using Linux as a NAS / SAN device
Hi,
I'm looking at using Linux as a NAS / SAN device, and would like some
input from other's who have done this before?
How would it compare to commercial SAN devices, Thecus N8800SAS
(http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=177&set_language=english)
or something similar to these?
I would probably use hardware RAID 10, and could go with either SAS /
SATA, and then

What NAS device(s) do you use? And why?
If you use any NAS (or a SAN) devices, what do you use? And I'm

We've had very good experiences with our NetGear ReadyNAS devices but
I'm in the market for something new. The NetGear's aren't the cheapest
ones around but they do what it says on the box. My only real gripe
with them is the

settings up cheap a NAS / SAN server, is it possible?
Hi all
I want to look at setting up a simple / cheap SAN / NAS server using
normal PIV motherboard, 2GB (or even more) RAM, Core 2 Duo CPU (probably
a Intel 6700 / 6750 / 6800) & some SATA HDD's (4 or 6x 320GB - 750GB).
My budget is limited, so I can't afford a pre-built NAS device.
Can this be done with CentOS? I've been looking FreeNAS (which is built
on FreeBSD), and it

how do I find out which nameserver returns a DNS query?
Hi all
If I do a "dig mydomain.co.za" from a Linux server, how do I know which
DNS nameserver returns the queries?
I seem to have a faulty DNS server, but can't see which one, so I want
to find out which nameserver (if there's 4 - ns1.myserver, ns2.myserver,
ns3.myserver & ns4.myserver) returns the queries?

Re: unable to access Linux HVM via xm console - Couldnot read tty from store: No such file or directory
HVM = fully virtualized. The question is, why are you using fully virtualized domUs? Why not paravirtualized (PV)?

I hope anyone can help me with this. I'm trying to get vmware to play
along nicely on CentOS 5.1 x64, but I get errors when I try and start a
vmx image, or list them. This the the error:

using Linux as a front-end controller for a SAN?
Hi all,
I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Has anyone tried,
or have experience with, setting up a Linux server to manage a few NAS
devices and thus make them all visible to the clients as one large
SAN?
Basically, I'm thinking it would be a good idea to combine the current
NAS's we have into one large system (typically a SAN?) and then let
the clients all connect to one

using a Laptop as a KVM console?
Hi all,
Has anyone seen something like this before:
I want to use a laptop as a KVM console. Basically when a technician
goes to one of our datacentres, or clients he has to look for a free
LCD, keyboard & mouse to connect to a server (no network access,
reinstall, troubleshoot failed kernel / HDD, etc). And then hopefully
there's an open power socker in that cabinet.
So I'm

CentOS 6 domU on Debian 6 dom0 not working
Hi all,
Has anyone managed to get CentOS 6 domU (i.e. guest) working on a Debian 6 do0?
Both OS''s are 32bit and I''m running XEN 4.0.1 with HVM support.
A CentOS 5.6 domU works fine on this very same server though.
When I start CentOS 6, I get the following error:
newusaxen:~# xm create -c /xen/genocide.cfg
Using config file "/xen/genocide.cfg".

2way authentication for SSH?
Hi,
Does anyone know of a stable / working "2way authentication" system for
SSH, and even web authentication services?
Most of the banks in South Africa have a system that, when you want to make
a payment, they send you an SMS and you need to verify the action with a
secret code which was SMS'd to you. gmail also has this.
Does anyone know of a "universal" plugin /

can I use CentOS as a antivirus / spam filter / HTTP AV gateway?
Hi all
I've been thinking about using CentOS on a Dell R200 server and turn it
into a firewall / network monitor / traffic shaper in our datacentre,
instead of using a dedicated firewall device.
One of the devices that I have been looking at, with my limited budget,
is the D-Link DFL 860 -

It provides AV, SPI, VPN, DOS, P2P, etc

setting up bare minimal CentOS VM
Hi all,
I need to setup a real bare minimum CentOS Virtual Machine, but with
normal internet / network access. i.e. I need SSH, Mutt, Links, lynx,
ping, tracert, dig, iptables, etc.
Does anyone know where (if?) I can get a list of applications which
gets installed with CentOS 6 if every option is deselected in the
installer so that I can see what I can remove which isn't really
necessary

[CORRECTED] Postfix SMTP authentication on remote relay serve
Sorry about the previous post, I see the subject had a typo. So here's
the correct one :)
Does anyone know how to configure Postfix to use SMTP authentication
on a relay host?
i.e. I have a Linux server, running PostFix on an ADSL line with a
dynamic IP. Thus I can't just send out emails from this server but
need to relay it via our ISP's SMTP server, which is very unreliable.

how to optimize CentOS XEN dom0?
Hi,
I have a problematic CentOS XEN server and hope someone could point me
in the right direction to optimize it a bit.
The server runs on a Core2Quad 9300, with 8GB RAM (max motherboard can
take, 1U chassis) on an Intel motherboard with a 1TB SATA HDD.
dom0 is set to 512MB limit with a few small XEM VM''s running:

how do I create a custom CD from an existing CD?
Hi all
This may sound funny, but I can't get onto any websites right now, so I
can't even google. I want to customize the contents of my CentOS 5.1 x64
CD, and re-create the ISO to write to CD again and install on a server.
I know it's got something todo with mkisofs, but I'm not 100% sure what
the commands should look like
Can someone please give me a sample of the whole
