More flexible file column?
The file column plug-in is great, but there is a problem with it. Well,
two... But the other is well documented now. :^)
Consider a time when you''ve created a CMS for a client and it''s been in
use for over a year. Say 1500+ images have been uploaded so far. Now the
client comes back with a simple request... ''Can you change the thumbnail
size to 80/90, rather than

RailsCron 0.2 plugin
I received feedback from some of you, saying that it would be cool if
RailsCron was even easier to manage. So I implemented a graceful
start/restart inside of the plugin''s init.rb. If you don''t like it,
comment it out and send me the feedback.
Also, I finished an update to RailsCron that allows you to attach
asynchronous processing methods to your ActiveRecord models. i.e.:

How to install RailsCron?
Hi,
I would like to start running a background procedure once a user logs in
to his account on the website. For this I am considering using the
RailsCron object. However, I am not able to download it. I am new to
Rails. Can someone give me the excat command I should use to get
RailsCron?
Can someone suggest a better way of running a procedure in the
background?
Thanks

Q: Where to put a periodic updater?
Hello,
I need to put a script in place for updating a local database with a
remote resource periodically. It should be started alongside the
server (or inside it, whatever) and be run as long as the server
running my rails app is up an running.
Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?
I have thought of editing the environment.rb file and placing the call
to the script trigger there, but I wonder

Sending Scheduled Email Ticklers
Hi All,
I am developing a RoR app for managing community information and would
like to have an summary of current events and interests mailed out
monthly. The tickler email would be a basic summary of items and links
back to the site.
I would like to schedule the email delivery dates and have the app send
out email to registered users that opted for this service. Once
scheduled, a monthly

Version control for deployment?
If I can get root access, I''ll use version control for deployment as
well... It beats ftp and scp hands down for speed. Setting up a
repository on a remote server means I get automatic off-site backup as
part of the development cycle, and deployment/site update is as simple
as a three word command line entry. Small changes on remote test sites
can be made with Vim (or your *nix

running a background task/thread in rails?
Hi, I am new to ruby and to rails, but I like what I see so far. I have
been working on a web app in java (servlets and JSPs) that, based on a
request from the user, kicks off a thread in the background to perform a
task (puts messages in an MQSeries queue). The thread object is stored
in the session and I then allow the user to control the task from the
browser(like stop it).
Is the same

RailsCron 0.1 plugin
I, like many of you, have been searching for a good way to handle
running long processes in Rails. So I rolled my own solution. I
really want feedback! (I''ve tested this on very simple hello world
examples, so don''t use it on anything production yet) .
Grab the plugin:

RailsCron 0.2.2, please update
I updated RailsCron to fix some threading issues with ActiveRecord.
Please update if you were on 0.2.1. Also, I am still working on a
good unit test strategy (its tricky because I would think that the
tests must occur over a lot of time), but haven''t had/made time to
give it its due. If you have suggestions, please let me know.

model mixin module madness
If I have several models which exhibit the same functionality, it seems
makes sense to create a mixin, ''include'' it in each model and save
myself some work and repeated code.
Where can I define a module which will be available to all models? I
can''t seem to find a documented place for them.
Alternatively, is there a Rails-standard way of achieving the effect?

Task scheduler
Does anyone know if there exists a Task Scheduler module in Ruby on
Rails like in TurboGears below?
http://www.turbogears.org/preview/docs/scheduler.html
I''m using Ruby on Rails for a multiplayer online game and I want to set
checks at regular intervals to see if users are still logged in etc.
Thanks in advance

Good and Bad Experiences with Hosting Companies
I''m about to get hosting for an on-line shop application in the UK. I''m
leaning towards Bytemark, as they seem to have the right product range
and attitude. Support sound knowledgeable and helpful and they show a
marked preference for Debian, which I happen to be fond of.
Has anyone tried them? Has anyone had good or bad experiences with other

Rails and Offline processing
How are you guys handling threads or server processes that have to,
for example, process the data in your application on a periodic basis?
Cron jobs can do it and then run on the database. But, are there ways
to launch threads within the rails application itself.
I have heard of WebBrick ways, but I am working with lighttpd,
fastcgi? (textdrive if you are really interested).

Showcase On Rails CMS v0.1
I built out a simple CMS for websites that rely heavily on portfolios.
This covers graphic and web designers in particular, but also other
people with stuff to show off. It''s really easy to customize
progressively, so that some people will only modify CSS, but others
will dig deeper into Javascript behaviors and the Rails view code.
Check it out at http://showcase.kylemaxwell.com/

RailsCron 0.2 questions
Hi all, I''ve set up RailsCron to send email reminders on a daily
basis. My dev environment is Rails trunk on Debian Sarge, lighttpd
running as a regular user.
I''m having two issues:
1) When I run "rake cron_start", I get
rake aborted!

The "blank?" method is provided by Rails, so I''m

catch all error for incorrect urls etc
Hi,
I am changing a very standard old school website to rails. When I make
the change to rails, all of the old urls will not be valid. If a
person has a bookmark to an old web page I would like them to be
directed to the front page of the new website www.domain.com. How do I
do this? Do I do something in routes.rb?
Thanks,

A couple of ferret 0.9.4 exceptions
Hi Dave,
I am using ferret at my site http://gifthat.com and I just had a few
exceptions pop up. I don''t have a way to reproduce them, but my site
just was listed on lifehacker.com and these issues have popped up
under multiple concurrent users (only twice though which I think isn''t
too bad). I am using two lighttpd instances both with read/write
access to the index:

Linking to the paginated items from search results.
Using Ferret for searching, I''ve got results that I need to link to.
Which is fine, except for that they''re displayed on paginated pages
using Rails paginate function - so it''s not like I can''t get it from the
database or anything else. Anyone have any ideas on how to go about
this? It''s not so much a coding problem as a theory problem, and I
