Validating Foreign Key
Howdy, I''m a Rails beginner working on my first significant project with RoR. I''m trying to figure out how to validate a foreign key (you know, make sure the row actually exists.) However, validates_associated doesn''t seem to be what I want to use, nor does it work... -- BEGIN -- class City < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :schools belongs_to :state

How to display the error messages from the controller
I have a wizard which consists of two pages. To keep it simple let''s say that the first page asks the user to select a state from the drop down menu. In case the user doesn''t select any state, an error message needs to be displayed. Ideally I would like to do something like this. def new selected_value = params[:addevent][:state_id] if selected_value == "-1"

#more_like_this : strange behaviour
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I have the following Problem: I created a fairly simple sample project to try out acts_as_ferret and present the results. The test set is relatively easy: I have extracts from 6 Wikipedia-Articles about several Topics, which are copied into a model that has two fields: title and text. This works quite well, until I try to use #more_like_this,

collection_select to display 2 fields
I''m trying to get a collection_select generated Drop-down box to display two fields from a table (first name & last name); however, I am having trouble concatenating the symbols. It appears as though any code I put in the 5th argument for collection_select is processed prior to executing the collection_select method. The code executes successfully with 1 symbol in the 5th

Rspec not loading fixtures
I am taking over a code base and am trying to run the tests. I am somewhat new to RSpec so this might be a trivial problem. Basically I can tell that the fixtures are not getting loaded. All 100 tests fail with a similar error. But I don''t know why. Below is the code, with my narrative with *** before it... Can you see anything or give me a clue where to look. So far I am coming up

more_like_this
Hi, I''m using acts_as_ferret in my rails application and I''d like to use more_like_this to retrieve some ''similar'' item suggestions. I have a class ''items'' which has a status field and I need to retrieve items that only have one of the two possible statuses. Looking at the more_like_this method indicates it supports an :append_to_query

Feature: make capitalization optional in *humanize*

Accessing an instance variable by its name (as a string)

Just wondering, how do i access the variable, when all i have is its name stored as a string? So far i''ve got this code, but it looks horrible. Is there a better way? eval("@" << inst_var_name << "." << field_name <<
