each domU (and dom0) is consuming, but I''m finding it hard to figure out what the _real_

XenMon Patch
Attached is the second release of XenMon, which is a unique performance monitoring tool for Xen. Instead of using hypervisor calls to get domain information, we use the xentrace facility to provide fine-grained monitoring of various metrics (see README below). We have written up a small case study that demonstrates the usefulness of the tool and the metrics that it reports. This will be

xentop CPU% wrong?
Hello, I noticed that the CPU% reported by xentop appears to be too high. With dom0 idle xentop is reporting between 14-17% CPU utilization while at the same time top in dom0 is reporting 1-4% CPU utilization. I see that the TODO for xentop includes a task to make CPU% more accurate but looking at the code for xentop and libxenstat I''m not sure how to go about this. Assuming the CPU

High load average, low CPU utilization
I have a dual Xeon 5130 (four total CPUs) server running CentOS 5.7. Approximately every 17 hours, the load on this server slowly creeps up until it hits 20, then slowly goes back down. The most recent example started around 2:00am this morning. Outside of these weird times, the load never exceeds 2.0 (and in fact spends the overwhelming majority of its time at 1.0). So this morning, a few

Measuring performance using Xenmon
Hi, I am using Xenmon to measure performance of Credit and SEDF schedulers. But as you know, the metrics displayed by xenmon keep refreshing on the screen. When I tried redirecting the xenmon output, I am seeing the attached file. Is there any better way to record results which I can use to draw graphs? Please guide.. Thank you Warm Regards Ananth

CPU monitoring & CPU cycles
Hi. I am a student at University of Zurich and I''m doing a homework about Cloud Computing regarding accounting and billing. Because the "big" players use Xen Hypervisor I installed a Xen (3.3.0) on an Ubuntu 8.04 to test some things and get more familiar with Xen regarding accounting. I have two questions: 1. CPU monitoring +++++++++++++++++ I have discovered something

Is there a multi-processor version of Xentop ?
Hi, Can someone please tell me if there is a multiprocessor version of xentop available or in the making ? I notice that the current xentop does not give any information per physical cpu on a multiprocessor machine. Thanks and regards Arjun _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

xen host system capacity utilization
Hi, I'm wondering what the proper way is to determine the utilization of host resources when running a couple of VMs. I know xentop but the man-page isn't exactly helpful in explaining what the values it displays actually mean. What I'm looking for is a way to say "Ok, i have 4 VM's running and right now they utilize 40% of the cpu resources the host has, 50% of disk i/o

Bug#409355: xen-utils-common: please make width of hostname column in xentop wider
Package: xen-utils-common Version: 3.0.3-0-2 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Currently when hostnames are wider than 10 chars, the xentop output is messed up. Bug#447795: xen-utils-3.0.3-1: [CVE-2007-3919] xenmon.py / xenbaked insecure file accesss
Package: xen-utils-3.0.3-1 Version: 3.0.3-0-3 Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole Xen versions 3.x, and 3.1 contain a tool for processing Xen trace buffer information. This tool uses the static file /tmp/xenq-shm insecurely allowing a local user to truncate any local file when xenbaked or xenmon.py are invoked by root. Sample session: # setup. skx

RAID rebuild time and disk utilization....
So I'm in the process of building and testing a raid setup and it appeared to take along time to build I came across some settings for setting the min amount of time and that helped but it appears that one of the disks is struggling (100 utilization) vs the other one...I was wondering if anyone else has seen this and if so, is their a solution for it...my 2 disks are 1 Samsung F3 1tb /dev/sdb

[patch] xenmon.py: add next/previous bindings to curses mode
Cycling around many CPUs in XenMon''s curses mode can get cumbersome. This trivial patch adds bindings to move to the previous CPU. The next/previous binding seems more natural to me than the earlier cycle binding, but we can keep them all for now. # HG changeset patch # Node ID 146b5c76086c07fad61bea7ccf60f2f4fd66abbd # Parent 7dd31dbf16e75f0f70e0f9c44b2bb2b5fc6eecf1 Add next/previous

Measuring memory bandwidth utilization
I'd like to know what the cause of a particular DB server's slowdown might be. We've ruled out IOPs for the disks (~ 20%) and raw CPU load (top shows perhaps 1/2 of cores busy, but the system slows to a crawl. We're suspecting that we're simply running out of memory bandwidth but have no way to confirm this suspicion. Is there a way to test for this? Think: iostat but for
