Disable memory balloon in dom0
Is there any reason why I would not want to set dom0-min-mem to 0 or to what I set dom0_mem on my kernel line? Setting to 0 or setting to the same value as dom0_mem disables memory balloon correct? I cant seem to think of a reason why I would want memory ballooning. Also setting dom0-min-mem should that be done in xend-config.sxp or on the kernel command line? -- Nick Anderson

development machine with xen on gentoo
Hi all. We just put a relative large server in operation (for our measures ;-) ), a 4x Dual Core / Intel with 16GB Ram and a 3ware 9550SX SATA-RAID with 4 drives. Operating system for the Dom0 is an up-to-date gentoo linux. Everything runs really fine, there are 4 Domu''s running, 1x gentoo and 2x debian and 1x Windows Server 2003. DomU''s are running blazing fast in normal

A simple backup
All, I''ve got one Xen server running CentOS 5, with 3 CentOS virtual machines on it. I have what I hope is a simple question: I''d like to backup the virtual machines. I don''t care about anything but the ability to restore a couple of files and be able to be back up and running quickly. At some point I''ll have a spare server ready to migrate running Xen

Tools to take a kernel crash dump.
Hello Everyone, We have noticed that one of our servers xen Dom0 is restarting idiopathically. Atleast, we are not able to analyze the cause. I have checked the logs but couldn''t find anything relating to it. Are there any tools such as kdump (which doesn''t seem to work on xenified kernels) for catching the kernel crash snapshot. NFS between domU and dom0 causes the virtual network to freeze! Please help
Hello, I''m a new user to Xen, so please be patient with me. I just installed a dom0 on my root-server and I also got a xenU to work with routed network. I can access from both sides and I can access both machines from any other computer too. So far - so good.. (gentoo on both ends by the way) My plan was to use a mounted NFS-directory from dom0 on my domU to place /home (and later

Soft lockups with Xen4CentOS 3.18.25-18.el6.x86_64
I've been running 3.18.25-18.el6.x86_64 + our build of xen 4.4.3-9 on one host for the last couple of weeks and have gotten several soft lockups within the last 24 hours. I am posting here first in case anyone else has experienced the same issue. Here is the first instance: sched: RT throttling activated NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! Partition vs disk images
I realize this might be one of those religious topics, but is there any good rule of thumb as to how to setup storage for a Xen domU? Without really knowing any better, I''m basically going to make a disk image of the OS and the create a ''data'' partition on my raid 5 volume for each virtual machine. This is for use at home, so in reality it probably doesn''t

POD: soft lockups in dom0 kernel
Hi, when creating a bigger (> 50 GB) HVM guest with maxmem > memory we get softlockups from time to time. kernel: [ 802.084335] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 22s! [xend:31351] I tracked this down to the call of xc_domain_set_pod_target() and further p2m_pod_set_mem_target(). Unfortunately I can this check only with xen-4.2.2 as I don''t have a machine with enough memory for

CPU soft lockup XEN 4.1rc
Hello, Similar to others I have freezeups on the system, it is consistent with high IO load. If the system runs (even with multiple) XenU it does not happen. But I can consistently force the situation to occur. Running 4 dd processes dumping 20GB each on a LVM/mdadm soft RAID5 volume it consistenly crashes in a DomU. Running without XEN I do not see the problem at all - (e.g. after about 3TB of

Reproducing fragmentation and out of space error
Recently I ran into a situation where an ocfs2 (1.4) volume was reporting it was out of space when it was not. Deleting some files helped short term but the problem quickly comes back. I believe this is due to the fragmentation bug that I have seen references to in the mailing list archive. I am trying to reproduce the problem on a test system so that I can validate that upgrading to 1.6

Xen Dom0 performance reporting/monitoring
Hi All, Debian Lenny, Xen 3.2.1 Apologies if this has been covered many times before, but I''m unsure how to go about this. I want to obtain stats from my dom0, IO, cpu etc over time to see if I''m getting any load peaks or if my hardware could handle more domU''s. I''m thinking of something similar to sar which gives you 15 minute averages across the day. I

Huge amount of used inode handlers reported by sar -v (inode-sz)
Any help with this problem would be very much appreciated (even "it's not 7.3 or ext3 pointers, look somewhere else"). I've seen a similar post to ext3-users, but since that one received no reply and I'm not convinced it's a ext3 problem (it only appears on our 7.3 hosts) , I'm CCing to the valhalla list. We have the same problem on ALL our Redhat 7.3 machines

Xen and Enomaly
Hi list, Right now I''ve to find some graphic (or web!) interface to administrate our new data center infrastructure who will be running over Xen. I''ve been googling around to find something, and looks like Enomaly is a good choice. Can anybody give me some feedback about this? Or maybe recommend another front-end interface? Thanks in advance. Boris.

2.6 memory management question
Hello all. I have a centos 4.4 box (2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp) with 7gig of ram that doesn't seem to be using swap (also 7gig now). I say "seem" because I've noticed ram utilization run around 95% (with oracle and friends running) and then firing up a couple apps to use that last 5% will stop the machine dead in it's tracks. I ran across some reading[0] about

any opinions on debian vs. opensuse for Xen?
Hi Folks, I''ve been getting just a little fed up with the state of Xen on Debian Lenny - there are a couple of known bugs that lead to periodic kernel panics - but fixes haven''t made it into the Lenny distribution. I''m sort of waiting to see how things shake out with Debian Squeeze, when it becomes stable, but... I''ve been noticing that Suse (both the

hifn(4) causing system lockup
Hi all, can someone comment on the state of the hifn(4) driver? I've recently upgraded my 6.2-STABLE workstation to RELENG_7, and I'm now experiencing system lockups that seem to be caused by the hifn(4) driver. I've got a Soekris vpn1401 card to help with GELI disk en- cryption. Reading from a GELI volume is causing the system to freeze completely, which does not happen if
