Auto-Reload...
Hi,
Not sure if this was posted before....
Is there a way to tell the backgroundrb server to reload workers a la
rails in dev mode ?
It seems that I have to cycle the server everytime I change my
workers...
Also has anyone cooked up a script for monitoring the background drb
process on a nix OS ?
ie rc init for server startup and making sure the process is happy

=> recipients, :mailing => mailing },

Reloading ??
All,
So I got passed my initial hurdles with merb 0.4. And all seems to work
very nicely.
Thank you all for your help !
One thing though, why should I have to bounce the merb server when I
change
my controller or associated classes ? Am I missing something ?
I am having flash back to my java days where I now have to reflect on
what changed
and bounce the server accordingly...

UTF8 postgres args saving issue
Hi, All
I have an encountered an issue where the args field is not saved correctly
to the database. I encounter an error like this:
ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid (RuntimeError: ERROR C22021 M invalid
byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0xcb3a H This error can also happen if
the byte sequence does not match the encoding expected by the server, which

Rails session parasite...
All,
I see this item on the merb-0.0.8 release notes
Added rails session parasite mode.
I am assuming merbs can piggy back off the rails current session.
How does one achieve that ?
Thanks
Fernand

how about the global data when multiple backgroundrbs ?
Ezra,
Suppose a chatroom application, a RailsApp + 2 backgroundrbs: MiddleMan1&
MiddleMan2, running in 2 machines.
When Chater1 login, RailsApp call MiddleMan1 to get something about
Chater1 from db to memory, like his contacts or other personal settings.
When Chater2 login, RailsApp call MiddleMan2 do the same thing.
But who is reponsible for the Global Data? like a Online Chaters

Can :args only be a string?
Here''s something strange!
the_job_key = MiddleMan.new_worker(
:class => :log_view_to_sf_worker,
:args => "just a string"
)
works fine.
But
the_job_key = MiddleMan.new_worker(
:class => :log_view_to_sf_worker,
:args => {
:landing_page => @landing_page,
:driver => @driver
}
)
does not.
It is as if :args can only be a string, not a

accessing args in worker
If, in the controller, I start a worker and pass in an argument like this:
session[:job_key] = MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :foo_worker,
:args => {:emrec_id => @emrec.id})
How do I access the value in the worker? I can''t seem to figure it out ;-p
Thanks!

Multiple deployments of same application using backgroundrb
Thanks for this great app. I am having some problems configuring it in my
server. I have a single app deployed three times, one is for testing, one is
for demoing and the other one is for production.
I read that it was unnecesary and it will not work to have multiple
instances of backgroundrb for each of my deployments. I read that it was
enough to instantiate backgroundrb only once from one of

Multiple backgroundrb servers?
What are people are doing when they need to deploy a new code base? You
can''t just restart backgroundrb, because then you lose any long-running
backgroundrb processes. But then you''d conceivably have to wait several
hours for all your procs to complete before pushing out the new code base.
I was originally thinking that during code deploys, we''d start up a second

Need help in passing parameters to a background job method
<backgroundrb-devel at rubyforge.org>I am trying to send email as a background
process from within a Rails app.
The goal is that when I go to http://mysite.com/foo/bar, the background job
kicks in and sends an email out. The relevant code snippets are below.
This errors out with a wrong number of arguments passed (2 for 1) message. I
think I am making a mess of passing parameters to the

Backgroundrb-devel Digest, Vol 24, Issue 7
Hi, all. Just wondering if anyone has tried using the Paperclip file
upload plugin with Backgroundrb. My current implementation uses
attachment_fu - I save the file initially to the file system without
generating thumbs, then a bdrb process picks up that file, generates
thumbs, and saves to S3. This works fine and dandy, the only hitch is
I want to save image metadata in the same table

Patch - Multiple servers support
Hi,
This is a patch that allows you to work with multiple backgroundrb
servers from within Rails. It modifies the rails worker proxy to use
a middleman supplied in its constructor, instead of using the
MiddleMan constant. Basically a fix to make
BackgrounDRb::WorkerProxy.custom_connection usable (without patch,
you can establish a custom connection but all calls to worker objects

Caching...
Hi,
I am just starting playing with merb and was wondering if there is any
caching
strategy available. I was planning on using the action caching plugin but
I am
quiet sure what is the merb plan with dealing with plugins...
Any idea or suggestions ?
Regards,
Fernand

backgroundrb / actionmailer / sendmail
Hello,
I''m trying to send emails from a backgroundrb worker and the email doesn''t
send. I get no log messages in the sendmail log or the system log, nothing
in the backgroundrb logs at all, nothing in the production log.
Below is my code for each component
worker:
class QuizReviewerWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker
set_worker_name :quiz_review_sender
def create(args =

Can BackgrounDrb help me?
I have a big report to produce from a Rails app that takes several minutes
to put together. I hoped backgroundrb would be able to pull together all
the ActiveRecord stuff in the background then throw it back to Rails for
rendering.
It seems, however, that I can''t pass an array of ActiveRecord objects from
the worker back to Rails. Do I have that right?
Another possibility was to do
