after_update: old, new values?
With after triggers in Postgres, there are special NEW and OLD vars
accessible to trigger functions. Any such thing in Rails? Or would it
entail doing something like setting a class var in before_update?

Reading Model data before update
Hi all,
here is the challenge:
I have this validation method, that basically prevents an object which
billed = true to be updated:
def before_update
if read_attribute(:billed)
errors.add_to_base(''This service has already been billed for'')
end
!read_attribute(:billed)
end
The above code does not work in case I do something like:
object =

Delaying initialization of associations until first access
Guys,
Say I have the following:
-----
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
has_one :house
end
class House < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :person

Then I have the following code:
-----
john = Person.new
john.house.color = "Blue"
john.save

What I would like to have happen, is that on first call to john.house, if
house hadn''t been

Form validation - keepin correct fields displayed on refresh
All,
I''m finally doing my first real form in Rails - the model object that
I''m entering information for has 8 validations so far.
If I type in good values for all the fields but one, I get the pretty
validation, and the nice field highlighting, but all of the fields are
cleared, forcing me to retype all of that info. That is a big drag.
Is there a standard way to get the

ActiveRecord override
Would really appreciate it if someone could tell me why this is happening:
I override ssn method of AR class so I can encrypt/decrypt to/from the db:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
def ssn=(value)
write_attribute(:borrower_ssn, Crypto.encrypt(self.encryption_key,
value))
write_attribute(:borrower_ssn_final_four, value[5,4])
end
def ssn

How to write manage created_on and created_by via mixin?
Hi!
Definite newbie here - I''m working through this like-hate relationship with
Ruby and Rails right now... sometimes things work really well (like blobs
seem to rock) but other times, I dunno! :-)
Anyway, I''d like put in create and update user timestamps on all my primary
domain tables and allow them to be updated automatically by ActiveRecord.
Coming from Hibernate, I just

How to Disable Callbacks on a Model
Does anyone know how to disable a model''s callbacks?
I have a routine that increments a page_view counter for various model
objects in an after_filter in my ApplicationController. I call this:
increment_page_view()
Rather that checking through the trace array in each model callback for
"increment_page_view" I''d rather disable the callbacks from inside

slightly OT - Ruby division
Hey all,
In my code, it seems that when I divide two integers, the result is an
integer. Is there any way to make it such that when I divide two integers,
the result is a double?
Any help appreciated,

Issue in ActiveRecord generated reader methods
Hi all!
I have come into a strange issue in Rails that I am hoping someone
can shed some light.
To make a very long story short, I have been researching how to
override ActiveRecord::Base#read_attribute and write_attribute to
perform security checks at the model level (influenced by the
ModelSecurity generator). Shortly after implementing some code to
check this behavior, I began to

currency conversion webservice in a rails app?
Hi,
I''m interested in using a currency conversion web service in my rails
app. Does anyone have a free service that they use and like? I found
this one
http://www.webservicex.net/WS/WSDetails.aspx?CATID=2&WSID=10
I''ve tried to make a simple, plain Ruby script to connect to this and
get a conversion rate without success.
How do I integrate a webservice into my rails app? I

Using before_create and conflicting setter method...

text_field weirdness?
I''m storying amounts of money in my database as cents.
So I have custom accessors in my model, for example
def actual_amount
read_attribute("actual_amount").to_f / 100.0
end
But when I use
<%= text_field ''item'', ''actual_amount'' %>
I get, for example, "3600" instead of "36.00".
If I ignore the helper, and

find_by_sql column types
Hello--
There must be a better way to do this. I have a class method in my model
that finds averages and does a few calculations using find_by_sql. The
problem I¹m encountering is that all computed columns from MySQL come back
as type string. E.g.,
def self.find_averages(domain_id)
if @@domain_average
return @@domain_average
else

Extending model
Hi,
I''m looking for a way to extend one of my models to allow some level
of abstraction between what goes into it and how it is stored.
For example, say I have a Product and I want to set it''s price. A
person using the website will type the price in euros. Internally, I''d
like to store the price as an integer value of cents.
I can currently do this with some ugly code

Created_on and updated_on in a non-ActiveRecord model
Hi you all,
I have a model simulating an ActiveRecord model, according to the tips
stated in [1]. It is simulated because even though I am gonna save the
attributes in a file, not in a DB, I still want the validations made by
ActiveRecord::Base (see code below).
Well, the thing is that I also want the behaviour of the created_on and
updated_on columns, that get modified automatically before

find it in the archives, so my apologies if it''s already out there.
