Can''t get observe_field to take a variable for a field name
The subject pretty much says it all: I can''t?get observe_field to take a
variable for a field name
I''ve tried:
<%= observe_field(var_name, ...
<%= observe_field("#{var_name}", ...
<%= observe_field(:"#{var_name}", ...
No luck.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
: )

checkbox_tag outside a form?
Is it possible to use checkbox_tag outside a form? I''ve put it in a view and it renders but I get nothing back in the params hash. Is there a way to get the value? Like maybe with some JS onsubmit to populate the params hash myself?
Thanks,
Bill

How to deal with observe_field in partials?
Hiyas
I''m having a little problem with a observe_field in a partial
"bokings/room_list":
<%= select_tag "room_#{room.id}_grownups", options_for_select([0, 1, 2],
room.grownups.length) %>
<%= observe_field "room_#{room.id}_grownups",
:url => set_number_of_grownups_booking_room_url(:id => room.id),

check_box_tag not passing 0 when unchecked?
Code:
<%= check_box_tag("person[#{person.id}][is_approved]", 1, true) %>
Rendered output:
<input checked="checked" id="person[7][is_approved]"

Problem:
The value of "1" is always passed, even if the box is UNCHECKED.
Suggestions? Thanks!

observe_field, does this generate HTML?
I don''t have Rails installed at the moment, I''d like to check myself,
but it''s just a simple curiosity.
observe_field fits into replacement tags <%= %>, which caught my
attention because as far as I know it''s just javascript observing a
field and should not stick anything into HTML. Is <%= merely used as an
enabling method, or will there actually be

Update second pulldown menu based on first menu selection?
I know I''ve seen this somewhere on this board and just can''t search it
anymore.
I have three relational tables: clients, projects, and tasks. Currently
I''m working on customizing the ''new/edit'' task _form. So far I have it
listing clients in a pulldown menu so I can assign the new task to a
client. I''d like to have a second pulldown select

RJS, & mulitple Drop Down Boxes.
Hello Again Rails Folk!
I''m trying to creat a page similar to what the person is doing here...
http://mudabone.com/aietc/?page_id=410
Instead of doing it the way he/she has, I decided to use RJS files, or
at least I tried.
Here''s my view

<%= javascript_include_tag "prototype" %>

RJS in Internet Explorer to update a list box
Hi,
I''m trying some RJS to update a series of list boxes in which the user
selects a state, and the following list gets updated with a list of
counties, and the same for the next list of areas.
My code works perfectly (albeit a bit slow) on Firefox, but on Internet
Explorer it clears the list box (instead of filling it) and Netscape
shows all the counties cramped together on one

can use use observe_field with a 3rd party server?
Hi-
I''m trying to implement an auto-complete using Yahoo''s autocomplete
server, which basically suggests search completions:
http://ff.search.yahoo.com/gossip?output=fxjson&command={your
searchterms}''
if you want to see the results in your browser, use xml instead:
http://ff.search.yahoo.com/gossip?output=xml&command={your
searchterms}''
So, I can

Ajax and IE6 - is there some sort of "trick"?
Hi,
I''ve got some Ajax stuff that shows more or less of a complex form based
on a radio button selection. A "radio_handler" controller action is the
action for a form handler. Some seemingly simple "replace_html" fires
as a result of different radio buttons being chosen (which should then
show more or less of the form).
This all works just great on Mac Safari and

rails, I''m not sure how I should proceed...
What I want to do in simple terms is: When the my page load, get some
data from a table (let''s call that table items).. so I want to get all
my items, and display them in a div... I want to do it via Ajax because
I want the user to be able to filter this data

form helpers don't seem to work with RJS files...
I’ve been spending a great deal of time chasing this problem. Hopefully
someone sees something obvious I’m doing wrong. Basically anytime I try
to call fields_for from an RJS file or within a partial in the RJS file,
I get the following error. My goal is simply to load a partial into a
div. The fields in this partial require fields_for though. And that’s
where the problem lies.

Firebug 1.2.0b4 for FF3
The current beta version of Firebug doesn't appear to install on
Firefox 3 on CentOS 5.2, apparently because it's reporting itself as
3.0b5 rather 3.0. I tweaked the minVersion requirement in the xpi to
3.0b5 and it seems to be working fine for me now.
In case anyone else is interested in testing it, my tweaked version is

How to Firebug XHR/AJAX requests
Saw a lot of recommendations for Firebug
(http://www.joehewitt.com/software/firebug/) on this list. I''ve scanned
its docs and tried it--many useful features. But I''m so dense that I
can''t get it to spy XHR/AJAX requests and their response on FC5 running
Firefox 1.5.0.4 and Firebug 0.4.
Can someone tell me how to get to

Form.serialize(this) returning empty string in onSubmit, Ajax.Update context, works in Firebug watch
This page is ripped from a real application, but its been simplified
for debugging, turning off authentication and hiding Secret Sauce®.
So if you try
Form.serialize(''bio_form'')
in Firebug you''ll get a url-encoded string back.
The parameters to the Ajax.Updater() call a wrapper around
Form.serialize which should present an alert with the url-encoded
string. It

Newbie Ajaxy Question
Hi all,
I''ve been trying to figure this out by myself and while I feel I''ve made
some progress, I feel kind of stuck. Let me see if I can explain what I''m
trying to do. I have a very simple form with a text box and a text area.
The text in each of these will eventually make it into a row in a table in
my database. For now, the value in the text box represents a
