Setting a global before_filter action in application.rb
Can you set a global before_filter action in application.rb?
So, for example, you could control authentication for all of the
controllers in an app.?
Obviously, you would need a way to reference actions by controller
within this "global before-filter".
Thanks,
Wes

"rails_shared/controllers") ]

end
and in class SiteController

Multiple Layouts - Single Controller
How do I do multiple layouts for a single controller:
I am aware I can do... render(:layout =>''mylayout'') for individual
actions, however this becomes a multiple render problem.
I tried this...
layout "mylayout", :except => [:myaction, :myotheraction]
layout "myotherlayout", :only => [:myaction, :myotheraction]

removing duplicated rows from a data.frame
Dear all,
Sorry for the simplicity of the question, but how does one go about removing duplicated rows in a data.frame?
I'm looking for a quick and simple solution, as my data.frames are relatively large (50000 by 50). I've racked my brain and searched the help files and found nothing useful or quick, only duplicated() and unique() which work only work on lists.
Thanks
Gary.

Testing misc methods in ApplicationController
I''m already successfully testing before_filters in application_controller
courtesy of this blog post:
http://www.movesonrails.com/articles/2008/01/23/spec-ing-your-application-controller
However, i can;''t work out how to test the sort of method that is added to
application_controller so that all controllers can use it. It must be
something simple that i''m doing

Model: self is not child's parent
Assume a model Parent and another model Child. Child belongs_to Parent
and Parent has_many Children. The following fails:
@
p = Parent.find(:first)
assert p.equal?(p.children[0].parent)
@
It seems odd to me that I and my child''s parent are not the same object.
In fact, this is royally screwing me up. Can anyone tell me why this is
or point me at a relevant discussion, blog posting,

How to change the menu depending on the controller/method?
Hello,
I''m still dtarting with ruby on rails. And I''m trying to have a menu
depending on the current controller/method.
Here is what I was thinking of (please tell me if there''s a better way
to do it):
I have a database with menu_groups (corresponding to controllers) and
menu_elements(corresponding to methods). Each menu_element belongs to
one menu_group.
I created a

Specify a controller action via attribute in INPUT tag?
I have a pre-existing form with one existing "SUBMIT" tag generated by
<%= submit_tag %>
I would like to add another <INPUT type="submit" ...> to my form.
How do I successfully associate that <INPUT> tag with a different
controller action than the default one specified by my <%=
start_form_tag %>?
Or does this approach even make sense?
In RoR, is

Rspec Stories / Selenium Nightmare
I have been using Rspec stories with Webrat feeling very productive and
happy.
Then I needed to do something with Selenium (Webrat could have done what
I needed but it does not yet have the functionality).
Selenium-core as part of a rails plugin looked nice but did not seem to
fit with rspec stories. So I went the Selenium-rc route.
Since Selenium uses a separate instance of rails

False Positives and Autotest on New Folders
False Positives
I just discovered how easy it was to create a false positive when I, trying
my first RSpec test, did this:
ob.should eql?(''foo'')
instead of:
ob.should eql(''foo'')
or:
ob.should == ''foo''
As far as I can see, this is roughly equivalent to:
ob.should false
Neither eql?(''foo'') nor false causes the spec
